  1. Good call outs dtel. Regarding the backs, are you suggesting that they are sold by 3rd party companies or just size/cut/fit via plywood? I'm intrigued and would do either since I think they will be right where this one is for a while (in front of the double-pane picture windows). The 2nd speaker is in my garage now and suspect it will end up downstairs but I'm not that far along. Noticed your profile pic...are you a reggae fan by chance? I have another question on these now. I saw some 1974's on the forum with a darker oatmeal color cloth which made me wonder if it was an option to choose the speaker fabric. I have stock HBRs with black cloth, and after looking closely at my Khorns I'm convinced that the HBRs and Khorns are both black stock cloth. There is a few faint spots of dark epoxy where I think the pie logo was affixed on the Khorns, and I'm at least thinking I should find some aftermarket or original logos, if available; what is everyone's thoughts on this? I Thanks! Dan
  2. Thanks again everyone for the continued feedback on these. I've already spent quite a bit of time researching here, and they sound dang amazing as-is. Like I did with my older Heresy's, I suspect it will be the better part of a year moving them around and just listening before I decide to do anything. As far as the purchase, the hardest thing to do was waiting 3 full days taking a gamble that others wouldn't take them before I showed up the last day ready to deal. I'm very much a happy camper!
  3. Thanks for your perspective. I think have quite a while before and if I do anything, but will enjoy the research on these for sure.
  4. Thank you for confirming for me. I had a gut feel all along that they were 1973 but that just might have been because it was the year I was born!
  5. 10-4 and roger that. HiFi budget is totally shot!
  6. Thanks for the call out. I was actually wondering about that and they are destined for a new corner of my front or lower room soon.
  7. Here are the SNs and thanks for checking out if you have a few minutes. I have a lot of research to do before I waste anyone's time further here, but the older I get the more I'm inclined to leave things period specific and go with old parts just for the sake of the original design. However if it's sonically better with Crites or new caps and such I'm pretty sure I'll go with that. K-B-WO; 5M712 and 13.
  8. Thank you!!! I'm probably like a lot of chaps just thinking about these kinds of things for years and years, then the situation presents its self and it's not even a question. Hammer the bank account and just go for it. It's the last thing I really need with kids in high school coming into cars and college and such, but damn the torpedoes. Lemon string I see you have the Schiit Bifrost DAC and I just got the AKM 4490 upgrade delivered last week and installed it. I usually don't rave about technicalities but I listened to a few reference songs on my Heresy IIs and was really pleased. Might be worth checking that out. I had the Uber circuit prior to the new AKM upgrade available on their website.
  9. Thanks everyone for the feedback and links. I have some research to do, but in the meantime I'll continue to upset my wife and kids with these
  10. Sorry more info - AA Crossovers and the Klipsch site has been down for SN lookup.
  11. Hi all, I just picked up a very beautiful set of walnut Khorns that are sequentially numbered in fantastic shape for 1,600. First question, is that that reasonable? I told me wife it was something that we had to act on so I hope I'm within boundaries...I think I am. My second and most important question is how should I properly rebuild the crossovers with period-correct hardware? I have some older Heresy's that I rebuilt with the Crites kit but do not want to mess up these awesome speakers. Thanks, Dan
  12. Hi Muel - Yes I'm planning on getting a case for it. My kids are old enough to know better, then again they are kids! Am I tracking right that you're suggesting that I should invest in a dedicated DAC? I was doing some research online, and some were suggesting that the delta between the SB DAC vs. a stand-alone DAC would be nominal and not worth the extra 500 dollars or so. I doubt this given the rave reviews for some of the DACs available now. Thanks! Dan
  13. Hi all, I'm currently running a Marantz 2238b with efficient Klipsch Heresy speakers. I'm at the point where I'd like to get into a tube unit and planned on picking up a mainline tube amp, but started to have eyes for a local Fisher 500c. I ultimately will be streaming Pandora/Spotify via a Squeezebox Touch (wife and kids), and FLAC audio via input to the SB for myself. I am thinking that if I pick up the Fisher I can use the AUX in for the SB (and perhaps a new dedicated DAC) and benefit from the nice tube sound in lieu of a dedicated mainline. Does this make sense? I'd appreciate any feedback and/or direction on this. Thanks! Dan
  14. Nice. My dad is a big Denon fan and I had a chance to take his equipment to college (20 years ago) but it didn't fit in my van Knowing what I know now I would have made room! I came into the Heresy I's by accident at a local thrift store - I love them. I run a turntable so the phono is a plus. Your comment about power reserve makes good sense. I contacted a fellow on CL about a 2252 so we'll see what happens there! Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated.
  15. I've come to the conclusion that that approach would be most prudent. The only issue now is that I'm come to learn that the prices for these at the shop are twice as much as what can be found on CL. There's a nice refurbished 2253b for 250, at the local shop the as-is 2230 is 250. I'll have to noodle on next steps. I see you are running a 2245. How did you come to Marantz, and have you tried your Heresies with other equipment?
  16. I have a pair of matching 1980 HBR's that I'm using to build a basic 2 channel system for my front room. Here are some questions I have: I've read good things about the low output Marantz 22xx receivers and how they pair nicely with the Heresy and produce the classic "Marantz" sound. I currently run the speakers through a Marantz SR400 from the early 80's. My question is, will an upgrade to the 22xx produce a marked difference? My local Hi-Fi shop has a 2215B, 2220B, 2230 and 2235B. Any thoughts on these? Another option is to skip the Marantz and go straight to a tube receiver, which is eventually where I want to be. Are there any recommendations on FM/AM tube receivers that would match well? Any models under around $800 that also have a nice phono input? I'm in the process of procuring new caps for the HBR's and want to do a little experimenting , so I'm planning to get 2 Sonicaps and 2 Solens. I'll recap 1 with the Solen and compare to the original caps. Assuming the Solen sound is better than original I'll recap the 2nd with Sonicaps and compare the newly-capped speakers and buy the remaining 2 caps that sound better. A little wasteful, but sounds like fun. Thanks for any direction here! Dan
  17. Thanks - I'm afraid AM is a must here in Colorado....
  18. Thanks for the info! I did a little research on the boards and the capacitor replacement sounds like a quick/clean way to improve the sound quality for minimal investment. So disregarding my 500 budget, what basics should I be looking for in a stereo and pre-amp? I have an old Yamaha 600 series that died right before I got these so I'm using a Yamaha R-30 that I found on the side of the road for now. I have these in my front room and think it's all I can swing without pissing off my neighbors
  19. Hi all! I need to preface that I'm completely green and really need help. I bought some 1980 HBR speaks from the original owner and they sound great through my old solid state reciever but I'd like to know thoughts around building a system around these. I listen to records and radio and would like to get input on what would be a good receiver to mate these to - tube I suspect - under 500 would be optimal. Any general direction around how to build a system around these 2 magnificent speakers would be greatly appreciated. I listen to old country, classic rock, blues, that kind of thing. Thanks all glad to read the great threads y'all have here!
