  1. Hey everyone, I have an RF-83 system and I'm building my own sub to go with it. Doing enough searching here I know that Klipsch was using #40 semi-gloss paints from Valspar/OPEX. Looking into it I'm not sure what that relationship is though unless OPEX produces it and it was just solder under Valspar. Anyway, I was planning on picking up some of the OPEX production lacquers through Sherwin Williams but thanks to the great nanny state of California it's not compliant and they can't even sell me any other lacquer paint since I'm not a professional painting operation (I'm not sure if this was a limitation of this particular store or if it's SW policy). Anyway, I was curious if anyone had any thoughts about some alternatives? Anyone got some spare paint they wanna send my way
  2. Hey everyone, I've had a promedia 4.1 set for nearly 14 years and a few years ago I had to repair it a bit (https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/130304-r12-blown-resistor-replacement/) and it's running into issues again. I'm gonna try fixing it but I had a quick question. Anyone try to hook these up to a receiver (possibly a mini component one)? I know the speakers are 4ohm resistance which can cause some issues. I would imagine for the sub I could just remove the plate amp, and buy a small amp to use to power it instead. What size amp would be good for the sub? This probably wouldn't be a long term solution and would work until I could find a set of speakers to possibly replace them (no idea if that will ever happen though hah). I'm looking for a mini receiver since this is hooked up to my computer so I'd rather not have a bulky receiver. Also, in the past (when I was repairing the sub the last time) I hooked up speakers to the zone 2 on my home theater receiver (RX-A810).
  3. Thanks for the tips. I actually have one of those trim things that I customized a bit to...not suck. I might give dying a test run this weekend but the vinyl route is sooooo appealing. I spent 5 weeks prepping my tv stand and another 24 hours of actual paint time before it was done...
  4. Hey, I have a black ash RF-83 setup currently without a sub. I'm planning on building it myself but I'm having trouble figuring out how to match the black ash finish on the 83's. I tried using minwax ebony stain, which while not looking bad, isn't nearly close to the finish in the speakers. I was going to try dying next but wanted to see if anyone knew an actual process before I wated more time/money. Also, as a last resort, I could get this stuff, but I'd like to use real veneer if possible: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=261-610
  5. Small update for everyone here. I think I'm gonna go the DIY route. I got some recommendations of a dual driver/dual sub combination using a UXL-18. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
  6. Thanks for the doc. That was kinda my concern. It looks like I'd need to spend ~$100 bucks on an amp which I'm not sure is worth it.
  7. Hey, In my quest to get my promedia 4.1s working again I have a sub enclosure with speakers but no amp (hell, no backplate at all). I was looking at getting an aftermarket amp and hooking it up using that. Would something like this work? http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-784 It looks like the sub output is 160 watts rms which I'm not sure this could handle. I'm looking to get the smallest amp I'd need for this. Also, as long as it's smaller than the old plate opening that should be fine as I'm going to build something to attach it Edit: to clarify, this would be a complete stand alone sub, I don't need it to power the speakers or use the control pod
  8. Ya, once I get a house I'm definitely getting a lift. I do too much work on my car as is to not have a good floor jack at this point though. I'll get my money back and then some from the use of it anyway. Thanks for the info to reference_head. I'll have to try contacting them and see what they say. On a related note, am I going to need any additional equipment to get it up and running?
  9. What should one realistically expect to pay for a pb13-ultra (black oak veneer)?
  10. Man, you guys are gonna make me broke I may save up a bit more and get the ultra then. For the same reason I have a $500 floor jack, never gonna have to upgrade that thing as long as I'm alive I have a great spot I could put it but then I can't get in the room from the front door...not gonna lie, not the first time I've considered blocking the door in the name of home theater haha
  11. I still really like the empire but am on the fence between that, the FV15HP, PB12 Plus (and unlikely, but the PB13 Ultra too) One plus for the SVS subs is they use real wood veneer which would be nice since the RF-83 are the same. They also have a longer (5 year) warranty vs the 3 year for the FV15HP and you can replace them within a year if you want to upgrade. I feel like I won't use either of them to their full potential as I some close-ish neighbors but I've gotten to the point where I'd rather buy something once and be settled forever instead of needing to keep upgrading every so often. I think I'm leaning toward getting one sub instead of a dual setup, but who knows how that might change in the future. It's too tough!
  12. After thinking about all the suggestions here I decided to save up a bit and increase my budget. The Epik Empire is at the front of my list (maybe 2 of them?) but I can't make up my mind hah. Maybe some flavor of the SVS-PB12 or the FV15HP. They all seem pretty close I'm still open to other suggestions though. Seems there are too many sub choices hah. I've included a layout of the room the speakers are in. The entire room is the 14x19 but the system is in the 9x14 section of the room. The thing in the upper right is cabinets. The room is a bit odd shaped but I figured I could get the sub now anyway, since I feel it would help, and this way I won't have to upgrade it later.
  13. Am I reading this right? Are the dual Legends on sale for 899? http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/legend.html# Edit: nm, I was mixing up the legend and empire. Less of a shock haha. Also, reference don't give me any ideas. I've already ruined my last 3 vacations by building a table, tv stand and a small shed haha
  14. Quick question, I'm pretty sure this is true but I wanted to check. When using the audio input on the promedia 4.1 control pod is it only 2.1? Is there anyway to get 4.1 out of the control pod only? I'm wondering because the computer I have is an old alienware one I got with the speakers, which is 12+ years old now (and still kickin). It's a loud and power hungry SOB and at this point the only thing I use it for is a receiver. I was hoping there was some way to bypass it. Side note, I have a receiver with a zone 2 setting (rx-a810) which I had been using with the speakers only while my amp was out of commission. Could I run it through that somehow? The zone 2 out is RCA connections. I can't use zone 1 though as I have my main home theater running through that.
