  1. Just on the walls, understood. And not too thick as to decrease the interior volme either.
  2. Okay, did a bit more sesearch. 1950's conventional wisdom was to damp only one of two opposing panels. After the '70s, research indicated that to keep internal midrange reflections off the cone and/or out of the port, damping additional surfaces was critical. So that makes sense that old Altec and Klipsch designs would be done like that. But for loudspeaker designs after that, having damping everywhere is the rule.
  3. I have read that damping should be on all surfaces, the last thing anyone wants is waves reflecting out the port.
  4. That is an excellent and efficient solution. I believe Altec also had an open cell foam surround that was glued around the exterior of their flange. It was visible on the Altec 19, just as the circular foam surround is visible on those JBL LE25 tweeters. So to quell anyones concerns, attach the flangs and put on a foam surround! []
  5. Right, overkill. Reminds me of those Wharfedales that had a dual cabinet filled with sand in between. [] But I do believe some can perceive a sort of resonance with horns due to their material. The guys that build Altec multicelluar clones and other horns out of wood may be onto something.
  6. I read an article about a fellow who was using an Altec 511 horn and he built an enclosure around it that left only the compression driver protruding out of the rear. He then filled the enclosure with sand. He indicated that the ringing was pretty much mitigated.
  7. Hi- I'm a new member here. I'm an audiophile, been posting at AudioKarma. I own Marantz and SAE power amps, Marantz pre amps, Phase Linear and Audio Control EQs. I have a pair of JBL L100s and I'll confess to owning a pair of Cerwin Vega D9s. I play electric bass, so I also post at TalkBass, BillFitzmaurice, and the fEARful forums. Been reading about the Cornscala design for a while. Bob Crites has been very helpful discussing his designs with me. I've been researching the forums a bit and some folks are building them as a separate bass bin and a separate top (with the midrange and tweeter). The M2380 horn and Bob's Klipsch style CT-125 tweeter would make for some interesting designs as a top. I've seen many creative designs searching the web, I've even seen pics of modified Cornscala designs with the JBL 'Baby Butt Cheeks' tweeter horn. Bob has a new two-way Cornscala Style D using a Faital Pro HF 140 compression driver with a Tractrix horn, so two-way designs are possible. Has anyone tried a mid/hi with the Altec 511 horn? The 511 can be used with a driver crossed at 500. The Altec 19 used the smaller 811 horn, but that horn is only recommended to be crossed as low as 800. I've read that although those old Altec horns look really cool, they can sound ringy or harsh if not encased in sand or something. Any help would be most appreciated. -John
