  1. Hi everyone, I've been interested in checking out a pair of jbls just to see what people like about them. I have a pair of Cornwalls, I was wondering if anyone here could let me know what model(s) would be comparable/in the same league as them

  3. Hi, I do feel like there is some weakness in my system, but to me I think it is my amp. It's a pioneer sx-34b from the early seventies. It's a tube amp and i have to toggle between phono and other input setting to get it to stop making distorted noises. For example the right channel bass will get crackly but it goes away after I mess around with the amp. And it is just a pretty loud amp in terms of hissing when nothing is playing. I don't think there is a problem with my turntable or cartridge. It's a technics sl-d1 and a Shure m97x. It's not really audiophile but it's pretty decent. This is the only pair of Cornwall (with old caps) that I've ever listened to so I dot really have much to compare them to, so I'm really sure how they should sound. The bass sound full but it sounds a little round and not as tight as I might like, but it still sounds great compared to what I had before. Is it just my pair or are your guys Cornwalls really sensitive to crackling and popping when playing records that are a little beat/scratched? I guess the tweeters on the Cornwalls go higher then my old speakers because I can hear more cracking in the really high frequency range than I used to. Anyway im sure a new set of caps would help, from what I've heard from you guys. What are they exactly? And how much do they cost? Where can I get them?
  4. I have my cornwalls hooked up to an older pioneer tube amp from the 60's. It has phono inputs on the back. I use a 1/8" to RCA adapter to play my Ipod through the auxiliary input. I love the warmth and smoothness of vinyl, but im guessing the signal from my turntable isnt as great as the signal coming from my ipod. With the amp set at the same volume level my ipod sounds much louder and more powerful than my turntable. When i try to turn my amp up to compensate for the weaker turntable signal the amp starts to distort the levels for different frequencies (highs, mids, and lows are no longer even or flat). I wish i could get my turntable to sound as powerful as my ipod sounds. I'm not really familiar with phono preamps and what their purpose is, but is that what i need to get my turntable sound as powerful as my ipod does.
  5. what would new caps do? what other sorts of upgrades are common with cornwalls?
  6. from what ive seen on the forum, i believe these are the original speakers. not too sure about the crossover thing.
  7. i havent had the chance to open them up, been busy. but do cornwalls normally come with raisers? mine have 2" risers. not really sure what the point is, since theyre pretty much listening height already.
  8. haha mom's been pretty ok with them. i think shes just happy i got a good job. I'll open them up when i get a chance n ill put up some pics. Heres the room theyre in. not the biggest of rooms. I do find myself turning them down a little. Im used to sitting on the floor (ear level for my old speakers), but now thats just a little too close. if i sit on the couch its not as bad, but theres a little less bass and i feel a little less surrounded by sound. still sounds great either way. The livingroom is also the band practice room, since our basement is a mess, now its gonna be even more packed with amps and speakers
  9. Hi, So my new cornwalls sound great, but they really make the imperfections in my amp and turntable stand out more than my last speakers did. Im looking to upgrade everything anyway. I use my dad's pioneer integrated tube amp from the 60's. the tubes are over 40 years old, so its understandable that my amp hums, hisses, and crackles pretty loudly. I found it a lot easier to do research on speakers, especially klipsch and the heritage line, than it is to find info about tube amps. I guess i have a few options: 1. buy new tubes for the pioneer amp, i'd have to find out what kind and if theyre still available. 2. buy a new one. I had a couple questions. 1. Does anyone use any "ebay" / chinese tube amps? and could you tell me how your experience has been? they look pretty nice, and ive read some good reviews. the price is a lot nicer than some of the macintosh amps ive seen on ebay. This one company "Yaqin" seems pretty legit. http://hi-end.on9mart.com/ or 2. could anyone recommend a relatively affordable tube amp/brand? either new, or one that i could find used. I was hoping to not spend more than like $500-600. 3. whats the difference between mono blocks and regular tube amps?
  10. i dont know of the speakers themselves changed over the years/generations, but this is what they look like.
  11. oh that was a pic of the glass top. im not exactly sure how they did it. The guy i bought them from said the original owner had them put in. its just a layer of felt and glass on top. Theres no klipsch sticker on the back with the serial number and stuff. but im guessing this is the serial number? One has 29W021 imprinted on the top of the back. The other has 29W022. And the guy said he had them for like 25 years, so im guessing theyre the first generation of cornwalls. is there anything else i should do to find out more about my speakers? the back is screwed in all around. is that how they normally are? i wanted to take a peak inside :] anything i should look for in particular while im there?
  12. They sound amazing. With my previous pair of speakers/subwoofer. i could hear some detail and feel the sub. but now everything so clear. and i can feel the power as a wall of sound, compared to feeling just the sub.
  13. i made a mix with all songs i like/that i think are a good test
  14. Im buying a pair of cornwalls tomorrow! the guy has them hooked up to his A/V rig, so i thought i'd bring a put together a CD mix to play when i check them out. what are some good albums or songs that are "hi-fi" or that would be good to hear the range/detail the cornwalls have to offer? so far i have muddy waters "folk singer"
  15. im still trying to convince my parents to let me get the big *** speakers.
  16. i guess, my idea was to save the extra $400 or so that i wouldnt have to spend if i got the heresys vs the cornwalls, since i already have a sub. rather than buy a sub and the heresy, which in that case id rather get the cornwalls. i just dont know if the promedia would make the heresys sound better or worse.
  17. so i decided against getting the cornwalls cause i feel like theyd take over my living room, which i do share with my family since i dont have my own place. plus my parents were pissed when they heard i was gonna shell out $600-700 for the cornwalls. which leads me too the heresys, which are about the same size as my current speakers. my sound system is a lil ghetto in that i have my promedia 2.1 sub plugged into my pioneer tube amps headphone jack (not really sure how else subwoofers connect to amps). i just dont connect any speakers to it. and then i have the regular 3way speakers connected to the outputs in the back. do you think the promedia sub would sound good with the heresy? im not really familiar with how crossovers work. everyone says heresys lack bass and they talk about what subs to match them up with, but no one ever talks about the promedia. probably cause its a computer speaker.
  18. im gonna wait for a better deal. the guy lives like an hour away. he doesnt have a sound system there that i can try out. so id have to take apart my sound system and bring it there n set it up etc. and i dont know if theyll fit in my car. and he doesnt want to bring them to my house unless im definitely buying them. plus my parents dont support me shelling out $500-700 on speakers when i already have a decent pair. sigh[:$]
  19. ok thanks. ill try to bargain the hell out of him :] the heresys are no longer for sale. but i was thinking id rather not do the whole get the heresys and end up upgrading to the cornwalls thing. theres a completed auction on ebay for a pair of cornwalls that went for $700+$300 shipping. but those are vertical cornwalls. whats the big difference?
  20. i mean. i can afford both, but if the price is too high for what it is, i wouldnt mind waiting. but if that price is right, $700, i'd get it. oh i emailed the seller of the heresy's and they must have sold the speakers cause the ad isnt on craigslist any more. so its either the cornwalls, or the cornwalls or no cornwalls.
