I do like how my Pioneer sounds. I just was kind surprised that pioneer avr's real life output does not match "paper" specked wattage, even tough looks like Pioneer one of the most honest companies.

not sure how much my 110WPC rated pioneer pushing out , but I never turn the volume knob over 45 (100 is the maximum) and at just over 70 it's getting uncomfortably loud to stay in the room.
if I would go all the to a 100 do I have a chance to "clip" my speakers? front and center 150W rated (600 peak), but surrounds only 100W (400 peak).
If you listen to your AVR at 100, you will blow your speakers. The amp will clip under that situation. Clipping is distortion. Distortion in a speaker creates heat. Heat destroys speakers. You will need to get a more powerful AVR or, best choice, go separates.
I better not to go over 75-80 than... I was thinking about yamaha, but looks like inexpensive Yamaha AVR's put out even less wattage than Pioneer.

watched this last night :Got this from Amazon yesterday. Incredible sound track (7.1 Dolby TrueHD) and plenty of non stop action. Highly recommend as a go to demo...
few funny moments (thanks to Bruce), few good action moments (thanks to The Rock), very hot girl (http://www.wallpaperdev.com/stock/adrianne-palicki-beautiful.jpg) but overall it's just "watch one time and forget " movie. even my 12 years old son was not impressed much...

I also went through few more tests and looks like some manufacturers are lying about their power rating more than other. For example Pioneer/Elite receivers (in 5-7 speakers configuration) pushed out 80-85% of their rated wattage, but Onkio and Yamaha did very unimpressive and pushed out less than 50% of what they shouldve:

and these are not $300 receivers!!!
Looks like Pioneer/Elite and Denon are more honest about their product power output than other brands. Is it normal? Do you think 45-55 watt per channel even enough to fill up decent size room with clear sound?
Any other info about power output of the mid line Pioneer/Yamaha/Denon?

I'm using 5.1 too. in my receiver's setting if "No" is selected for the rear speakers and "ON" or "AUTO" selected for the 7.1 to 5.1 convertion than rear speakers audio signal will be mixed with surround L and R signals.
but if "NO" is selected for the rear speakers and "No" for 7.1 to 5.1 convertion these rear audio signals will be not be played at all.
I guess we are not missing much, we just hearing 7.1 through 5.1. in my opinion most important thing about True HD and DTS-HD that they are less compressed higher quality sound format and 2 extra SRS speakers not really important.
Am I wrong?

not sure if my HDMI cables are high end or not (one is 2-3 years old Phillips, another one is no idea how old Microsoft branded cable, both got thick insulation and gold plated connectors) but everything works fine.
we watched 2hd and 3rd part of the Transformers yersterday and even though I can't say that I felt huge improvement I sure love the DTS-HD sound and didn't see any degradation in vidio signal even tough some say that AVR receivers "crash" intensity of the black and darker colors.
I'd say surround effects are brighter and more defined but since I never watched these movies in BD and DTS-HD before I cant speculate about "huge improvement".

I've seen few articles about HDMI cables and also seen more than few users reviews stating that they've seen huge improvement in picture quality when they switched from cheap to expensive HDMI cable.
I found Microsoft branded cable at home- thick but flexible insulation, gold plated connectors, holographic logo -looks pretty fancy
and already hooked it up.anyway, first time ever my receiver displaying True HD and HDMI symbols on display!
we are watching "Revenge of Fallen" Transformers tonight and I'm gonna let you know if really changed anything.

what is "handshake"? distortion?No problem,, I think as long as its got its own power source the handshake issue goes away.
My receiver got some terrible reviews because of hdmi switching,( pita), so I was hesitant about adding a potential problem, but so far so good.
I hope it works well for you also.
I'm planning to use regular Y-splitter, not looking to spend $80-100+ for a good powered splitter.
maybe I'm under "placebo effect" but I do feel defference between Dolby Digital and DTS and prefer DTS.
but DD True HD and DTS-EX down converts to regular DD and DTS due to connection type (at least according to my "googling") and I need HDMI to stream True HD and DTS-EX.
if I would hook up my BD to AVR by HDMI cable would I gain much better (notisably better) sound? Dolby Digital and DTS vs True HD and DTS-EX any significant difference, or optical connection just as good as HDMI in my case?

hello guys.
I'm using HDMI cable for video signal (goes from BD player directly to TV) and optical cable for audio (from BD player to receiver). Unfortunately because of optical cable transfer capabilities I'm not able to get True HD audio -it down grades to Dolby Digital. in my understanding I got only way to go -HDMI for both audio and video.
one option is to use HDMI from BD player to receiver and use second HDMI cable to connect receiver and TV.
second option is to get Y-HDMI splitter and run HDMI cables to TV and receiver.
I don't see much sence in sending video signtal to receiver and prefer to send it directly to TV because sometimes we prefer to watch movies without using receiver and direct HDMI connection in this case comes very handy.
will I loose or gain anything by using HDMI splitter?

no, I'm using my old samsung- it works fine after resent soft update.
I bought S.P.R. blu ray disc.

I needed to rewatch that movie since I got the new sub,lol. Thanks for bring that movie back up.

will do! I've seen it once but I had no 5.1 at that time. pretty sure it sounds better in 5.1!

never seen Avatar in BD before. BD graphics and DTS just an amazing combination!
love my new 12" sub even more now.
Transformers trilogy, Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor are next.

Just by looking at the specs and considering difference in
bass between bookshelf speakers and towers I’d say keep RF-62.Never owned any of these speakers, but used pair of B-3 as
fronts for a little bit in my 5.1 with pretty weak sub and later bought pair of F-3 and noticed huge improvement
right away. Keep in mind that I’m using my set up as HT only and my fronts set
to large (not crossed). I think RB-81 wont be able to deliver as much mid and low bass as RF-62.

I've tried to update my BD some time ago but my soft
was “up to date”. Downloaded another
version yesterday (thanks to Tasdom for reminding me about it) and installed
new soft.Update progress bar stopped at 81% and didn’t move for 20
min… couldn’t cancel it or turn it off, so I pulled power plug out… according
to the update instructions it should’ve crashed existing soft so I was ready to buy
new Pioneer BD off ebay, but decided to try one more time.To my surprise BD
powered on and reacted to every command normally. Second try was successful. Just
to be on the safe side I’ve downloaded same soft again and used different flash drive.Will see if it gonna read all B-ray's now, but everything works fine for now.

I think I would pass. I would prefer to pay more but get new model. most likely I'm going to get something pretty cheap but as new as possible. I might be wrong but I prefer to buy some things (like electronics) new. like I stated above, my samsung only 2 years old and it already need soft update to play some movies. it works fine and plays most of the movies, but I'm getting "need to be updated" error message on some of them.

I double checked specs for my Pioneer and unfortunately I
have only one memory setting for MCACC.I also looked up few new models and looks like Pioneer dropped
“mid-level” receivers:they got VSX-523 for $250 which is pushing out only 80 watt
per channel and missing some features and specs are worse than on my 110w per
channel rated VSX-819. Than 823 which is
$399 and very close to 819 but $100 more, missing 2-nd zone and few more pre outs or inputs
and rated at 80 watt per channel too. Next
step is 1023 for $499 which is sure better than 819 but $200 more.No more “value” models?
