  1. Well after opening the throat on the mid things sounded MUCH better...I am just shooting from the hip here, Must wire backwards... These look like they belong in a dr suess movie! They surely show the dispersion effect of horns...but there is a spike in the 1-3K range...again, no analyzer here, just ear. But in comparison to the virgin AR, the sound jumps out past the speaker. Im not sure how much farther Im gonna take this
  2. No, I attached a "lid" over each driver, then made a hole in the center at which point I used a short tube to get from the hole to funnel. I was assuming the ratio was driver size relative to throat opening....where a 1 inch driver and 1/2 throat opening would yeild a 2 to 1 ratio. I really dont know what Im talking about so feel free to correct or give me hints. Im using this cheap test just see see how much science has to do with it I have a nice sounding pair of AR bookshelf speakers that are the test mice.... 5 1/4 and a 1 inch tweet....Im leaving one virgin, so I can compare progress. Today I opened the mid throat from 1/2" (it was just easy to start there) to 1 3/4. 2 inch would have been preferred, but Im using parts at hand. Right now Im waiting for pvc to dry....and Im pretty high! I will also run no xover to start and then fiddle with caps and coils Should I plug the boxes port? Or does that not really matter? Im gonna cross these over around 500.
  3. ...first attempt horrible sounding[*-)] Required MASSIVE amounts of power to get to a listening level. Tweeter was better than the mid Sounded much better wired backwards. Next step is to eliminate the stock crossover. Im not done yet...
  4. Is there a "common" loading ratio? driver diameter vs horn "entrance" with material I have right now Im looking at 2.1 to 1 on the mid and 1.3 to 1 on the tweeter
  5. Im gonna do it...or git r done...Id say Heres my other dilema...loading ratio.... Ill start high and trim off as I go
  6. What pros or cons are there in the use of a basic funnel as a horn? I know there is science behind horn loaded drivers...but it had to start somewhere.
  7. Thanks Tom...this is what I needed... So a resistor...any particular value? Are we somewhat mimicking a speaker load? So say an 8 ohm maybe? Wire it like a speaker, place the voltmeter in line with the positive? Or doesnt really matter... Run test tones and watch for the 29 percent voltage drop... any thing I got wrong? Thanks
  8. BOSE...thats funny, Ive actually had some 901s...3 pair....anyway What I have going is this... A pair of JBL J350 cabs with just a nice 12 inch in each one, this runs from a second amp. I have a small set of "boxes" (paradigm, actually) That fit perfectly on top of the J350s and blend in like they belong there. I want to put the Mid tweet horns in these boxes and most likely run a small...maybe 2, woofers...maybe 5 1/4s...this setup will only run about 80-100hz & up, leaving the lowest to my subs... Other idea was to run the 12s up to match the mids....lending the need for eliminating the woofer...
  9. I have a box of old crossover parts, the caps are easy as most are marked...but the coils all mean nothing to me without a value? Thanks
  10. So, I went garage saleing as I always do on the weekends...heres what I saw. 2 pioneer turds...each with a 8 inch "full range" woofersesque speaker and one of those tweeters that look like a transistor radio speaker...complete with "see through" grilles. These 2 jewels were priced at 35 dollars. Below them were a MINT set of "some sort of Klipsch speakers" I didnt know what they were, but I knew they were old school. They were marked... 30 dollars Ill give you all a moment to catch your breath... So I asked him about them, casually ...trying not to show much interest. He said he hasnt used them in a while, but "THE WOOD HAS TO BE WORTH 30 BUCKS" I offered 20, he said "well how about 22.50?" I paused just a second to reach in my pocket and he says "OK, if your gonna twist my arm" So he helps me load them up and I had no idea what I even bought, or if they worked. I was surprised to find everything inside as nice as they looked and hooked them up. They sounded great! They are Heresy E, and I think Im hooked now, not to mention they seem to be worth a bit on ebay. Anyway, Im new here and thanks for listening.
  11. Thanks in advance... I have a set of Heresy from 1975 or so...they have type E balancing networks in them. What Id like to do is this... Use just the midrange and the tweeters and eliminate the 12 in woofer. 1) Can I substitute a resistor for the woofer to keep the setup stable? ...or would I be better off substituting a small woofer? Im trying to downsize the package a bit, yet retain the clarity of the mid/tweet section of this speaker. 2) What are the crossover points for this network? Thanks again!
