Just bought a buttload at the store which has school supplies on sale.  Ticonderoga #2, the best.  There is at least one trivia question in this post.

Is the question, "Which pencils, once proudly made so well in the USA are no longer made in the USA but in Mexico?" Oh no, I guess that'd be an answer. USA Golds all the way, baby!

  2. Tomatoes are one of my favorite parts of summer! I only recently started perusing the local farmer's market...got some of those purple beans that turn green when you steam them, some yellow squash, a couple of mild purple peppers, and of course, as many fresh tomatoes as I could afford and my stomach could handle; I didn't eat much else that week.

Aaand I crocheted myself a "French market" style bag to take next time. Only problem is, it's super stretchy...[emoji857][emoji383][emoji765]

Got a beautiful "heirloom" tomato this weekend at the farmers market. Took out the core, drained it, then combined with toasted pine nuts, maitake mushrooms, sauteed spinach, , roasted garlic,  ricotta cheese, fresh parmesan reggiano, basil, salt and pepper.    Baked on my grill for 30 minutes or so....wow.  No pictures, it's history.

  3. It's been a long time, hope you are good. I never knew or asked how did you get the name mangofirst, there was a thread years ago where everyone explained their names ?
    I'm good. [emoji4][emoji106]
Fun! Well, at my summer job after my freshman year of college - staff member at a church camp but don't get any ideas, it was still Meatballs level - we would get much of our food from a food bank. Out of date or close to out of date stuff, you know. One day, the boss brings in a case of mangoes. I had never had them and they were perfectly ripe. So I tried one. Then I ate them all over the course of the next two days...it became a thing and the kitchen staff teased me, calling me Mango.
This was before it was a given for people to have internet at their homes, and I only had my school email address. The head of the kitchen tells me I should get a private email account. I had no idea how so he set it up for me because the camp office had internet: mango_111@hotmail.com (the 111 was my dorm room number). I lost the address years ago.
Flash forward a few years and I joined a forum after an irl friend turned me on to an irc chatroom for said forum. When I wanted the username mango for irc it was taken, so in my pouting about it, I came up with mangofirst because I was mango first...this also ties in to the fact that I was mango before the popularity of the Chris Kattan SNL character if the same name. 🤷‍♀️
So that's my username story. Thanks for asking.

  4. I prefer gas because I am so much better at gauging the heat by looking at the flame than the little dial marks. Also, I think it distributes the heat more evenly and consistently on the stove top and in the oven. Only time I prefer electric is for broiling or toasting but that may have just been because I had a cheap gas oven...for some reason I don't recall there being a heating element on top. Not sure if that's a standard thing or correct at all.

  6. So I guess that you have not done a blind and deaf A/B/C/D/E test. Please do not comment unless you have imperical evidence that disputes what I hear and see. I f you ar einterested I can sale you a complete set BUT the price will be 150% of MSRP due to the fact that I personally burn them in for 1000 hours (disclaimer this is compressed to 1.3 hrs using a method which is currently undergoing patent aanalysis so it can not be released to the public). Take MY word that it helps a lot.

    Goodnight and goodbye Dave

  7. I wonder how many selves she has. Well I completely misinterpreted it, I thought that it was the inner "selves" of the Hunger Games character, not her as the artist.

Interesting choice of words she uses, like "triggered" which, to me, is a word victim's counselors sometimes use, suggesting maybe something else was on her mind. How do you try and create "emotional content" without "upsetting" anyone? Are not those two concepts inextricably intertwined?

I like your explanation better and the second time I watched it, a student had told me that it was on the HG soundtrack so I definitely had those themes in mind.

There are many more emotions than upset, so no, I don't think the two must be intertwined. Emotional content could cause one to feel empowered, free, overjoyed...

In other news, I was driving through downtown Hope today and rubbernecked as I passed the depot where sits a "reserved for Paul Klipsch" sign. :-) Probably driven past there 50 times and never noticed.

  8. What controversy?

it was perceived as promoting pedophilia.

    What controversy?

it was perceived as promoting pedophilia.

So it obviously is the second video. Well I guess there is that aspect of It, but that didn't jump to mind for me. I think she wants to lock the hunter side of herself in the cage, and be free to be a girl ouside of it.

I wonder what Sia said about it. If it was about pedophilia, I can bet for sure that it was to bring awareness, not promote it. Interesting that people would jump to that interpretation. Madonna, broke the ground for this generation, Sia may be taking a page out of her book.

Sia has said that they represent her different inner selves:

  9. Okay, so I watched this video last night and really loved it. Had heard the song but knew nothing about the artist or the dancer.

Then I watched the second in a trilogy and thought it was great as well, but apparently people got all fired up about it. I honestly don't see why. I think both videos are strangely beautiful. Thoughts?

**edit** this post made me a forum veteran

  10. Country music is about someone losing their man/woman, job, horse, dog, etc.

Folk music is about social change.

Now Western music, still trying to figure that out.

I can't think of many Jewel songs about social change and she was categorized as folk...that's my only problem with music: putting it into genres. Let's just go with good, bad, or somewhere in between.

  11. Must be a different 'Jewel'.

Isn't that like saying it must be a different Madonna? :)Yee haw, just do what you've always done but add a fiddle, boots, hats, maybe a mandolin and steel guitar, and boom, you're on the country radio station making bucks. These things have a very simple formula.

Folk and country are pretty darn similar...not sure what the difference is, really. Jewel already had the yodel in her voice and I think that fits right in.

As for Steven Tyler's jump, the music is lovely so kudos to the session players there, but that voice just does not translate over for me. I <3 Aerosmith too much I guess.

  12. John and Mitchy were gettin' kind of itchy

Just to leave the folk music behind

Zol and Denny workin' for a penny

Tryin' to get a fish on the line

In a coffee house Sebastian sat

And after every number they'd pass the hat

McGuinn and McGuire just a-gettin' higher

In L.A., you know where that's at

And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass

Zolly said "Denny, you know there aren't many"

"Who can sing a song the way that you do, let's go south"

Denny said "Zolly, golly, don't you think that I wish"

"I could play guitar like you"

Zol, Denny and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl)

And after every number they'd pass the hat

McGuinn and McGuire still a-gettin higher

In L.A., you know where that's at

And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass

When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore

But she changed her mind one day

Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike

"Take me to New York right away"

When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps

Called John and Zol and that was the Mugwumps

McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher

But that's what they were aimin' at

And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass

Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps

Don't you work as hard as you play

Make up, break up, everything is shake up

Guess it had to be that way

Sebastian and Zol formed the Spoonful

Michelle, John, and Denny gettin' very tuneful

McGuinn and McGuire just a-catchin' fire

In L.A., you know where that's at

And everybody's gettin' fat except Mama Cass

    Di-di-di-dit dit dit di-di-di-dit, who-o-oa

    ------ flute ------

Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted

And Mitchy wants to go to the sea

Cass can't make it, she says we'll have to fake it

    We knew she'd come eventually

    Greasin' on American Express cards

It's low rent, but keeping out the heat's hard

Duffy's good vibrations and our imaginations

    Can't go on indefinitely

And California dreamin' is becomin' a reality

  13. Haha ;) donuts? from germany? You don´t want to eat them... ;)

    I'll take a strudel then.

<bunny trail>First time I had strudel, from a little grocery/bakery in a small Texas German town, I ate the whole thing all by myself. It was cream cheese and weighed about 5 pounds. </bunny trail>
