  1. I love being my own problem solver when it comes to setting up stereos/ home theaters, but I really need someone's help with this odd setup: My mom's living room is going to be her home theater. It is in an old house, built back when living rooms were built around fireplaces, i.e., the fireplace is exactly where the TV should go, and sticks out into the room about a foot or more... so, she has the TV in the corner to the left of the fireplace (that's where it's gonna stay), pointing diagonally at the rest of the room... the room is about 12 x 25, a perfect rectangle, but the long wall opposite the fireplace has a large cutout into the foyer (not a big long solid wall by any means), so here's my quandry: Where should the surround speakers go, since the setup is diagonal instead of straight-on? If you'd like a rough sketch of the room, let me know and I'll e-mail it to you for a better understanding. Thanks! ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  2. I'm not supposed to do this, but if you don't mind buying something 4 years old, I have a Yamaha RX-V990, Dolby Digital-Ready (requires separate processor, read on) 100 X 3, 25 X 2 for rear, .0125% distortion AND a Yamaha DDP-1 Dolby Digital processor (that I've never used, I bought it just so I could bundle these 2 together) for the price you're talking about. Only thing is, you won't get DTS unless you get another processor for that - if that matters to you... If not, there are all kinds of receivers around that would push those speakers for less than $500, even less than $300... I've got a friend looking at a Yamaha HTR-5250 on eBay right now for $250, and it's 100x5 with Dolby Digital and DTS built in...that seller has 5 of them. Feel free to e-mail me. There's a Yamaha HTR-5280 w/ Dolby Digital Matrix (6.1) and DTS, 110 x 5, etc, on eBay right now, buy-it-now for 549. It's new in box, retails for $800. Not a bad deal. I would imagine they need alot of power, and probably an EQ. You say they sold for $300 / pr? That's cheap-cheap. I would be suspicious at that price on what kind of quality goes into them. I say... go listen to them. I think you will be VERY impressed. They weren't made cheaply, no sir. For some reason, he just sold them at that awesome price... and had the guts to guarantee them to sound as good or better than any $1000 pair in the world - or your money back. The drivers are polypropylene, and like I said somewhere else, the 15" woofer goes down to 24hz (and, yes, you can definitely tell the difference between a speaker that only goes down to 30 and one that goes to the low 20's or below) so it's a subwoofer all in itself - they can be bi-amped, too. As far as having to push them, sensitivity is in the 90's, so, no, I only had them on a really cheap Technics receiver in college - 70 w/ch or something like that and they shook the walls... now, hooked to the RX-V990, they shake the neighborhood! And I don't have to turn it up much past 9:00 (6:00 is zero) to get the house to feel it. Nothing was skimped on, if that's what you're thinking. The 8" midrange is awesome, and even the relatively small ribbon tweeter... They're great speakers, and for that price, unbeatable (except for now that klipsches and other brands are on eBay and other auction sites - and the fact that they're not magnetically shielded). I've had 'em 11 years now, and they've taken many, many trips back and forth from my parents' house to college... still immaculate. And, no, I don't have an EQ either, just the bass extension and bass/treble controls on the V990... tell him to crank 'em for you sometime (that is, if his system CAN crank)... don't expect them to sound like klipsches because they don't, but their sound is VERY full and rich, and I dare say fuller than the klf 30's (by themselves without a sub) because of the lower bass capabilities. Mid and high, the klipsches win, hands down because of the horns and the brightness that's engineered into them... but, like i said, i think you will be impressed by the dbx's in their own right... they still blow away anything sold currently by Circuit City or Best Buy (infinity, cerwin-vega, jbl, etc) ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x5 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA connection to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound! 4. crazyeddie has the KSW-12 for 290 + shipping... should I just jump on that? 6. Continuing my mom's home theater... want you guys' expert opinions: Is the KSW-10 the best powered sub for under $250? crazyeddie's price is 218 + shipping. Will I do any better than that with any other brand? ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x5 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA connection to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  7. Thank you all. Now, since this is the only thread of mine that is getting any replies, maybe you guys can answer my other question here: I'm putting my mom's home theater together and have the receiver and now the KSC-C1 as the center channel. I have found the KG 3.5's on uBid for as little as $89 apiece. Are these good matches for the KSC-C1? I believe they are, just want some assurance. Thanks! ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x5 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA connection to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!

I have dbx Soundfield V's that I got back in '90 from DAK - anybody remember that techie mag from the 80's? Anyway, they kick serious butt, especially for only $300/pr. They're not as efficient or as bright as the C7, so I've had to turn the center volume down... but, they've got 5 drivers, 15" woofers that go down to 24hz for serious bass, even more serious than most powered subs... but, like I said, they're not magnetically shielded, and eventually they'll wind up in a music listening room or something (because they are awesome for music), and be replaced by powered towers... sorry, but I'm sold on the powered tower concept. the sub can use the volume of the entire cabinet, and you also save the space that 2 separate subs would take up. The only store around here that sells the def techs is in raleigh, a 45-minute jaunt, so I'm going to go over there and see how the big boys sound... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x5 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA connection to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  9. thanks for the advice... can the KLF 30's be bi-amped? I sort of remember that they can.... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x5 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA connection to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  10. Some of you have mentioned good prices on eBay... have you seen uBid ? they're even better. I'm putting my mom's home theater together and just bought her a KSC-C1 center channel from uBid. uBid also has the KG 3.5's for 80 bucks a piece. Would these be a good complement to the KSC-C1 at that price? Are they even worth that price? (I have no idea about these older ones, don't think I've ever heard them) They seem comparable, though, as far as efficiency... the 55 watt power handling spec kind of scares me - can they really only take 55 watts? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance! This message has been edited by drewzter on 06-27-2001 at 03:12 PM
  11. welcome me to the world of Klipsch, officially! I've been looking at/listening to them for years at a local store, but never had the $$$ if you know what I mean... so after this year's great tax refund, it was time to take the plunge. the only thing my system was missing was a center channel speaker (was using a tiny Realistic!) so... I got the KLF C7 from eBay. I wasn't going to piddle around with the 5.25" or 6.5" centers from Klipsch or Polk or anybody... there's just not much better you can do than 2 8's in a center speaker, IMO. Anyway, I LOVE it, of course. It hasn't really gotten that much use yet, but it will. Eventually, I will replace my front mains since they're not magnetically shielded. I'm not going to skimp with that purchase either, and will be looking exclusively at towers with built-in powered subs. Anyone here that can recommend the ones Klipsch makes? I'm leaning more towards dishing out the 2 grand or so for the Definitive Technology BP series... what do you guys think? all will be powered by a Yamaha RX V1 (or its replacement by the time I'm ready to buy that)
