  1. ARCO sent me a link about Simon Yorke's views on the future of audio, which I thought I share with you. Read it, is very nice!
  2. I give you below an interesting paper, Aristidis has attached in the A.C.A. Forum (I am copying it down since it is not allowed to attach .DOC files in these Forums) An Engineer's View of Santa... No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer, which only Santa has ever seen. There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each. Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household, a total trip of 71.604 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding etc. This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour. The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal amount; we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. 353,000 tons travelling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy per second each. In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force. In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's been vaporized by now. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
  3. As it is snowing today, I think this is very appropriate... Great picture! and great sound I presume...
  4. Hi, I suppose you have many Holiday obligations to meet, so I will not bother you with many links this time... Click our Monthly Newsletter, A.C.A. mail list subscribers receive in their e-mail boxes. From there, you may navigate around our month's latest entries. I wish you all, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2003.
  5. The Greek 2002 High End Show has taken place (as every year) from 22 to 24 November 2002 in Park Hotel - Athens. The Audiophile Club of Athens Review Team has entered their Report in the Club's web-site. (High End Events section, see Shows Directory at: http://aca.gr/event.htm) Click http://aca.gr/event02-4.htm to find out what happened during the last Show. ____________________________________________ Unfortunately, this is the only official report available, as strangely enough, any other on-line audio site or E-Zine has not covered Greek Shows until now. Enjoy
  6. I feel very strong about this Forum not being the proper place to talk about A.C.A. ethics and procedures and gossip and such, so I have to admit, I thought very much to intervene in this particular topic which has nothing to do with the Forum contents and which is of no interest to its users. But I decided to do so in order to clear up the situation. It is always sad when the Club looses one of its members anyway ... Max, I suggest to you a little honesty, mainly to yourself ... If somebody looks at your Stereo photo album, he will think that this white turntable down there belongs to you. I can tell you I do not have so many pictures of it myself. I mention that because you are implying that you are not interested in funcy equipment but only in music! And I have to state that during your presence in the Club, you were the fastest upgrading fellow among all Members. (Competing with only one other member I think...) And here, in this Klipsch Forum, if you look at your posts, 80% of them are dealing with thoughts of: t/t upgrading or not upgrading, cartridge changing or not changing, swifting from Heresys, or going to Sansuis or going back to Heresys or keeping them all, puting on or taking off the covers, and so on and so forth... Max, do you recall when you joined the Club and heard my system for the first time, you asked me what equipment to change, did I reply to you: "... Putting your t/t on a proper place and play a little bit with your cables will be sufficient..." Didn't I? I certainly do enjoy music!, although I do not have the time I used to have, with 3 kids plus my job, plus running the Club, plus updating the web site, plus sleeping sometimes ... By the way do you remember the lovely baby-girl picture popping out of your Profile Page for a month when she was born - I hope she is fine? The posts in the Club's Forum that you are referring above in reply to ARCO (you shouldn't), have not been deleted by themselves. I did delete them, as I have the right to do so (and the obligation), as ARCO does as well, been a moderator and who fully supports this action when situation gets out of hand. But that doesn't mean that I regret even for a second of what it was written or the way it was written by me in these pages. (They were not referring to you, remember...) And I have kept them all in my files. Max, leave the time to cure some wounds and review again the situation when you will be more relaxed. As for your re-joining, this is not quite automatique as you probably imagine ...
  7. Very well put DEANG but still, they were times with complete silence believe it or not, especially during the Classical Program from vinyl (after the dinner...) during the late hours. And although some times I was getting nervous with some talking (I did a lot of preparations to avoid that...) my overall impression for the results was very satisfactory.
  8. Dear friends, A week ago, I had the honor and the pleasure of hosting the monthly A.C.A. meeting at my humbled place. That was a special evening for me since a lot of people (32 to be exact) turned out which created extraordinary conditions for my Genesis/Rowland/Gabriel system, performing in a listening room with very large volume, crowded with people and an unavoidable high background noise. Several aspects of this meeting as far as preparations from my part, music listening program, listening comments from the Club's reviewing team and some technicalities written by me, are included in a page at http://aca.gr/meet02-7.htm. I think you will find many things interesting there. Cheers

  16. quote: This said the speakers let the musicians and conductors and recordings give the colors, not adding or substracting some more. This way you can really get into the recording.Music is all about colors, let the music pass thru, and not the speaker sound interfere. That's exactly what I meant. But then, teenagers (and some older ones...) want to have excessive colour in their live, well... May be I was there too some 30 years ago but we all come this way after we mature eventually. This message has been edited by skaloumbakas on 08-31-2002 at 04:26 AM

  18. I think we all agree by disagreeing... We are not talking absolute terms here but we are dealing with everybody's preferences TAWARDS neutrality or colourless. Who disagrees in this post that our goal is to make our system disappear when it plays, sorry, reproduces musical events, (especially music recorded live). Systems are a bunch of transistors, valves, wires, cones, membranes, horns etc. most of them ugly looking, which our wives wish them to disappear physically and we want them to disappear mentally (acoustically) and leave in their place musical instruments, Choruses, Female voices etc. Systems are not musical instruments but signal reproducers and the more accurate they are the better. Systems cannot be described as musical or euphonic. Musical instruments can be described as such. I agree that in a Studio you have no idea how the real think was produced (I don't care anyway...) but live recordings are more realistic in getting the feeling. There you have, people from the audience breathing, coughing and clapping their hands, and the full Orchestra with so many levels of depth and height and width. The more neutral your system is (I never said there is total absence of flavour in any system - room combination) the more you have the feeling of being there, especially if you are a frequent concert goer. If somebody is fallen in love with his Hi-Fi, he is seriously mistaken. _______________________________________________________ quote: I wasnt aware of God's active role in the music industry - is he in production or post production. Max, I will propose to you to post in Greek and I am sure I will find to your text many misspellings or bad syntaxes. I suppose you realized what I was meaning with my phrase which is: "Recording engineers will be very happy with this discovery because they'll have to do nothing, for Gods shake!" Is it clear now Max?
  19. ...If the flavoring is euphonic - as in merely softens, sweetens or otherwise improves the sound in the individual listener's ears then this is not boring...QUOTE] Max, do you think there is a system in the whole world that improves every recording? God, recording engineers will be very happy with this descovery cause they'll have to do nothing... Hi-End systems should make you distinct different versions of the same Symphony for example, and give you the ability to decide about good or bad recordings, good or bad orchestrations, different flavors of Pianos or violins etc. This is what is all about. Flavors of the music and not flavors of your system. This message has been edited by skaloumbakas on 08-30-2002 at 07:32 AM
  20. quote: ...if they all sounded 'neutral', without different accents or emphasis... it'd be rather boring now wouldn't it?... JasN00b you are completely wrong. Colored is a system, which has its own flavor, always present in different recordings, always putting an emphasis in this or that (that's what color is all about...). SO, THIS IS BORING!!! Neutral is a system which is disappearing (so to speak) and leaves the colors of the recording (different from one another) to be heard and felt AND KEEPS YOU LOOKING FOR DIFFERENT RECORDINGS (and not for new wires or valves or...). That's why colored systems, although you like them for some time (because this is your favorite color), after a while you get used to it, they get boring and ... this is why we try to change this and that and after sometimes again we want to change this and that and on and on in the never ending quest for better (I would say different) kind of sound. We are doing this because the combination of system and room to be able to produce a neutral acoustical result is almost impossible. So, we always have some kind of color in the music output, created by either our speakers, or the room, or the source or, in a lesser degree, from our amplification and the wiring. I would say this as my definition: Colored is a system, which you would recognize with a blind test. Neutral is a system that is difficult to identify but you realize all right the feeling and the atmosphere of the recording and the recording environment. In my opinion, this is what we should keep looking for... not one color associated and always present with our system but many colors, emotions and feelings associated with out beloved records... _____________________ Christos Skaloumbakas My System: http://aca.gr/pop_skal.htm This message has been edited by skaloumbakas on 08-30-2002 at 05:31 AM
  21. I agree with EAR about neutrality. All speaker manufacturers in the world (at least the most respected ones...) try to design speakers as flat as possible or, in other words, try to make them as neutral as possible. Neutrality is a subjective term and the outcome is neutral as well, if your listening room is right, and your speaker positioning is right(according to 3 - 4 models they are around like Cardas, WASP, Audio Physics etc.). Coloration is an objective tierm, which means some people like this way some people like that way. If you are extremely lucky, you can get a neutral result (flat result that is...) if your listening room is not perfect but PROPER for this kind (colored that is...) of speaker. So, I guess, everybody in this post is right because everybody is listening in his own environment and with his own ears... I am just saying that it is most probable that having a very good recording, neutral speakers will sound better in more rooms than colored ones, whatever colored means anyway...
