  1. Thanks for the tips! So far I've done the pipe insulation tweak, which was pretty easy. My left channel still needs a proper corner or false corner; its only tight on the one edge touching the rear wall. There is a gap on the other side. I'm still getting nice bass punch, however, and I like the spacious sound of the woofer horn. I still intend to get some Dynamat, but have been too busy to look for an auto sound shop on the other side of town.
  2. Hmm, I was curious about the exact effects of the damping. I recall reading similar things about the old Altec horns. If it's bolted on, it should deaden the ringing. It sounds really good without it, maybe I won't mess with it.
  3. Thanks! Now to find an auto audio shop nearby. I couldn't find rope caulk at the hardware store, only plumber's putty. That can be a pain to apply.
  4. Where can I buy Dynamat? I looked at Lowes for similar material, the closest I found was plumber's putty before I had to head home. Is this different than Moretite? I'm interested in the Crites tweeters, perhaps I'll try a pair at some point when funds are available.
  5. Thanks for the suggestions! What horn did you end up preferring, babadano? I'd like to find something that fits into the Khorn tophat.
  6. Ah, I definitely need to do the foam pipe tweak! I think that and wrapping the horn in the above mentioned material, will be next on my tweaks list. I now understand that my K400 horn is the same size as current production, but made of metal instead. I don't plan to seek out the current 401 version; I think damping mine will surely suffice. I currently own some large 2" format horns and drivers from EV, but my girlfriend prefers the looks of the Klipschorn tophat, not a monstrous ABS horn sitting on top. I'd like to keep these Klipschorns, not Frankensteins ;-). I'd love to plop my big white while EV horns on top, but it ain't happening. I happen to like the Klipschorn sound, even with the older horns. I'm not in a hurry to lose the K77s, although the Crites sound like a good tweeter. I probably already own some variation of his tweeters, made by Foster instead of Eminence. I'm curious about crossover changes.... What's can I do with my AK2? Thanks for the great input!
  7. Thanks for the great info! That Monster cable is looking a little green, now that you mention it. That shouldn't be too hard to swap out. I've had success using plumbers putty on horns before, perhaps I'll have to go pick up a few buckets. Did you use it in tweeters as well as midrange horns? I happen to have a Rane three way crossover that has delay and tweeter horn eq options... I'm not in a huge hurry to bypass the passive crossover, but it would be fun to try eventually. What active crossover points and delays have you guys been using for the stock horns? You're right, there are so many possibilities! 8-)
  8. Midrange is K-55M. Hmm, are K401 and 400 interchangeable? Strange!
  9. Thanks! The Khorns certainly dwarf the mighty Mach Ones! Nope, there are K400 in mine. I pulled them out to clean. Perhaps the last of production? There are certificates that date the cabinets as 1986 models. Are the horn differences audible? Should I wrap the metal horns?
  10. I had to remove the side grills temporarily due to trim on the walls.
  11. Ha! I had to rotate the tops since they're crammed in the living room for now. Bass is limited until I getting those corners fitting tightly. They're sounding very nice with my little 6aq5 console pull amps!
  12. Thanks for the message! I was was under the impression that they're weren't any electrolytic caps in crossover, but I could be wrong. I haven't opened up the bass horn to see what's inside. I keep reading that there are better crossovers, but I'm not sure if I could modify my AK2.
  13. I just recently purchased some 1986 Klipschorns too. What components did you end up preferring in your mods? What should i consider changing and keeping the same on mine? Thanks!
  14. I just picked up a set with K400 horns and AK2 crossovers. I like the sound! Are there any reasonably priced tweaks out there?
