  1. I'm using KEF 2way in walls w/8" woofer To answer the other question: They sound great with the Klipsch as a surround system but are adjusted 7-1/2db on side channels below the KHorns to get the same levels.
  2. Al, I was actually using the 4.5mh and 35uf that was in lower cabinet completly bypassing the 2.4mh choke. The taps with that setup using K55M are 7.9db attenuation. It actually sounds great but when I hooked up the 2.4mh bypassing internal bass network my taps are now 11.3 attenuation which is slightly hotter than before. I think I will try 8.8 ohms by adding a 75 ohm 3watt for 12.1db. What do you think? Have you talked Klipsch into testing xovers in the a. chamber John
  3. Al, Are you saying the bass l & c effects overall impedance of your network and changes the xover points?
  4. Contrary to popular belief I rebuilt my MC240 with all new parts except the transformers. Hand matched all resistors to less than .1% Like Al's crossover design I mixed up the capacitors with Solen, hovland, sprague. New, faster higher current diodes. The power supply is the major mod. I used bypass caps and beefed up the power supply caps using "Welbourne Labs" "Rule of thumb" on power supply design(20-40 times the output power on caps for tubes). Makes sense because of todays recordings are much more dynamic than 1960's recordings. The normal design had 200uf on outputs and 60 uf on preamp tubes. I went to 800uf and 240uf with 1uf bypass caps. Its sort of like ALK's crossovers, get rid of the cheap old parts. The bypass caps do put a little more strain on power supply but McIntosh transformer is conservativly rated. This may be voodoo to some but in my opinion it was well worth the difference in sound. In my opinion the original parts sounded muddy and slow because of the out of spec caps (higher esr from age). Though some may like this sound I chose to change these parts. Besides would you trust a 30year old amp in your house? I also used all 1% presision flameproof resistors. The important or valuable part of these amps are the bifilar transformers.

  6. Al, I am using the 12db in bottom cabinet for the woofer. I have not decided which direction to take. Mount choke in bottom since I have the terminal cups in bass unit or run a seperate wire from xover and abandon the inputs at bass bin. John
  7. Should the KHorn squawker polarity be reversed?
  8. Should the KHorn squawker polarity be reversed?
  9. Al, Heres the picture of your xover I built. Direct connection, Kimber cable Have not got around to connecting the woofer choke. I am using the one in lower cabinet right now. John
  10. One word, wow! My speakers have reincarnated and come to life with ALK crossovers. The high freq. are so much more detailed and the midrange is laid back. It also seem that imaging has greatly improved. The speakers sound like their response is flatter than before and not so pronounced in the mid section. I used the 3,0 tap on tx for my K55M. I can't believe what these crossovers have done. These speakers now match the detail of my electrostats but exceeds them in dynamics. Goodby old Acoustats and hello khorns!
