  1. thanks alot, cornwaller and whell I have to say both of you are quite right. Now I can see that when you do analog signal processing, there are a million factors affecting the final sound coming out the speakers so it's difficult to judge the DAC based on the limited experiments I have done. Then what about the my second question? As I understand, the digital output should give the signal which is the digital information recorded on the cd so there is no quality factor involved. it's either right or wrong, isn't it? If so, the digital output of different players should give the same digital signal as long as the disc is the same, right or wrong? Or maybe a good player makes less mistakes when reading a disc. I guess that's why cd/dvd player advertisments alsway say something like "precision optics". Happy new year!
  2. I have been playing CD's and DVD's using the same connection (optical SPDIF) to my receiver for a year now. That means I am using the D/A converter in the receiver instead of the one in the sony DVD player. I have done the comparison between digital connection and analog connection(w/ regular stereo RCA cables, of course) and the sound of digital connection is better indeed. A friend of my listened to it and said that meant the D/A converter in the Marantz receiver is better than that in the Sony DVD player obiviously and if I upgrade the sony to a Marantz CD player and use the analog connection it would be EVEN BETTER! His reason is that the converter in a good CD player should be better than that in a receiver because it's dedicated for two channel audio instead of H/T. Is he right? Also, is there any difference in terms of quality between the digital output of a good player (marantz) and an average player(sony)?
  3. The merger is a shocker!. What can I say. Sleep well, onkyo, kenwood. Here is the website of the merged company: http://www.dm-holdings.com/ From what I know about mergers: There is very few real mergers. But there is a thing called acquisition which happens by a stronger player buying a smaller player and calling it a merger to give the smaller player some face. Think Boeing getting McDonald Dogulas and Dymler-Benz getting Chrysler, the list goes on and on. So the real question in this case is who bought whom? Anyway, when can we see the effect of the merger in their new models? if any. My guess is they are gonna concentrate Marantz on music while Denon on H/T. Love to know more about it.
  4. I bought a marantz 5200 receiver last september after about 2 months of research and consideration between that and DENON 2802. The first unit had noises in two channels and the second has been working fine so far. It teams up with my klipsch synergies. It sounds awesome. Today I did a little research on line because it's close to the time new models come out. I am surprised that, first, on yahoo shopping, there are at least 5 times more denon receivers for sale than marantz's. Second the denon reviews in audioreview.com outnumber those of marantz in a similar fashion. I remember last year this time, the two brands had about equal market presence. SO, WHAT HAPPENED TO MARANTZ? DO THEY REALLY HAVE SYSTEMATIC QUALITY PROBLEMS? Also, how does denon receivers compare to marantz's when primary use is to play rock music instead of movies?
  5. that's my problem! I CAN do that. I just have to do the marantz setup everytime I change from CD to DVD or visa versa. Basicaly, marantz can't use the same input automaticaly. I have to tell it what it is. The only way to tell it is to run the OSD setup. In OSD I assign CD to digi1 input (the connector I use to connect the sony player.)then DVD is empty. I assign DVD to digi1 then CD is empty. I can't marantz know CD and DVD are the same player.
  6. Just bought both of them. I connected them with one optical cable and hoped it work for both CD music and DVD soundtrack. In the marantz setup menu i can assign the digital input from the player to either CD or DVD but never both. It looks like marantz can take two different signals from one input, I just have to do the setup everytime. Is there a way to do both with one digital connection or I have to get another coax digital cable and connect them individually. (I use Klipsch synergy 3.1 speakers, they sound awesome.)
  7. try yahoo shopping/electronics. that's where I got prices of 1602, 1802 and 3802.
  8. 3802 seems to have some other features other than DPL2. I read something about bass management. I don't what it means.
  9. new models from denon are UNofficially out already, even though there's nothing in their site. I just searched the prices of 1602, 1802 and the almighty 3802, all equipped with ProLogic II, of course. I read something about new receivers from marantz, too. Does anyone know about it or know where to find info about it? I am perticularly interested in the successor of marantz sr-4000.
  10. thanks on the H/K advice. my question is: isn't H/K too bright for Klipsch horns?
  11. I just bought a set of Klipsch speakers: KSB3.1 front pair, KSB center and quintet rear pair. I am now shopping for a receiver to go with them. I will be using the system 70% for rock music and 30% for movies(which is why I settled on quintet as rears). As you can see, it's meant to be an entry level system, so the budget for a receiver is around $300. After the first round reading in audioreview.com I narrow it down to: Marantz SR-4000, Denon 1601 and Onkyo 494. Denon is slightly favored in this forum. Onkyo has Dolby Pro Logic II which seems useful. Marantz doesn't even have DTS but I got the impression it sounds warmer and suits for Klipsch's which are on the bright side. Everybody's opinion needed for the final decision!!! Thanks,
