  1. Back to the Jubscala post. Does anyone have the crossover settings for the stock la scalas? I was thinking that while I save up for the big $1000 each k402's, I could buy another dx-38 (I need two since I want my center jubbed out too) and use them with my 2 main speakers with the stock drivers. I was thinking of recapping my three fronts that have the al-3 crossovers with a kit from bob crites for ~$150, but I could get another dx-38 for $450 and have better sound with the equipment I'm going to eventually need anyway. What do you guys think?
  2. I just got home with 4 more la scalas. I drove for 10 hours today. phew. One of the guys I bought them from had 10 la scalas stored in a room. It was some sort of sound company that sets up the sound for large venues. One of the guys that worked there said the la scalas sound great when comparted to thier pro equipment. The only problem with them is the ease of moving them and thier non-modern look. It was a nice little adventure today.
  3. Going to buy 4 more la scalas tomorrow. That will make 9 total. Nine point one surround anyone? It's hard to pass up good deals on these speakers.
  4. I just looked at the ev dc-one. It does have 6 outputs but it only has 2 inputs. I'd need 3 inputs for the left center and right front speakers in two-way configurations. With the 6 outs you could put some kind of super tweeter on top of the k-401 though I suppose. Is there anything reasonably price that would be able to take 3 inputs with 6 outputs for those 3 speakers to be done with only one crossover? I'll be using my receiver for the amp (for right and left channels) and I'll have to buy an external amp for the center channel. Any ideas? How much does a used ev dc-one go for? I got my dx-38 for $450. What should I use to optimize my in room subwoofer response? I don't have the 401's yet and want to play with the dx-38. I downloaded something called an RTA analyzer for my droid phone. Can or should I use that or might I need to invest in a better microphone system vs. the phone microphone for decent results? I bought a serial to usb connector from Fry's for $20. Is that a decent price (seemed high)? Where can I get rca to XLR converters? I ended up buying a rca to big microphone jack and a XLR to big microphone jack. I'd prefer one step to transfer the signal.
  5. Picked up a dx-38 today. I'm on my way to jub-land. lol. If anyone is thinking about making the jub-scala, there is not a need to get the dx-38 electronic crossover specifically. The dx-38 has been chosen by most for a few reasons. 1. It's the one that they used at klipsch when they tested the jub-scala so the file can be sent and loaded in the crossover with no messing with adjustments. 2. Most of the people who have made them purchased them since others here had them and could help troubleshoot if needed. 3. The guy I bought it from explained that it is an old crossover that has increasing value because of us (klipsch people wanting to do this mod). lol 4. The guy (Brian) also said that it was ahead of its time due to having a 24 bit processor and a 2 millisecond response time which is important now with hdmi cables and video processors being so fast that the sound could be delayed and get out of sync with the people talking in tv and movies. It used to only be the other way around where you would have to add delay to the sound to match the picture due to the picture taking so long to process. Now, sometimes it can be the other way around especially with some crossovers having around a 40 millisecond delay vs the 2 ms of the dx-38. Any electronic crossover would work though. All you would have to do is look at the db gain or loss for each frequency (from the klipsch tests) and punch them into your new crossover. You would only have to do that one time. I imagine that would take somewhere between 10 minutes to maybe an hour at most. Brian also said that a crossover with 6 outputs (vs 4 on the dx-38) would be really expensive due to the added proccessing power. I was hoping for one with 6 so I could buy only one crossover for the 3 front speakers as jub-scalas.
  6. No my wife is. Thanks for all the info. I think I'm set on the 402's for now.
  7. Where can I learn what pattern control and polar response mean? I've looked a bit online, but didn't find a definition or explanation. Dr. Who. Where did you go to high school? Streamwood? Coyotee. A 500cc 2 stroke is just plain insane. I raced a cr500 once when my yz125 was broken. It was nuts. All it took was 1/4 throttle to clear jumps that I could never clear on my 125. The only problem was that the gyroscopic effect of the big piston wouldn't allow me to lean much and I could hardly turn compared to the 125.
  8. It seems like the 402's control much lower hz than the 501's even in portrait orientation. I leaning torwards them currently. Is there any reason that the 501's might work better in my setup? Everything I read seems to point in the 402 is better for a lot of the important aspects vs the 501. Other advantages of the 402's for me would be the ablity to add the jubilee bass bins later while matching the width of the 402's. I tend to like things bigger. I prefer my v8 car to my 4 cylinder. I race a 450cc motocross bike instead of a 250cc. I have a liter sportbike instead of a 600cc. I have a 120 inch screen instead of a 70 inch. My room is 13ft 7in wide (If mounted in landscape the 402's would use up about 6 inches outside the room (not a big deal since there is only black theater curtains in that area and no solid door)). The depth of the room is 14ft and the listening area is about 12 feet spread across most of the width of the room.
  9. So are there any specs for nearfield performance. My seating position is only 12 ft from the wall or 10 feet from the speaker. Any ideas on which would be best for that? Awesome info guys. Thanks so much.
  10. Thanks. I think it's time for me to hear those Jubilee's. I wanted to wait until I was at least considering an upgrade. My setup sounds much better now with the la scala center of yours and some tweaking of crossover points and audissey runs. I think I know enough now to talk about the difference between active and passive crossovers and between the 402's and 510's. I'd really like to see that bike again too.
  11. The cinema brochure spec for the K402 list: Horizontal: 90 degree (+/- 20 degree) 220Hz to 14kHz Vertical: 60 degree (+/- 15 degree) 600Hz to 18kHz mike tn I see that the horizontal stays down to 220hz, but the vertical only goes down to 600hz. What difference would this make for the la scala. I think the la scala bass bin goes up to 500hz. In vertical orientation would the 402 be missing the 500 to 600hz sound? What is the specs for the k510? Would the 402 in vertical (portrait) orientation still be better than the k510 in its normal landscape orientation?
  12. I just measured and I will have enough beamwidth to cover all 4 of the front theater chairs completely with 22.5 degrees. That even leaves 2.5 degrees to spare in portrait mode. I also measured out 36 inches wide for landscape and as long as the horns are only 36 inches wide at the face and angle down to a point at the driver, I just might be able to squeeze them into the room without encroaching on the screen. I also measured at the back of the room and I think if I move my chairs forward about 6 inches I can fit in 2 more la scalas for rear speakers. I'll have to figure out if they can be mounted vertically now. This is very exciting.
  13. oh ok, I get it now. I better go and check if that will work. I'll just measure 25 degrees from the edge of each la scala (since vertically the 402's are about the same width). Does anyone know the spread of the original la scala's vertically and horizontally? How different is the sound at the edges of the spread? Oh yeah and that's exactly what Steve has. I bought my center la scala from him. I've got to go back there now and listen to his setup. I didn't want to here those jubilee's until I was getting ready to upgrade.
  14. I'm not sure I get what the degree's mean. Would 100 degrees by going backwards a bit? I'm thinking that 90 degrees verticle would be straight up? In this line of thinking 45 degrees out to the sides would be able to cover my entire listening area. What would be the disadvantage of having the 100 degrees verticle? I know you mentioned possibly using some sound treatments on the ceiling to control the bouncing soundwaves.
  15. I'm considering the 510 or 402 mod to my la scala's too. After realizing how much space the 402's take up, I will not have enough room to place the 402's in landscape but only in portrait. That's not how they were designed. I wonder if a 402 sideways in my smaller (maybe 14ft wide X 16ft) room would work well or if 510's in thier normal landscape configuration would be a better option for me. I think I can see into the throat of the current k55m of my la scalas from all of the seating positions (I have them pointed at the center). I'm thinking of doing the caps too (mine are 1983's I think), but think I should just wait (and save $$) to do the big updrade to the 402 or 510's. I love my current sound, but as like the rest of you, could always enjoy even better sound. I'm also debating putting a couple of la scalas that I just picked up as rears to to keep my heresies for rear duties. The heresies as rears really brought the sound together in movies with active rears such as the iron man 1 flying seen with the fighter jets. Much much better than with the non-heritage speakers I was using. I'm wondering if changing them out to la scalas will give even better movie immersion? I'd have to move my theater seats forward a foot or two, but it might be worth it. Oh, I currently have 3 la scalas up front with the center la scala on its side.
  16. Thanks for the info guys. I too was looking at the space I have in my room and am at a quandry. I, for some reason always thought I could put the k402's in portrait instead of landscape. If I could use them in portrait, I would only need more verticle space. That would work with no issues. Placing them in landscape would require me to move the screen a little to the left and possibly have the 402 flush with the inside of the speaker and overhanging on the outsides. I wonder how silly that would look. There was a discussion about putting the 402 in portrait and whether it would sound good. My question would be if a 501 in landscape would sound better than a 402 in portrait. I'd prefer to buy the 402 based on everyones favorable reviews of it. I'd also like to get the 402's for future proofing. Later I'd like to build a theater in the basement and I may end up going with the jubilee bases since I'd have about 18 feet of width in my design. I suppose I could buy two 501's for the left and right fronts and then buy one 402 for the center. The center 402 could be set on the floor next to the la scala base bin and pointed up a bit. I currently have my center la scala on it's side and its fantastic. I'm sure it wasn't designed to sound good like that but it does. I guess a lot of this stuff is subjective and based on expectations. My expectations would be for much better sound vs standard stock la scalas. I'm guessing I'd get that however I set up the 402's or 501's. I could also sell the 501's when I shifted over to the 402's. What do you guys think? Would 402's in portrait sound better than 501's in landscape?
  17. Wow. I just read this thread from the beginning. It's now 2:30am. There is so much good info here. It sounds like the concensus is the k402 sounds better overall than the k510 and both are big improvements on the original la scala mid and high frequency components. For $2000 you can get two of the k402's with drivers. I'm not sure if this is correct, but someone said they called klipsch and could get 2 k510's with drivers for only $600 total? That sounds like the deal of the century. Does this sound incredible to anyone else? I can get a dx-38 for $450. That would take care of two la scala's. I could also consider the crown amp/crossovers too, but I'm not sure if I need two for 2 la scalas or if one will do. I guess those go for $400 new, but I'm not sure how much used. Total price for a complete setup with dx-38 and k510's would be $1050. Total price for a complete setup with dx-38 and k402's would be $2450. That's a difference of $1400 vs K402's for, according to those who have heard them, much better sound than the stock setup and close but not quite as good as the k402's. Now what to do? I could do the $1050 very soon, but the $2450 would take some time (maybe 4 to 9 months). I'm very happy with my current sound setup. Opinions guys? Oh with the 510's I could also get a crown or another dx-450 (the guy has a few) and a single k510 ($300) for another $750 and have 3 mini jub-scalas for the left, center and right channels of my home theater. btw since I have a good musical sub (Epik Empire (dual opposing 15inch woofers with 600watt continuous and 1500watt peak 130lb, 130db at 80hz)), I may never need the bottom of the jubilee right?
