  1. I owned a pair of MC1000's for a couple of years driving a pair of Mac LS360's. Big sound. Sold the amps and speakers in favor of smaller tube amps and higher efficiency speakers. But as long as your speakers can handle the power, go for it. The blue meters are beautiful to watch in the dark.
  2. It has a passive line stage for CD so I don't need any preamp.
  3. You're probably right. Nostalgia colors the memory. Seems to me now that everything looked, tasted, felt and sounded better "back in the day". I do remember really enjoying the music. So if the LSII's can bring that back, they are well worth it. Heard Richard & Linda Thompson do "Wall of Death" last night and it never sounded as good.
  4. That's a good thing. Means you're in the moment.
  5. You have a better audio memory than I. What speakers were you listening to in 1978?
  6. Indeed. That was about 30 years ago. A lot of my memory of those days is a bit hazy.
  7. My most recent speakers were Vandersteen 3A's. I always liked how they reproduce acoustic music really well. A lot of delicate airiness but with good bass. The midrange is where I felt they were weak. That's where the LSII's seem to excel especially with vocals, so it's a nice contrast. The LaScalas remind me most of a pair off Bose 901's I had years ago. I'm keeping the Vandersteens in case I ever get tired of the horns but so far I'm loving them.
  8. I guess I should add some basic info to my profile. I'm in Hawthorne, NJ.
  9. The super tweeters Sam Telig used were the Visatons from Germany. I went for the Fostex. I have the cutoff at about 14KHz so they pick up just below the LSII's leave off and go up to 35KHz. I have an attenuator after the highpass cap and coil to adjust the level. I just wanted to add a little extra sparkle and tinkle to the high end. I think it sounds pretty good. Even the wife liked it when I played the new vinyl reissue of James Taylor's Mud Slide Slim LP. We've seen him in concert several times over the years and of course he always performs "You've Got Friend". Anyway my wife said it was like having him right there in front of us.
  10. VPI HRX TT, Dynavector DRT XV-1S, Opera Consonance SACD, Quicksilver Horn Monos, LSII's, Fostex T90A Super Tweeters, Vandersteen 2Wq Subs, Oppo DV-970HD, Marantz SR5600 Surround Receiver, Runco 50" Plasma.
  11. Well thanks to all of your encouragement I am the proud new parent of twin Cherry LSII's. They are stunningly beautiful and as soon as I'm up to speed on digital photography I will send pix. Haven't had a lot of listening time yet but so far I'm impressed with the richness and fullness of the sound especially the vocals. I sprung for a pair of Quicksilver Horn Monos which seem to match up great. At 25W per, not too much or too little power. I also have a pair of Fostex T90A super tweeters to add a bit of sparkle to the top end. One question. Has anyone upgraded the feet to some kind of cone in order to couple the speakers to the floor? They come with what looks like steel furniture glides. My speakers sit on thinly carpeted concrete floor. Thanks for any suggestions.
  12. Actually they list for just under $6K per pair but I'm paying under $5K which isn't too outrageous for a Class A speaker.
