  1. FedEx did fine with my Peach. It arrived Wednesday and IMHO the blonde wood looks great (You say tomayto, I say tomahto). While waiting for my new amp, I will be trying it out with an Audio Research Classic 60 later this weekend. Josh definitely took it up the wazoo from FedEx. Remember their old company slogan? "When it absolutely, positively has to be there..." I say Bull Schnizzle!

  2. Did you read the item description for the K-Horns?

"This all comes out of my estate get it direct from my estate before I die and before all the scavengers get it and re-sell and bang and mark up our collectables just to make a buck."

    Yikes, kinda creepy.

  3. Replacing the binding posts is very easy. There are dozens of different styles and manufacturers to choose from. The set listed below is similar to what I replaced the originals with on my Cornwalls. I bought them at www.diycable.com. Just make sure you get some with the longer screws.

  4. I have almost all of them. The sound is excellent. Honestly, these records helped me realize that I was sometimes buying vinyl and sacd's for the sound quality and not necessarily because I like the music. Some of them I listen to quite often, and a few have been played only once. One of the very cool aspects of their albums is that most of the sessions are recorded simultaneously using DSD (digital) and traditional analog formats. Can we NOT have a flame war about DSD vs PCM? Please?

    Good Luck,

  5. In my amp (Cary 300SEI) the WE's sounded best by far. I tried Sovtec, EH and a pair that were branded "Jolida". It was no contest. Bear in mind that was about a year ago and I never tried any of the meshies. There's quite a bit of discussion on this matter over on the Audio Asylum. Many posters are having great results with some of the newer 300B's.

  6. PP or SET....

I've had both and believe the source material, speakers and room acoustics have more due to with the final sound than either architecture has. Provided the circuit designs are executed well, it's kinda like Blonde or Brunette.

PS In the big picture, I don't even think it's as important as sock selection. Maybe it's closer to fold or wad?

16 gauge!!! you must be a hack! ! I wouldnt put 16G in my dogs frame! If you are truly wanting to feeel the magic of the shot you need to use 17 gauge. I use 17 gauge and must admit that I break a string every time I play but that's to be expected if you want to play with any authority. I would recommend that you try the 17 gauge but try not hitting the ball too hard youll love the feel of the touch shots around the net!

Hetch Hetchy was more John Muir's fight than Ansel Adams favorite. I sure wish the powers that be could of come up with a better place to build a damn dam. Yosemite Valley is one of those places you really have to see to believe. I'm guessing the Hetch Hetchy Valley was also.

    Tony,

TENNIS! Now you're talking! I also try and play at least 2-3 times a week. Bought another racquet last week (Volkl "Classic V1"). In fact, I'm going to to the Mercedes Cup (men's tour) here in Los Angeles next week, and then it's off to see Maria Sharpova play for the Southern California World Team Tennis "Newport Beach Breakers".

Hey, I got an idea! We can argue about racquet string! I use Babolat VS Natural ThermoGut Touch 16 gauge, strung at 62 lbs. Anyone that uses synthetic string is a LOSER and probably listens to push-pull.

That was my first thought Craig, but I seem to have a problem finding models that match my requirement. Sony's website lists both a c555es and a c222es, but both seem to be out of production for some time. There are several mega CD juke boxes in the ES line, but that overkill is not in my plans.

Do you know if Sony has an ES model that would fit my specs? That is the reason for the Sony fallback to a DVD/SACD player.

    ----------------

I bought a c222es at Magnolia Audio Video in Santa Monica about 6 months ago. It was being discontinued but Sony does have a 5 year warranty (parts AND labor) on the es line. Crutchfield's website is offering a DVP-NC555ES player/changer for $599.99. I'm guessing this is the new version of the SCD-C222ES with added DVD playback (DVD video only, NOT DVD-A).

I like the sound of almost all the SACD's I've bought so much that if something new comes out in both SACD and vinyl, I'll get the SACD. It's about as close to vinyl as I've heard and without the hassle. Lastly, both Audiogon and eBay often have listings for 222's, 333's and 555's at good prices.

    Good Luck,

    Chris

  11. I seem to remember a pair of those in near mint shape going for somewhere around $7,000 (may have been more) on eBay a couple of years ago. I may have my taste up my wazoo, but I think they look kinda cool. Supposedly they use some Klipsch patents.

Does this really make a big difference?

DSD, that is. I read a review saying it was great.

If so I will have to pick up a dsd sacd title and try it out.

    -justin

    ----------------

You might try taking a peek at www.audioasylum.com. Once there, go to the Digital - SACD forum. There are some very well versed participants that come down on both sides of the DSD debate. Some say it's a great thing, others believe it's a sham created by Sony and Phillips for purposes other than audio quality. Most of the SACD's I own sound great whether or not they are DSD. Overall they get to about 90% of the sound quality I get from good vinyl. Then again some sound like doo-doo. A close friend of mine who is an executive at UMG described the the current format situation as "...we'll (UMG) take as many bites of the apple as we can get...". Or, you might say, just how many times will these audio nuts buy the same recording?

Another point of view was that discussed on the Audio Asylum... "Like the old saying in Washington, D.C. says, "Follow the money." The very real possibility of a format "war" seems to be driven by two forces - the DVD group wanting to wrest away the CD hardware and software royalty stream that Sony and Philips have enjoyed for the last decade-and-a-half, and Sony/Philips equally anxious to maintain it, although spokespersons for Sony deny that this is the motivating factor behind DSD."

    Chris

PS While the Sony C333ES is certainly a nice player, there are more than a few reports of problems with them.

    Professor,

Whatever you do, do not get a Zen tube amp. One-watt amps are useless for reproducing music.

    ----------------

Sorry Paul, at the risk of arousing your vitriol, gotta disagree here. In all honesty, the sound reproduced by my Zen amp was as good or better than just about anything I've heard or had since (Cary, Scott, Fisher, McIntosh and various other tubed gear). However, it was underpowered. My room at the time was about 20'x30' with a 12' ceiling. The Zen definitely ran out of steam at levels over moderately loud. But, up until then it was very nice indeed.

  14. Just last night we were listening to "This One's For Blanton" on vinyl. One of my favorite records. You might like "Very Tall" with Oscar Peterson and Milt Jackson. Ray Brown's "appears on" listing at allmusic.com is absolutely amazing. Go to www.allmusic.com, type "Ray Brown" in the search field, click the first listing, scroll down to "appears on" and select "click here for more" and wait while it loads....

Hopefully the Jazz Sensei (Allan Songer) will chime in here with his usual, very valuable picks. Ray Brown was a MONSTER presence in American jazz. Not to mention a valuable mentor to many, many players. I saw one of his last student/proteges a couple of weeks ago. Kristin Korb is a very talented singer/player and can be heard often in and around Southern California.

The more and more I think about it, the more I want to get a tube amp for my Cornwalls. The problem is, being a college student I can't exactly jump for a high end Mcintosh because the cash flow isn't quite up to that level yet. Is there any type of at least decent tube amp that would run around $200-$300 on the used market? Or any other suggestions you guys may have? I apologise, but I know nothing about tubes at this point. Thanks.

    ----------------

My first tube amp was a Decware Zen. Not the most powerful amp around, but if you're room is on the small side it would give you a great intro into tubes. You can sometimes find one for about $300 on Audiogon. Not to mention you could easily sell it for what you paid. IF not for the lack of power in my rather large room, I'd still have one or two of the little buggers.

  16. Always been one of my pet peeves too. While I'm not a piano player, my kids are and we have a 60" Kawaii Professional in the living room. I love the sound that comes out of that beast. Very few recordings I have (vinyl, sacd or cd) even come close. My hero...er uh...friend, Dr Bruce Edgar, pretty much told me the same thing written in the post above after I'd asked him, more or less, the same question you pose. Dr. B said piano sound is very difficult to record properly because of it's extremely percussive nature among other things. Not to mention the Jazz Sensei (Allan Songer) once remarked that even the great Rudy Van Gelder (of Blue Note records fame) had a hard time recording piano accurately.

Maybe Joshnich will chime in on this one. He has a piano with a deck the size of an aircraft carrier in his living room, and plays it beautifully. I believe it's a German made Schmeckle, Schmeister or something like that.

  17. Allan

I am soooooo upset. I've been volunteered to help chaparone a 10 year old birthday party at the Dodger game Sunday. No way out of it, not to mention I HATE the Doghairs (still love my Giants). Are you going to any of the other events at the festival?

Also, if Allan hasn't already answered, it will not sell out. As of Wednesday, there were tons of tickets left.

    Crying,

    Chris

PS There is a small up-side to my grief. I've insisted on a stop at Phillipe's on the way to the stadium or I wouldn't go!

  18. While we're on the subject of Rockasaurus...

Derek & the Dominos - "In Concert"

    Grateful Dead - "Europe '72"

Big Brother & the Holding Company - "Cheap Thrills"

Allman Brothers Band - "At Fillmore East"

    The Beatles - "1"

Steve Miller - "Brave New World" or "Fly Like An Eagle"

Led Zeppelin - "I", "II", "III", "IV", "Houses Of The Holy", "Physical Grafitti"

    Jeff Beck - "Truth"

Jimi Hendrix - "Jimi Plays Monterey"

whew!...thanks for the reminder...been listening to mostly jazz and country lately...gotta catch up on some of this over the long weekend.

    Chris

  19. Gotta agree with Gary on this one. Sorry other guy. Saw them for the first time in '72 and then about 10 times after that (last one about '86). I thought they got better with age. Maybe it was me. Europe '72 is my personal favorite album. But listening to recordings of the Dead is about 10% as much fun as being there imho. Lastly, as far as "chicks" are concerned, I always thought Maria Muldaur was/is a great singer. With or without the Dead.

    Chris

Gary, still listening to the tape you sent me. Thanks, I owe you.
