  1. John, thanks for the feedback. About two years ago I had a guy re-wire the AK-2's to remove the oxidized monster wire and re-configure the network for bi-wiring. Every since that time I have felt there was a slight but noticeable reduction in the "slam" or "punch" in the region where drum wacks ocurr. They just don't snap hard like before. So I have convinced myself that he must have done something incorrect. I thought that this would be the opportune time to upgrade to the AK-3 or ALk. By the way, in your opinion which of these would be best for 88 Khorns using tube amplification? thanks Howard
  2. Looking for comments on replacing the AK-2's in my 88 Khorns. I've heard say that the Ak-2's were not the best network ever put in the Khorn. Is this true? For around $100 I can upgrade the 2 to the AK-3 without changing any drivers. Or, I can try ALK Engineering's replacement for around $500. Anyone ever compared the AK-3 to the ALK? Al, in your view how much better is the ALK over the AK-3? Thoughts on the best route to go? The cost differntial is not a concern. I want the best network I can get. Hope someday to add a good SET like the Art Audio PX-25. Sounds fantastic on Khorns. 88 Khorns (The Greatest Speaker Ever Made) Sony SCD777-ES Audio Research LS3 (solid state) VTL 100 Monoblocks run in "triode" mode for 60watts/channel JPS Lab SuperConductor+ DH Labs Silver Sonic speaker wire Custom Power Cord Company Power Block Room is 17.5 x 26 x 9
  3. Gentlemen, I'm thinking about getting Al's Khorn replacement network for my 1988 AK-2 Khorns. Just how good are Al's replacements and what improvements should I hear? My Rig: 1988 Khorn AK-2 Sony SCD-777ES SACD Audio Research LS3 preamp VTL 125 mononblocks run in "Triode" for 55 watts, EL34's JPS Labs SuperConductor+ Interconnects DH Labs T-14 speaker wire Custom Power Cord Power Block and Eleven Power Cords (very good and very reasonably priced)
  4. Thanks for the feedback. You guys lost me on the 'path length' stuff. I have a friend that's an EE perhaps he can explain further. My tech used a small handheld meter that had a green and red light. He played a repeated test signal and held the meter next to each driver. I don't remember the exact sequence of flashes for the test lights but for example the tweeter signal produced a red red green flash while the mid and woofer had a different sequence something like green red green (you get the idea). This is how he tested the polarity. I wonder if anyone at Klipsch can tell me the factory spec for the polarity of the AK-2 and the drivers for the 87 horns? Moderators, can you help me with this? I just want to know that it's correct. I want to make sure that when the mod was done to bi-wire enable the network something didn't get screwed up. Also, thanks for the diagram. Does it show how the AK-2 should be set for bi-wire? One set of my speaker wire goes directly to woofer network. The other set goes directly to terminals on the mid/tweeter network. The is no "jumper" between the two networks. Thanks!
  5. I recently had my room analzyed for bass response and in the process we measured the polarity of the drivers. According to my Tech, on my 1987 Khorns the Tweeter polarity is inverted to the midrange and woofer. (Same in both speakers). The tweeters are 'polarity' and the midranges and woofers are 'inverted polarity'. Anyone know if this is normal spec for this model? The 87's use the Type AK2 network K77-M Tweeter K55-M Midrange K33-M Woofer Also, thought that I might switch both sets of speaker leads (I'm biwiring) to put the Tweeter in inverted polarity and the midrange & woofer in polarity. Wonder if there would be a difference in sound? I'm little concerned because I had the networks re-wired with clean wire several years ago. At the time the networks were modified to enable biwire also. Just want to make sure a mistake was not made to the normal spec. Thanks
  6. Anyone have personal experience with using one of the Atma-Sphere or Tenor OTL's with Khorns. Thinking about arranging an in-house trial of the Atma-Sphere M-60 MKII monoblocks. Are OTL's a great match for Khorns? Thoughts?
  7. Follow up on the "Ultimate" mono blocks: My current rig consists of: Sony SCD-777ES SACD Audio Research LS3 preamp VTL 125 mono blocks EL34's run in the "triode" mode 1987 KHorns (internal wire replaced in 2001) JPS Labs Superconductor+ interconnects DH Labs Silver Sonic T14 speaker cable The VTL's are very good. Their strenghts include awesome pace and rhythm (swing), convincing bass, and excellent dynamics. But they are not as convincing as a SET. They don't provide that 'in-the-room' feeling you can get when listening to a good SET. The only SET I have tried was an Art Audio PX-25. Very wonderful except that it seemed to slow things down just a bit too much. Decided I couldn't live with the reduction in swing. It just didn't produce the toe-tapping swing that I get with the VTL's.
  8. Searching for the ultimate monoblocks to use with my 1987 KHorns. Anyone have a recommendation? How about the Cary 805c's? If you have heard KHorns with these SET monoblocks please give me your comments.
