Check out the viewsonic pro8200. I have it in my living room driving an approximately 120" screen and it does it very well for an $800 projector.

I have a '62 without reverb and is 1x12. The thing is pure magic. Someone has to jump on this!

I have a couple of K77 tweeters from my lascalas that I'd be willing to part with. PM me an offer if interested.

Sounds like you are thinking about what is commonly referred to as a "CornScala". If you search the forum, you'll find lots of information on them. I built a pair several years ago, and I'm ecstatic with them. Also see this link: http://www.critesspeakers.com/cornscala.html
The key dimensions are:
6.59 cu. ft. internal volume
50 sq. in. port
9 in. port shelf

Yeah, even with the limited time I have comparing, I would recommend it. I need to spend more time tweaking the length and sealing the top chamber to get the most out of the mod.
It should be noted that I went with the plywood port just because I had some laying around. PVC seems like it would be super simple and clean.

Why does it look like the tweeter peed on the mid-horn? I assume it works?
Ya know - I was wondering the same thing. It works just fine. Are these fluid filled at all? If not, I'm guessing something got spilled on top and happened to go in the front where the tweeter mounts.

Yeah, that's half the fun is trying things out. I'll probably break out the saw to shorten the ports eventually.
My (limited) understanding of ports was that it was just the area. I haven't seen a detailed scientific analysis of the port size for this type of mod - but I'm sure it exists. Anybody have a link?
-
Bruce,
I used the same area as 4 inch diameter ports. I went with 10" deep because I saw people using in the range of 7-10", with the thought that I can always cut it down if I need/want.

Hehe, aren't they awesome looking?
They are residing in my basement/workshop right now, so probably nothing as far as restoration right away.

Ported back cover. The glue is drying now. I can't wait to try these bad boys out and see what a difference it makes!
Update: I installed the ported covers.
No graphs, but a marked improvement in bass - highly recommended mod, especially when it's as easy as it is with my speakers.

Thanks, guys! I picked them up yesterday. They aren't in as bad condition as I thought based on the pics from the seller. Someone took standard LaScalas and turned them into gigging PA speakers. They covered them in carpet and put corner guards on. I have posted some pics in this thread: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/170092.aspx

I just got a new to me pair of La Scalas yesterday. Of course, I couldn't wait to start messing with them. I'm not sure what year they are, as the previous owner covered them in carpeting, which ruined the ID sticker on the back. They have removable tops, and the doghouse access is in the HF area. I plan on closing in the HF area with a ported panel to help with the bass - see pics.

They will be for the basement. I have a pair of CornScalas I built that are in the living room. Ultimately, the exterior condition isn't terribly important to me. So, let me rephrase my original question:
Is $500 a good value for a pair of any type of La Scalas that are rough exterior but function fine?
-
Interesting. Was carpeted ever an option? If not, someone must have done it themselves. Thanks for the info - it is a bit of a drive to check these out so I wanted to see if it was worth it before making the trip.
-
I have a lead on some late 70s, early 80s La Scala Industrials. The pictures show pretty bad shape on the outside, but the seller says they function perfectly. Seller is asking $500. What do these usually go for? I'm fairly familiar with value of La Scala, but didn't know how Industrial effects value.
Thanks,
Matt

Thanks guys. I think after digesting all of the great info posted, I think I will stick to the tried-and-true 24x24x24 internal dimension for the bass bin - it's not too different from what I had and bunches of people have had success with it. Why mess with a good thing, right? The port shelf I have seen for that configuration is 9" from the back of the motorboard with 50 sq. in. of port space. Does that sound right?

I downloaded WinISD pro (had to use wine - I'm a Linux guy ;-) ) and interestingly it doesn't mention speaker depth at all. I would appreciate it if someone could explain the relationship. I would like to, if at all possible, keep the dimensions I have roughly the same and adjust the port dimensions to fit.

There's a direct relationship to the vent size (exit area, lenth of the shelf, and distance from the end of the shelf to the rear wall) and the cab volume.
If you deviate from standard volumes...then you will need to re-compute these variables....otherwise....the tuned frequency of the vent will change and it won't reinforce the lower end of the woofers performance range.
Thanks, speakerfritz,
Do you happen to know of any good, free, calculators out there? I would like to keep the dimensions approx. as they are, and hopefully the ports can be adjusted to match.

My recs would be to definately keep the width as you have it and do whatever you want with the other dimensions.
My Cornscala bass bin was.....
interenal H x W x D 21.5 x 23.75 x 22.375 = 11425.23438 cubic inches
11425.23438 - 10641.51650144 = 783.71787856 cubic inches.
So it was 11425 cu in before my bracing. Bracing displacement volume was 784 cu in. The end volume was similar to what you have now with no bracing. The cabinet was very rigid and sounded great.
Are you considering other woofers besides a Crites or K33??
jc
I have not acquired the woofers I am going to use yet. My thought at the moment is the crites cast frame woofer, but I am certainly open to suggestions, especially where money might be saved ;-)

I've noticed that the specifications for woofer internal volume can be very wide. Like at the Eminence website. Im using the Kappa Pro 15a 8 ohm woofers and my volume is approx 6 cu ft and it sounds real good. But according to Eminence anything from 1.9 to 6.5 is good. I thought that was interesting.
Very interesting. I found the "Download PDF Cabinet Design" link to be of particular interest. The graphs for each of the 3 box sizes show somewhat different characteristics.
