  1. Yea I actualy saw your thread and read a lot of it. I really liked the solution you took and that's awesome that you have a friend who custom made this for you. I wish I could do the same thing but the space between the right side of the couch and the east wall is only about 28 inches. The RB-75 is nearly 12 inches deep. For wall mounting I could try to mount it above the curtain rod but I wouldn't be able to get much of an angle to point it at the listening position.

  2. I just got a pair of these monster bookshelf speakers and I have already fallen in love with their sound. I bought them with the intention to use them as my rear surrounds with my RF-7s and, hopefully, RC-7 for a 5.1 system. I looked at the size dimensions and weight before buying and still thought it would be possible to use them as my rears. Once I brought them home I knew I would have a slight problem mounting them.

I need to ceiling mount these because while the left wall of my room is good for shelf mounting one RB-75 the right wall has a very large window with curtains on it. So side wall mounting is out of the question. I could possibly do stands behind the listening position couch but I'd really like to avoid that if possible since I'm afraid of them getting knocked over and stuff (not to mention the amount of room this would take up).

I found a few threads on mounting the RB-75 but most are for wall mounting not ceiling. I found this one http://community.klipsch.com/forums/p/56212/544248.aspx but I'm pretty sure (after looking up the mounting bracket he used) that he was also wall mounting. Here is a picture of the layout of my room to show you what I mean. Not sure why it showed up like that. Click on image and then click again to zoom in and make it view properly.

Any ideas on ceiling mounting RB-75s?

  3. Yea I definitely plan to do that. It's so hard to test though since it does not ALWAYS happen. For instance, I watched like 3 hours of shows last night and it didn't do it at all. Sigh, so I have to wait for it to do it then switch the connections. Also, is it safe to do all of this with receiver and amp on? I have been turning the amp off and then messing with connections for fear of something blowing or cracking and what not. I don't think it's a bad interconnect cable since there are very nice, high end, shielded, Monster cables that the guy gave me with the amp. And yea, troubleshooting does come somewhat easy to me because I'm in IT. Networking and Communications Management major here so I am a nerd and want to figure everything thing out and try all possibilities lol.

  4. Thanks again for the kind words all. So I acquired the Parasound HCA 1205A (140w x 5) on Friday night and hooked it up. The guy threw in his 5 monster interconnects too so that was nice. Before buying we hooked it up to his Axiom speakers and tested each channel one by one at a pretty high volume. It sounded great and there no hum, distortion or anything like that. The unit itself was in great condition too, a friggin tank.

I took it home and hooked it up to the pre-outs on my Onkyo and then the speakers. Powered it up and did some stereo listening first and wow it really did sound a lot better than my Onkyo. Switch to 5 channel stereo and sounded amazing as well. I knew on my Onkyo before this same switch from 2 channel to 5 channel stereo mode showed a clear difference in power level. With the Parasound it didn't lose anything and just kept chugging the music with deep lows and great highs. I then switched to my reference scene from Ninja Assassin (the opening scene) and it sounded awesome as well.

Afterwards, a friend and I were just watching some Modern Family (in Dolby I believe) and about 5 min before the end of the episode the center channel started acting very strange. It sounded almost as if a cable was loose because the sound was there but whenever a person started to shout or even talk at a higher volume it would cut out. Then it would come back and start to cut out again. Wtf, I thought. I checked all cables and they seemed fine. I looked at the level knob on the back of the Parasound and all but the center channel were at the max, the center was about 80%. So I turned it up to max and the stuttering/flakiness went away. I thought to myself - whew that was easy. Yea...not so much. The rest of that night I watched about an hour more of 5 channel content and it never did it again. However, the next morning I went to watch another show and bingo it started happening again in the same way. Not really sure what would cause this since I'm very much a newbie when it comes to amps. I am going to move the center channel speaker to another port in the back of amp and try to determine if it's just that channel on the amp or the pre-out port on the Onkyo (seems unlikely?).

  5. [

Only because you asked I would have paid about 500 tops for the pair because of that corner. Ones in good shape sell for about 800-1000 I think. I have seen some that sell for around 600 with dented cones but you can replace the driver for about 150.

Oh wow, looks like you're definitely a stickler eh? I mean the speaker sells for like $850 each brand new on Amazon right now (since it's the newer Classic RF-7 and all). I definitely didn't get THAT good of a deal then if 500-600 is what you'd pay. I did ask though so I appreciate your input. I can tell I will get my money's worth out of these babies already [:D]

  6. Be-A-utiful!!! Wow. I really like those. Love my cherry original 7's, but those are gorgeous.

They remind me of "decorator" Heritage gear. Just stunning. If not for the corner blemish, the grills would never see the light of day in my house!!

    Congrats!!

Ps- an added bonus is that 7s kick A LOT of tail in the sound department too!!!

Thanks again kind sir. Yea I think even with the corner blemish I might keep the grills off most of the time (except when my friends are all over playing pool and ping pong in the adjacent room connected by a half wall...they're animals that can't be trusted). The room they're in is very dark most of the time due to blacked out windows and dim lighting so you only see the corner damage when up close and looking at it. Can't really tell from the listening position.

On a side note - what do you think a good price for these is? Not that I'm at all uncomfortable with what I spent on them but I'm a curious dude. Chime in with what you would all individually pay for them if you were buying them used from someone. With knowledge of the corner damage of course because I knew that before buying as well and of course used to it to haggle the price a bit.

  7. Thanks for the background on the RF-7 line. I knew most of that but I actually didn't know the specific ones I bought were from 2009 or newer. I figured they were the old RF-7s but obviously they can't be. That's great news to me since that means they don't have an enormous amount of wear just yet (as least not as much as if they were from 2003 let's say). Yea it really is the best color I've ever seen on a Klipsch as well. I hooked them up last night and loved the added bass and depth of sound compared to my RF-82s. I can definitely tell I need to upgrade my center now though (currently an RC-35). I had to adjust that channel level up a few notches to compensate. Now I just gotta find me an RC-7 or RC-64. Only kinda bad thing is that neither come in a dark cherry of course so it won't be a perfect match but the good thing is that my center would be somewhat hidden except for the front/grill so it shouldn't be too bad at all. To be honest I wouldn't even care either way, I love these RF-7s already! Hopefully going to buy a used amp tonight. Either a Parasound HCA 1205A or Adcom GFA-6000. I know which one is better mind you but my budget and the seller's willingness to bargain will dictate which one I end up with.

  8. Thanks again guys. I can't wait to get home and enjoy them. What does them being RF-7 classic mean exactly? I mean I knew they weren't RF-7II's before buying them but I didn't know much else past that. And I really do like the dark cherry color a lot. Looks even better in person. I just wish the top right corner wasn't damaged so badly. The screen covers it but still it's a tragedy. Here's a pic of it - yikes. The previous owner said he put the chunk of wood back in and used wood glue and a dark cherry stain to attempt to repair it... [:|]

There is no damage to the sound or components as far as I can tell. The woofer cones look perfect and the tweeter and horn area looks great.

  9. Sweet! I just got a pair of dark cherry RF-7s and I love the finish and look of them! There's some unfortunate damage to the top right corner of the front of one of them but luckily the grill covers it completely. Haven't hooked them up yet to my system but I sure am excited to after work. They sounded great in the house I demo'ed them in before buying and it was definitely a less than ideal set up. He had one at the front right corner of the room and another where like a side left surround would go and no center channel (used the TV speakers for a center...wtf?). Anywho, I popped in some rap - sounded awesome. Popped in some older jazz - amazing. He put in a Celine Dion live concert DVD (lame...) but it sounded incredible. The clapping from the audience was so detailed and isolated. I was blown away. And his gear wasn't anything too crazy either. He had an older higher end Yamaha receiver that he said put out 100 wpc and an EQ machine which I turned everything to 0 (neutral) before listening.

Now I just gotta find a nice amp to put behind them and open em up. Oh and also get an RC-7 or RC-64 because I just have an RC-35 for now. So stoked!

  10. Congrats. That is great price for a 708. If I was you I would mess around with it before you pull the trigger on a new amp. I was just like you when I purchased my new receiver, I was already planning on a new amp to go with it. I found that my SC-35 put out more than enough power to run my reference system at atom splitting levels, I am sure your 708 will do the same.

I was coming from a Pioneer VSX-1020K so it was no slouch or anything like that. But I definitely will give it a good audition before buying an amp. Thanks for the suggestion.

  11. Well I pulled the trigger on the Onkyo TX-NR708. I got it last night for $230 and the guy even gave me his receipt from Crutchfield from this past December in case I need to get it serviced under warranty. We tested one of the HDMI ports and about 3 speakers terminals and it sounded good so I took it home. Haven't hooked it up to all my equipment yet but I'm excited. Thanks again for the advice dudes. Now to decide on an amp...hmmmm. There is a Adcom GFA-6000 really close by for $225. I'm definitely thinking about that one but not sure just yet. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/ele/2513108431.html

  12. I have the 708 and use it as a hybrid pre/pro. The front three are run off of 125 wpc monoblocks and the other four are run via the receiver.

This is exactly how I plan to use it. That's reassuring, thanks a lot. Looks like the price I may be paying isn't too shabby either. As for heat, thankfully I installed some small USB powered fans (think small PC case sized) in my entertainment cabinet that are plugged into the USB ports of certain devices (receiver, PS3, Xbox360, etc). Then the fans only power on when that device comes on. It's worked pretty well so far. My PS3 still gets moderately warm when watching a blu-ray for more than 2 hours or so but it's not bad.

  13. Yea, I use my system 70% for movies, 20% for music (mostly 2 or 3.1 channel), and 10% for video games. So it sounds like it should be a good deal as long as it works fine and everything. I will prolly go buy it tonight and the guy said I can test it out first and what not. The only thing that worries me is a quick search on it shows hundreds of reliability problems when it first came out. Amazon's reviews for example are pretty horrible and say it broke down for a lot of people in 6 months or sooner. The seller says he bought his in January of this year from Crutchfield. I'm just wondering why he's letting it go for so little when, even used, it's probably worth like $400.

  14. That's definitely a good point about the first watt being important. The only reason I'm going with a receiver now with pre-outs is so that I don't have to use a dedicated pre-amp. Getting one with HDMI switching is going to be hard to find for my price range ($500 or less). So I figure I can just get a nice receiver now then when I go to an amp down the road I don't have to buy much more. Is that thinking correct? I am very new to the amp world and higher end home theater in general so definitely let me know if I said something stupid.

You are very right about not worrying about the watts between the two receivers because if I go to separates down the road it won't matter anyway (not to mention the db to watts ratio).

  15. I might as well post the amps I'm thinking about as well if anyone would like to know.

    Sherwood Newcastle AM-9080, $360 - http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele/2604365584.html

    Adcom GFA-7000, $340 - http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele/2617285366.html

Emotiva XPA-5, $650 - http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/ele/2616881231.html (a large jump in price I know but if you all feel like it is $300 worth better than the other two I may have to consider it...)

    Thanks again.

  16. Hey guys I am buying a new receiver within the next two weeks or so and I'd like any opinions on the following options. I want to go the used route so I searched my local Phoenix, AZ craigslist and the Orange County/LA, CA craigslist as well (because I'll be travelling there anyways in the next two weeks). I found the following two deals: a Pioneer Elite VSX-94TXH for $500 OR a MARANTZ SR6005 for $479.

My basic criteria for a new receiver is as follows: $500 or less, pre outs for all channels (so I can use a separate amp down the road), 110 wpc or more, at least 4 HDMI inputs, 7.1, and support for current home theater audio formats.

The clist and amazon links for each are here:

    Pioneer - http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/ele/2618511205.html - http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Elite-VSX-94TXH-receiver-channel/dp/B000WY0HUW

    Marantz - http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele/2607679371.html - http://www.amazon.com/Marantz-SR6005-Audio-Video-Receiver/dp/B003R7KMRE

Upon first look I would say the Pioneer since it has 140 wpc and the Marantz is 110 wpc. They both have pre outs and the Marantz has even more HDMI ports than I need so that's nice to have for growth. However, it does not have a remote. I currently use a Logitech Harmony 880 so that shouldn't be a problem but it's still nice to have the actual devices' remote sometimes. I know a lot of people that swear by Marantz but I know the Pioneer Elite line is great too. Any advice would be great. I am really only interested in these two at this time but if you're feeling extra helpful for some reason you're more than welcome to find something you feel is better than both. My Klipsch system is in my sig (with an RC-7 soon to come hopefully) so check it out if needed.

    Thanks in advance!

  17. Yea I was thinking the same thing ^ regarding make large purchases (regardless if it's no interest for X months). Obviously it's your decision and all though.

I am going to second the recommendation for the Emotiva UMC and XPA 5 instead of an overpriced receiver. I've been seriously thinking about getting both of those myself but just haven't pulled the trigger yet. So while I don't actually own these 2 devices and can't vouch for them personally I also haven't read one bad thing about them on these forums. Might wanna look into it as an option at least.
