  1. Since getting my Khorns two weeks ago I have been listening to all.......a lot of my music that I have not played in a while. One CD that really stands out just for sounding great is Santana's Supernatural. Granted a few songs are a little too south of the border for me but the majority of the CD is great. Especially the 8th track, "Migra". The drums beat on you throughout the song and the trumpet sounds like it's in the room with you. Play it loud!

  2. Well I would like to contribute to the music thread but feel most of my music is pretty main stream. I've been looking here for ideas for new stuff but since ZZ Top got mentioned I guess I can contribute a little.

I enjoyed Dire Straits, Communique (vinyl) recently and was reminded how much I like that album. Also, Supertramp, Crime of the Century (also vinyl).

More recent and for a laid back mood would be Norah Jones, Not Too Late. This one is high on the repeat list for me.

  3. So I finally got a pair of Khorns. 1976 models. Freshly refinished and they look really nice in the room. I have wanted a pair of these since 1990 when I discovered them while buying a pair of KG-4's. I have used Technics, Onkyo, Sony and Adcom equipment on the KG-4's and have always been impressed with the sound. While I have always noticed that some recordings sound much better than others I have never really noticed any music sounding unpleasant on the KG-4's. I can't say the same for the Khorns.

I have had some cd's sound truly incredible such as Clapton's Unplugged album. The Khorns have brought out parts of that cd which I have never really heard. Especially the tightness of the kick drum. Other music I have actually turned off because it was not pleasing to hear.

Several people on this board warned me before buying them that the Khorns were extremely revealing and that my current Adcom GFA-555 was not a good match for Khorns. I told myself surely they would sound at least as good as the KG-4's until I can decide on a replacement amp. Well, the quality recordings do sound good but anything less is somewhat disappointing.

So now I'm looking at my current options around the house. The Adcom GFA-555 is fine for the moment. I have also tried a vintage Pioneer SX-727 from the bedroom. It didn't offer anything better or worse than the Adcom so it goes back to the bedroom. I have an older Onkyo Pro Logic receiver lying dormant that used to sound really nice with the KG-4's. I may try that just for kicks.

I have two options that I am interested in that I have read about on this forum. Some recommended the QSC PLX 1202 but that leaves me looking for a preamp. I don't imagine the Adcom GFP-565 preamp would mate well with the PLX 1202......or would it?

The other option I am interested in is the Outlaw RR2150 stereo receiver. Some on this board have spoken highly of it and it seems reasonably priced. I'm sure I will list the Adcom amp, preamp and tuner on EBay or Craigslist to offset the cost.

I'm open to other suggestions for improvement. The Khorns have not been modified or upgraded. They are as they were new. I know some suggest a crossover refresh but I hesitate to do that before I get an amp/receiver that I am going to stick with. They are also placed at 24' apart corner to corner. That is four feet more than Klipsh recommends for proper staging and a third speaker in the middle is not an option.

  4. Ok so now I am questioning if I should give up on the Khorns since having a third speaker in the middle is not an option for me as it would have to sit in the middle of the doorway. Maybe instead of going corner to corner at 24ft with Khorns I should go on either side of the double sliding doors with La Scalas firing straight out. That would put them at 13ft apart and take care of the staging problem.

Will the La Scalas sound anywhere close to the Khorns?

  5. Hi Folks, I'm new to the board so excuse my questions if they have already been asked. A 20 minute search didn't find what I was after.

I am searching for a pair of Klipschorns to replace my KG4's now that my basement game room is complete. I have been driving 2 sets of KG4's with an Adcom GFA-555 rated at 200wpc. I understand that the Khorns are very efficient and don't need 200w and yes I understand that a high end tube amp is the best way to power the Khorns but that will have to wait for now. The speakers will be 24' apart in a 24'x20' basement on a concrete slab. No HT. This is a 2 ch setup for playing my vinyl collection.

Will the GFA-555, used responsibly, be a safe match for the Khorns?

Anyone have their Khorns more than 20ft apart and have a problem with staging? I am looking at about 26ft corner to corner and am wondering how much it will affect the music.

How old of a Khorn would you recommend staying away from? Do they have problems after a certain age? What should I watch out for? Or if the price is right should I not worry with age since I assume replacement parts are available?

By the way, I am in North Alabama so if you have a pair of Khorns within a couple hundred miles you would like to sell let me know.

Thanks for your replys in advance.
