  1. I went to the source (Mark) and asked him the same question regarding my Peach and VRD stereo (I am using a SVS PB12/Plus-2 sub). The answer is YES. Take a quality "Y" splitter from the pre-amp and make a run to the amp and to the sub. MY sub sums the signal internally when both L&R are connected. I was concerned about ehhh, voltage, current, output or whatever from the Peach. Mark told me that the preamp could be split many ways without worry.

    Thanks!!
  2. Unfortunately, reliable NOS/vintage tubes are hard to find, outrageously expensive, and reliability becomes an issue. The new tubes made by Sovtec, Genelex and JJ are very good. Certainly alot better than when they first started out a few years ago. I've tried NOS/vintage tubes over the last couple years, and after Craig spending all that time rebuilding the amp, and me getting frustrated with "noisy" vintage tubes, I decided to try "new" tubes. It works, at least for me.

My Blueberry came with JJ's and I thought it sounded really good until I replaced them with Bugle Boys. I'll nevver put JJ's in any of my gear again. Sources are available that are not hard to find, are reliable and do not cost an arm and a leg.I've pointed loads of people on this forum in the right direction. Dealing on Ebay or any online dealers is not the place to get vintage tubes.
  3. I have a Blueberry that runs into VRD's. Can I connect y-splitters on the Blueberry main outs and run 1 signal to the VRD's and the other to my Klipsch Sub 10 Low /level Connection? I cannot connect via High Level Connections so that is not an option. Advice most welcome!

  4. I can get a used Gyro or Scout for roughly the same price. I've heard the Scout and like it very much, I know that should cement the answer. But come on, we all know aesthetics and presentation play a part in this hobby of ours. That being said, I think the Gyrodec is a stunning deck to look at, If the sound was anywhere near comparable to the Scout I think I'd probably go for it. So lets hear some comparisons, all things being equal, how does the Gyro stack up?

I own a Scout and love it but from a objective assessment the Gyro gets KILLER ratings at audioreview.com which is a website whose opinions I value...hope this helps

  5. Further, even the reviewers find only incremental improvement in those costing much, much more. Fact is, this TT is just about the perfect crossover in simplicity, build quality, and fine engineering.

couldn't be said better! what cart do you use?
  6. just an idea

    http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Sima-Multi-zone-Volume-Control-Speaker-Selector/3382757/product.html

you can connect 2 amps, 4 sets of speakers and the unit provides impedance protection so if you upgrade and had 4 sets of speakers and wanted to use them all at once the Sima protects your amp such that even when running 4 pairs of speakers, your amp works as if it has 1 pair connected at 8 ohms...

  7. I DISAGREE. I think vintage tubes are meant to be HEARD (especially in GOOD gear), and if a fellow has a couple thousand in the stash - and especially those long lasting tubes like Telefunken 12AX7, why NOT use them?

I agree with you Audio Nectar. With preamp tubes lasting up to 10,000 hours I can't believe I couldn't scrounge a pair or 2 to use especially if I had tens of thousands. I've done blind A/B tests more times than I can remember and NOS won 9 times out of 10. As it is your 1st tube integrated he may not have wanted to sell you something better until you find out if you truly like the amp. Why buy the best and decide a week later you don't like integrateds?
  8. I've owned a Scout, and currently a TD-124. To me, there's no contest. The Thorens is much better in my system.

I had a Thorens 165 with a Origin arm which I liked but prefer the Scout. How do the 124's compare to the 165's? What cart do you use with your 124? Great looking table!
  9. Right now I am trying to decide what direction to go in regards to the look of the cabinets and grill. One idea is to mimic the newer Klipsch speakers with a gloss black paint job or black ash veneer and update the grill cloth with what the newer speakers use.

I've ordered some of the below grill cloth to go with a pair of Cornwalls I had a professional paint. They have a piano gloss finish so deep and glossy you'd swear you were looking into a mirror. Just throwing out a idea. This is old Vox guitar amp grill cloth.

  10. I was using some older Infinity Reference series. I didn't notice it before, but I think I was just missing out ... After a good about 5 hours of listening to various records this evening, I've decided the highs are just fine! I think I just wasn't use to such clear, uninhibited sound.

Sure, the highs are harsh now and then, but I think that's more of an indication of poorly recorded music. Many of my records with a good quality recording just sound beautiful. I think the old audiophile catch 22 is completely true. The better components you have, the more you notice the short-comings of some recordings. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Sure, it stinks when you just want to hear a song, but it's a poor recording. The flip side is that a well made record just sings with this setup.

Considering I grabbed Jolida for $200 and the Fortes for $350, I feel like I stole the whole setup. I could have plunked down $3k at my local hi-fi shop and I wouldn't be this happy.

    I agree with you 100%
  11. VPI Scout!! I've had a Thorens 165 and still own a Garrard 301 and the VPI kills them both!!

Garten, I would love to here my choice side by side with your Scout as I was considering the Scout Master but ended up with what I'm extremely pleased with hereWink

Considering your TT cost over double my Scout I would hope that it sounds better...My friend sells VPI's hears the Scout and Scout Master everyday... could afford to own either one and he owns a Scout...
  12. Thank you all for the advice.

I ended up picking up the Fortes for a mere $350! They're in perfect shape and I couldn't be happier.

My only question is this: The highs seem a bit hot or harsh. I've played with placement and got the speakers in the corners just right for the perfect balance of bass. I'm just wondering if there are any tricks to smooth out the highs a little bit. Anyone know of any tricks?

That's a really picky issue. Don't get me wrong. This setup is killer!! I love the warmth of the tubes pushing through these big Fortes. I also love that I only have a turntable hooked up. No iPod BS or anything like that. Just the crackle of vinyl filling up the room.

    Thanks again!

Did you have the treble issue with the Jolida with other speakers before the Fortes? Do both speakers have the same problem? Do you have another amp you could hook to the Fortes to see if it's the Jolida? What tubes are in the Jolida and how old are they?
