This is what I've experienced with multi-channel surround sound audio listening using the Marantz 8002 with the RF-82 Home Theatre System Components with a HKTS sub. The scoring system im using is not for liking, but rather its merely to give an example of the intensity or impression of the setting. PLII Music: This is very delicious... If you like tight, flatter, cleaner bass and heavier more prevalent audio, this setting is great. Bass: 3 out of 5 (bass is not very heavy but has a stiff attack, rather light flat and tight) Vocals: 5 out of 5 (very prevalent and clear, front and rear heavy, but not over bearing...) Treble: 5 out of 5 (clear and shinny, bright but not intense... its perfect imo.) In my opinion of this setting, it is better for hip hop or alternative type music... little bass and stronger midrange. (not very good for heavy D-bass which is very low frequency boomy-intense bass) This surround sound setting will not bring out the quality of the bass in the music but it is very good for pop country, disco, and various types of house/dance/trance music. Neo:6 Music: This is a personal favorite of mine. Deeper intense bass and heavy surround speaker activity... However, with the great bass, the vocals tend to suffer. (see below) Bass: 5 out of 5 (Very deep, clean but slightly more muddy and boomy with a softer attack) Vocals: 3 out of 5 (Vocal level is noticeably lower and more rear heavy so the surround speaker levels seem a much louder. For me its better to sit slightly closer to the front speakers to get a good balance.) Treble: 4 out of 5 (clear but not as present, not intense but it is distinct) If you like boomy bass music such as rap and heavy alternative filled with low bass frequencies, its great setting. However if you are very lyrically sensitive and like to hear the vocals at a stronger level, this might not be a very comfortable setting. Drum and Bass is really good for NEO:6 music. CSII Music: This setting is like a merger of Neo:6 and PLII. Bass: 4 out of 5 (Not very heavy as Neo:6 rather not as muddy, but is more flatter instead, and very crisp and tight... its perfect imo) Vocals: 4 out of 5 (Front and rear heavy, you dont really have to struggle to hear it and theres a perfect balance... not at all over bearing. However... in my opinion, the vocals sound better in this setting than they sound in PLII because in this setting the Vocals mix better with the Bass and Treble) Treble: 4 out of 5 (clear, present, and shiny, but not as bright as PLII... rather a bit more subtle) I've noticed that this setting is great for what ever i listened too, but particularly great for R&B. However, depending on the music, PLII and Neo:6 were a better match for certain songs. Neural-THX is for multi-channel audio and I don't have very much of that, so I dont use this setting. M-CH Music: This is the multi-channel music setting specifically for 2CH stereo music. It is very energetic (wavy ambiance) in my opinion. Bass: 5 out of 5 (Very front heavy... light in the rear, also very deep, louder (more intense), and muddy) Vocals: 5 out of 5 (Not very intense in the front, but definitely prevalent. Very echoey and mesmerizing in the rear) Treble: 5 out of 5 (Vey shiny and bright, will tweet your ears and make you open your mouth wide to rebalance your equilibrium) This setting is very good for R&B, Dance, Trance, and Instrumental type music... the very mood of this setting is lights out with blacklights blazing. It is very enthralling and riveting. M-CH Movie: Now I know this setting isn't for music, but it works very well with 2CH music and is designed for 2CH movies. It's almost identical to M-CH Music with only 2 minor differences. Bass: 5 out of 5 (Front AND rear bass heavy... This setting will make your surrounds kick and have bass.) The other small difference is it doesnt have the echo effect of M-CH Music. The audio is without effects. I really like this setting and it is probably my most listened to surround setting of them all because the audio is loud, bassy, and clear at the same time all around you. Thats my little personal surround sound heaven.

here is the issue... when i upgrade from my lil temporary 200 watt HKTS sub, i hope to get more boom. but what im lacking is the puchiness from the RF-82's... im used to having 15's that just shake your T-shirt with punch power. im old school but im trying to accomplish old school and save space at the same time. im sure it can be done. the way i have it set up now, my 82's get loud, but they dont really have the punch i desire. i need to be able to feed them more juice and push them harder to get the power and umph! in your face!! that i need... thats why i either wanted to get a seperate amp to push the 83's (250 watts going in them) or try to run 4 fronts as i was wanting to do earlier, so i resorted back to what people were recommending which was seperates in the first place. so thats why i decided to maybe try a different set up than i have now to just test the waters and see what kind of sound i get. money isnt an issue, im just dabbling around to find what i desire out of all of this. i got a good idea of what I want to do now, most of the posts here have been very helpful. if i dont get what i need from the amp in the marantz using the 83's, im almost certain that the emotiva xpa-2 pushing 250 into each rf-83 wont dissappoint me. as someone once said, the rf-82's and the rf-83's arnt in the same league. the sound coming from my speakers need to make me feel the way this baby looks

oh and far as money goes, i dont look at price to make decisions most of the time unless its pointless to spend more when i dont have to. but if i see something i reaaaaallly like, the price wont deter me from buying it unless im being taken advantage of

so if i dont feel the power I desire from the Marantz with the RF-83's and the RC-64 running off of the built in amp, I see one of my options as upgrading to to the XPA-3 or 5 and having that push my 83's and center channel... what im desiring is thump in my chest, if the marantz can do that combined with the rw12d, i might stick with what i have... otherwise ill have to keep seeking until i find a resolution. I was really thinking that here in 2009 that there would be a really quite like tight preamp (really hi-tec and savy with all the bells and wistles offered) on the market in case I ever did want more out of a pre-amp than the Marantz 8002 could offer. Maybe there are, i just dont know of any. Not that its a necessary option for everyone, but in the new age, I like to go big... at first I thought buying a 2000 dollar receiver was going big, but as I play with it and get into it, like I said earlier, the upgrade bug has me wanting more out of it. But first things first, get the RF-83's in July, then see how they sound. I think that is first thing I need to do like William said.

Im in surround sound heaven. I was intending to get the RSX-5s as rears, but these RS-52's are argasmic to my ears. Is it not possible to just run 4 RS-52's for surrounds and surrounds backs for the time being instead of the RSX-5s in the back?

I said if once you get the Marantz hooked up to your RF-83's, take an objective listen and then decide if it is lacking. When I felt like my Onkyo really did not have enough oomp to run my whole setup, I bought a used B&K 200w 3-channel amp and the difference was astonishing. The Onkyo had enough juice for most 2 channel applications with my RF-63's, but it lacked noticeably with all channels running. My Onkyo works great as a preamp and running my surrounds. I firmly believe your Marantz with it's better power supply and preamp section would run circles around my Onkyo. Bill b4 i buy a pre amp... or the emotiva, ill do what your asking, thats a good idea. but if my t-shirt doesnt vibrate from the punch, the emotiva is definately an option to push more juice into them to make em kick harder. its 250 watts per channel. what are you using to run your center channel if you have one? is that where that 3rd channel is going? and what is running your sub?

no its not, im just very confused and desperite to fulfill this deep desire to rock my box and make my t-shirt vibrate... i never heard of marantz b4 joining the klipsch forum, apparently im listening :-\all my life ive been a receiver man, i wanted to give it one last shot before i tossed the idea out the window and migrate to seperates like what was suggested so many times. i may not have did exactly as suggested, but those suggestions were definately heard and are now being excersized... your help is appreciated, i dont know why you would think otherwise

yea i re-read it.. what did you need me to focus on, cause i still think i need more power to make the RF-83's really punch and vibrate my T-shirt when they come in? I'll give them a listen, but i need a contingency plan.

MistaChy, Your system profile says RF-83's(coming soon). Have you actually received your RF-83's and hooked them up to your Marantz yet? If not, wait. The "synergy" between the Marantz and the 83's may be great. It is your hard earned $$$ to spend but I would wait and listen first. If then you feel it is lacking, add a 3, 5, or 7 channel amp for some boost. I believe the 8002 would make a great preamp for maybe another Marantz amp or any other quality amp. Bill thats probably a good idea, but what you are suggesting is that i run the front speakers off of an external amp?

im trying to find the support site so i can take a look at specs and product manual. what is the home site for this product. i keep getting "reviews" to come up when i google it

The Marantz is okay, but I crave more power, so I'm wanting to go the seperates route which was at first recommended my many of you fine gentlemen. You live and you learn right, sometimes the hard way. [] So far I've heard, with a XPA-5 combined with a XPA-2, you get 7 channel setup... If thats true, then all I need to decide on is a Pre-Amp hopefully... but I dont know if I'll need an additional XPA-2 to power the subs. I'm not sure how that works for the .1 and .2... I need lots of channels (more than 7) and have to ability to run 2 subs because eveunually I will be wanting a 7.2 setup. I'm looking for a pre amp that can provide many bells and whistles, sirius being one of them, also a really good supply of surround settings. Wifi access to communicate with windows vista is a plus. I will be pushing the RF-83's and the RC-64... and will eventually upgrad my side surrounds and surrounds backs as well to the RS-62 and RB-61... I have officially contracted the upgrade bug...

ive heard the term overkill mentioned once or twice in the past []i just figured since i wasnt getting anywhere near maximum output of the rc62... maybe getting the rc64 probably was a waste. but whats this i hear about synergy? im basic.... some one please explain. and when you say depth... do you mean warmth bassyness in the vocals?
