  1. I think Al's crossovers make my K-Horns sound more revealing. The closer tolerances also equate to the improved imaging over the old crossover. Couple this with bad electronics and you will get that harsh sound. I have a Rotel RCD-971 with clock upgrade running thru a Bryston .5b pre and Bryston 4B amp. No tone controls and this setup sounds wonderful. Damn near flat!!! If I connect an older cd player (Carver) or say an old pioneer receiver the bright/harsh sound reappears. If you are going to skimp on electronics then I suggest buying some Polks or Boston Acoustics, much less revealing. Just my 2 cents.....
  2. I built Al's crossover exactly per specification and they sound wonderful. Unless you enjoy spending hours on a soldering iron, tinning "Litz" wire, ordering parts, and dealing with backorders spend the extra money and buy Al's already built. Myself, I like the challenge and the hobby.
  3. I checked the resistor and it is fine. This is a intermitant problem and only shows up when playing loud. I guess it needs to break down completly to pinpoint. I like to compensate the neighbors noise from the the new pool they just built 3' from my property line! I usually stand in the other room with remote when checking full output. Not good for the ears at 124+ db!!!!
  4. The crossover is wired correctly. Resistor is after the caps and choke as shown om terminal #5. I built it to the exact standards as specified in drawings by Al K. It may be the ear deafening levels @ +124db causing the heat! The amp is not oscillating. I do not have a fuse in my crossover. I have never blown a speaker based on the my theory that power does not always kill, DC does.
  5. Al, Mark Levinson No. 23 200wpc. It benchs at 288wpc both channels driven. It will not clip easily though on musical peaks. I was playing at concert levels. It did get hot! Will resistors temporarily change value?
  6. I have the ALK's and the 10 ohm resistor gets very hot when playing load. Then the horns start to distort like a bad connection. I know I dont have a bad connection because of connection type. Could the autoformer have a bad connection? Then again has anyone had that much power on their KHorns? Amp is a Mark Levinson No. 23
  7. Elso, How about posting your diagram, I am always looking for a project.
  8. Q-Man Are you insane? You must not be married but if you are willing to give us classes on how to convince our wifes we need your setup!!!!
  9. 2-Spare cornwall x-overs (1-missing smaller coils) 10-2uf caps,4-2.1mh coils,2-autoformers,misc. terminal strips 2-Sets Lascala caps/coils 2-2uf oil caps,2-13uf oil caps,2-coils
  10. I have the fix!!!!! K-43 woofer , McIntosh tube amp or similar No tone controls and it rocks With Bryston 4B it hurts!
  11. How would you measure the chokes? Al, any crude ways to measure these coils? Meter, scope, generator, load resistors?
  12. Al, I have a pair of CP-1 crossovers. Can I use the T2A auto-tx for your design? They have a total of 6 terminal taps
  13. John, I did not inadvertently bypass caps. Al's design is tested and built by him just like his schematic shows. see http://www.web-span.com/alk/
  14. I aquired (3) CP-1 Klipsch crossovers What speakers are these from? I suspect maybe LaScala or commercial version LaScala
  15. Why do I read a total of 39.5uf with 39uf & 1uf bypass paralleled on Al's crossover. Does the typical caps in parallel formula not apply to this?
  16. How about those people who claim more detail from a power cord!
  17. I suspect the T4A was used because of the driver changes as in the woofer circuit. I dont see how these come close to Al's crossovers in sound quality. I'm curious why they use the 25-35uf on woofer circuit. It seems when I connect this 5mh/35uf combo to my Alk's the low end gain is slightly higher and detailed. Any thoughts on this?
  18. Anyine have the AK-3 crossover schematic. I'm curious about the difference between AK-2 & 3
  19. Ditto lerajie Go to radio shack and buy 3prong to 2 prong adapter. It will have a ground pigtail that you will not use. John
  20. In my experience the amplifier will protect itself right at or before clipping. This may or may not be audible. The amp clips when the power supply runs out of current. On musical peaks I found that a little extra capacitance helps the power supply. Clipping kills speakers not power unless its for extended period of time. My rule of thumb is buy an amp at twice the power of speaker. I am running 250wpc on 100wpc speaker and in 15 years never blew a speaker. Even had a 450wpc pro amp at one time.
  21. Float the ground on your amp at the 120v cord or float the computer ground. The first option is best
  22. John, What was the difference between AK-2 and AK-3?
  23. Testing crossovers? I have a scope and a audio generator. What is your method for checking crossover points? Adjust audio gen until db loss and note setting?
  24. Just go to NAPA Auto Parts for terminals They dont corrode or rust and are cheap
