  1. think you will find the CF3/4 not as efficient as the factory numbers suggest in that they really do like and respond to a lot more power than small SET will provide. Search the archive for owner response and find comments. Look at the band and the size and ask yourself if 10 watts will get you where you want to go. These are nor Khorns. Best regards Moray James.

    Moray,

I do not understand what you mean by "band and the size". I have also heard the CF3 is a bit less efficient stated.

  2. Shiva,

That's interesting, I would never had guessed too much bass. I was thinking lack of bass control being the CF 3's have two 10" woofers. The reason I asked about the impedance was my concern for bad effects or stressing the amp etc, with the impedance dropping low.

You said that the 'impedance can dip to 2.8 at times', did this info come from Klipsch? I am not questioning your info, it's just that I have searched for a impedance graph and asked on another site and am unable to find specific data. Any other info would be much appreciated.

    Thanks Bob

  3. I know this speaker is rated for nominal 8 ohms, but I would like to know how low could the impedance drop under normal conditions? I am thinking of using them with a SET amp such as Decware or Coincident that use EL84's in the triode mode.

    Thanks Bob

  4. This may be a dumb question but here goes. I have been thinking about buy something from the Heritage line(used) La Scala or KHorn and also a vintage tube amp Fischer, Scott or Sherwood.

The speaker terminal connections on these that I have seen use pan head screws (fairly small). I currently use a modestly priced set of cables with bananas. Is there a way to convert the terminals, I've seen some rebuilds where they mod the chassis and add binding posts. Is this is what is needed or is there some kind of adapter?

I like all of your comments. If someone asked me the same I would say, "Lets spend a day or two, and go to some local shops and listen to gear together and talk about gear". If he is serious about spending that kind of money he really needs to listen. That's my feeling because I really like interacting and talking with people.

Bob-I did recommend that he become familiar with what's out there and make an effort to audition gear.   I invited him to see the MA6600 I've got here too.  I'm using them with a pair of Large Advents (in Walnut veneer) that my wife picked up in a yard-sale that I refurbished (I'm currently in a state of audiophile rebellion).

At least he can see the amp.

    John,

That's great that you have taken the time to help him make an informed decision. Although I probably don't know as much as some here, I none the less enjoy talking and learning. I think when we share it makes things more enjoyable.

Audeze had approximately $250,000 of headphones stolen last night--read below for details. Let's keep our eyes peeled for suspicious LCD-2, LCD-3, LCD-X and LCD-XC deals out there.

    Audeze
Last night, Februrary 28th, there was a break-in and robbery at Audeze. About $250,000 of headphones were stolen. We're a relatively small company and this is a real blow. Audeze asks everyone to let us know if offered LCD headphones at a deal that’s too good to be true. You should be highly suspicious if anyone other than an Authorized Audeze dealer offers you our headphones for sale at a reduced price. We don't allow our dealers to sell via Amazon, eBay, Craigslist etc., so deals on these sites should be carefully researched before purchase. You should also be very concerned if their headphones do not have a serial number, or the seller refuses to give you the serial number before purchase. All Audeze headphones have a serial number on the inside of the adjusting block. We'll soon publish a list of all stolen products’ serial numbers. In addition, Audeze is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves. If you have any information or questions, please write to: support@audeze.com. While it does not appear any EL-8s were stolen (they were in a different area of our warehouse), due to the police investigation and general disruption, you should expect a few days’ delay in EL-8 shipments.
    Thanks, The Audeze Team

  8. Any thoughts on my statement about the CF's not being tube friendly. I got this from past experience and also years ago I talked to a Klipsch tech support about impedance variances with them, they more or less said they can dip. I would love if someone proved me wrong on this.

I like tubes but hesitate to go tube power amp and not match up well. I think it is mainly the woofers that may be the issue.

As far as the bi-amp in need to do more reading, so I do it right

    Thanks very much

  9. It is a George Wright It has switchable 12 or 20 db gain, it was just too much, I think it was not a good match with the Yamaha. Personally I like tubes but from what I have discovered the CF-3's are not tube friendly.

By the way, I had George Wright pre and main amps running Spendors and it sounded good except for slightly bass shy. The Yamaha and Klipsch had been with my daughter and she did not have room for them and I brought them back. I was not going to part with the Wright but got a decent price.

  10. mdeneen,

What about the Rogue Sphinx integrated which I believe uses tubes for the pre and then solid state. I had a tube pre and main amp seperates, I sold the main and tried the tube pre with the main of the Yamaha but there was too much gain from the pre amp. I briefly tried the cf-3s with all tube but something sounded off(I think maybe impedance fluctuations with the cf3s?), it was good with the Yamaha and pre tube but too much gain.

    Thanks for the opinion, Bob

  11. I guess for now I will explore a tube pre amp for my Yamaha and not bi amp. I had a tube pre but it had too much gain 12db, I did not have as much usable area on the volume control as I would have liked. I will most likely look for a hybrid integrated.

    Thanks

  12. Your power amps need to have a gain control (volume control) in order to match them.

Thanks I was wondering about that. So I think I will try to get a tube pre amp that will work with my Yamaha or find a hybrid integrated.

  13. I would like info on how to bi amp.

    My speakers are CF-3's

My amp is a Yamaha AX-570 integrated which I can separate the main from the pre

I would like to possibly use solid state for the woofers and tube for the horn.

I need to buy the pre amp and the tube power amp.

I will probably get a tube pre amp, so does it need to have two outputs or is it ok to use  splitter?

How do you keep size the amps correctly so the woofers don't overwhelm the horns and so on?

  14. i have read that the CF3's and 4's can dip below 3 ohms and though efficient, can be demanding on an amplifier.  You want a amp that can handle the dips and not strain.

I called a Klipsch tech support about this a few years back and he told me the impedance can dip, I think the best amp would be solid state as sometimes tubes like a fairly flat or even impedance range.
