  1. By the way any idea what the problem might be, and is it worth fixing? I bought the unit brand new and sealed from ebay a few years back; doubt it is covered under warranty. Might grab the RW12d from Newegg which has it discounted for $299 for the next few days (an authorized dealer too!).
  2. I connected the sub to my blu-ray player and popped in an audio CD. I heard a very faint sputter so I cranked the gain on the sub to the max and I got this scratchy, half-hearted clipping type sound (really not sure how to describe the sound). So I guess it's safe to say my sub is dead?
  3. I'm pretty sure I have told the receiver there is a sub; I select the 5.1 option, and it attempts to detect the sub. This is all using the automated setup system. When I get a chance tonight I will try doing the manual configuration.
  4. I have an RPW-10 that was working great connected to an HK AV 354 for 2-3 years. The HK died and so I replaced it with a Marantz NR1602. The new receiver does not detect the sub when using hte Audessey calibration program. If I just pop in a movie, the sub does not output any sound. Any suggestions/tips? What are some alternative ways I can test the sub? I have already tried swapping the cable; I don't have another receiver to test on as my old one is bricked. The only sign of life I get from the sub is if it is powered on with the cable connected, if I touch the tip of the other end to a metal contact it will emit a buzzing sound. I have hardly touched my system over the summer so I have no idea when I could verify my sub was last working on the HK receiver. As far as the receiver failure goes it was just the HDMI subsystem that went (very common problem for that model).
  5. Are the Synergy SLX speakers designed to be either wall or stand mounted only, or is there any kind of built-in mechanism that allows you to rest it on a console table? I'm sure a custom stand could be made to accommodate such a setup, but my preference is to not have that extra step. Thanks.
  6. Thanks for the replies. I'm in the Boston area. I think I may shoot for a sub 10 or 12. I searched for reviews on the 10 and it seems that several people got it from BestBuy for $199 in the Nov/Dec '06 timeframe. Not sure if it was a black Friday deal or what. Any opinions on some of the newer models like RPW-10 or RW-10d? They can be had at pretty reasonable prices on ebay; new in sealed box.
  7. I'm looking for a sub to go along with my RCX-4 and (4) RSX-4s; any suggestions? I had been looking for an RW-8, but they don't appear to come up for sale on the secondary market too often, so I'm looking for alternatives. My receiver is HK AVR-147. I'm open to suggestions for a Klipsch or non-Klipsch sub. Ideally, I'd like to spend as little as possible, and realistically, prepared to spend $250-400. I would expect a sub that matches my speakers to fall in this sort of price range anyways. My room is roughly 10'x14', and 8' high ceilings. 3 sides of the room are completely walled off, and the other side opens up into the kitchen and two hallways. So I had been placing my sub in the front corner where two walls meet. The 14' length I mentioned is the part I would consider my living room area, but the open air area extends a few more feet to the kitchen countertop that is about 3 feet high and forms a partial barrier. Also, I have noticed that most lower cost subs are not magnetically shielded. What types of devices could this adversely affect, and how far away from the sub would I need to place these devices? Thanks.
  8. Anyone know where I can find an RW-8 for sale? I strongly prefer silver just to match my other equipment. Brand new in box would also be preferred over a used unit. Thanks.
  9. These are on the bay, just search for "Klipsch DD-5.1" if you're interested. Thanks.
  10. I just purchaesd an A/V receiver and will be selling my DD-5.1. Feel free to message me if you are interested. I am looking for a something in the area of the ebay "going rate". If I'm not able to sell it, it will get posted on ebay. The item works perfectly; never had any problems with it. It shipped directly from Hope, AR in Dec 2002. I have always had it connected to a HT filtering power strip. I used it initially with my Promedia 5.1 THX set, and then later to my PM5.1THX sub with RCX-4 and RSX-4s. I have used it from everything to ipod, xbox, xbox360, ps2, dreamcast, vhs, dvd, sdtv, hdtv, cd, sacd. The unit is in decent shape. No major cosmetic flaws; some light scratchs here and there. I had been actively using the optical, coax, and line in ports so they're all functioning just fine. I quickly tested aux1 and aux 2 with an ipod and they worked fine. Included is the ac adapter, remote, manual, and 3 adapter cables. I also have all the orignial packing materials; box, baggies. I even still have the optical port cover, and the plastic film that goes over the LCD display (although my attempts to re-stick it have been unsuccessful so far). My Promedia 5.1 THX set will also be up for sale; it's condition is like-wise to that of the DD-5.1. I believe I purchased it in 2001. The first set had to go back, but the next set has been rock solid for the past 5-6 years.
  11. I checked out the local costco today. They had HK AVR 145 for $279 which seems like a really good price. It's only 40W/channel and 5.1, but it does appear to have some type of ipod dock support. The only other unit they had was a Denon 5.1 HT kit with a DVD player for $499; I think the receiver was 587.
  12. I prefer new, but wouldn't mind buying a refurb from an authorized dealer on ebay. Initially, I wasn't considering video connections since my TV has 3 HDMI v1.3. But I saw the specs on the upcoming Onkyo 605 and might consider rethinking that since it has 1.3a and supports the new "loss less" audio codecs. The MSRP at $499 seems reasonable, so I would say that price point or lower for HDMI 1.3 A/V. But any version lower than that or that supports only pass through, I would just use my TV instead and no sense in paying extra to have those ports on my receiver. For a receiver without the fancy video connections, $300-350 would be my target price point. I would be willing to pay a little extra for any unit with Audessy self calibration, and I'm going to be buying a $75-100 ipod dock for whichever receiver I end up with. Thanks.
  13. I'm setting up a RCX-4 center channel and 4 RSX-4 satellites (L/R front, L/R rear). Haven't picked a sub yet. I'm not much of an audiophile, so looking for suggestions on a good receiver match for this setup; one that isn't overkill for my needs and that will give me the best sounds from my R*SX-4s. Not sure what other manufacturers offer ipod docks, but that feature has drawn me to look at both Denon and Yamaha receivers. The video connections are not important since I'll be connecting everything directly to my TV. The more SPDIF and optical audio connections the better, although realistically, I probably only need 2 of each. The setup will be in a small rectangular living room in a condo. At one end is the sofa, and the other an entertainment stand with center channel, TV, etc. There is about 11 feet of distance between the walls. The sofa is against the wall, and I have speaker stands that flank it on both sides. So the rears are only slightly behind and towards the side of the listener. I have space in either the rear left or front left corners for a sub. I'll be using the setup for TV, DVDs (and eventually BD or HDDVD), audio CDs, ipod, XBOX360, and Windows Media Center streams. Thanks.
  14. I bought these: http://www.cybergiftcenter.com/cgi-bin/ShoppingCart.asp?targetLink=http://www.cybergiftcenter.com/applications/search/index.asp&t=48112.04 Very happy with them. The price is for a pair (I don't think you will have much luck finding individual stands). I went to Best Buy, Tweeter, and a few others and didn't like what they had, and the prices ranges were $50-100 for a pair.
  15. Anyone have recommendations for hiding speaker wires? I've got 2 Monster XP 14 gauge wires running on the floor for 2 feet, then up and around the molding/frame of the sliding deck doors so about 21 feet, and then along the floors for another 4 or 5 feet before it gets hidden by the couch. I'm only interested in covering them up, no use of power tools. I guess I'm familar with the ducts and rails and tubes you can get, but they all look kind of cheap. Was wondering if anyone is using something they are happy with that is both functional and looks nice? Thanks.
