  1. I toe in my RF-3's toward my listening position, and like to overall imporivement in imaging. Not huge, but noticable.

As far as vintage equipment, I still have an old Rotel RX-803 receiver that is still kicking. It is rated at 75 wpc, but how many 75 wpc receivers do you know of that have heat sink fins across the back?? It has pr-out/in jacks, and when I was a part time mobile disk jockey during my high-school and college days, I used to plug a mixer into the input jacks and use it as a back up amplifier in smaller halls. It kicks *** for 5 - 6 hours at 3/4 volume!! Swear to God that this thing will never die!

  2. I'm not sure that your response is correct Boa. I've seen a few of mass market receivers lately (Technics comes to mind) that advertise that their product, for example, has an output of 100 watts at 6 ohms. This, to me, is a somewhat deceptive practice, since home stereo system manufacturers have been publishing amplifier power output ratings based on an 8 ohm load since the 1970's. Deceptive, since most consumers will simply see the "100 watts", and ignore the load number. 100 watts at 6 ohms likely means that the receivers amp section has a lower output at 8 ohms.

  3. This is only one person's opinion: keep shopping. The reason the power rating goes down on multi-channel on the AVR 120 is that the power supply is insufficient for multi-channel music/movies. Klipsch speakers are efficient, but benefit immensely from clean power.

If you're looking for a well-built receiver with clean power, I'm partial to Marantz. Marantz receivers and amps have a warm sound that mates well with Klipsch speakers, in my opinion. Thats not to say that there aren't other excellent products out there.

Check these out on Ebay. If you're careful on Ebay you can find some reasonably good deals on used/demo equipment, some with manufacturers warantees still in effect. You might be able to buy more for your dollar this way, and get something you'll be happy with for a long time.

  4. I'm an owner of the RF-3's paired with and RC-3 center and Rb-5 rears. I love it, though am looking to move the RB-5's to another system and drop in the RS-3 surrounds in back.

This is a great setup, paired with a Marantz Sr-19EX receiver and MM-9000 amp. Crystal clear on 2 channel and all kinds of fun watching DVD's. The RC-3 seems the perfect mate for the RF-3's in my system. I reccommend it highly.

  5. On a relatively limited budget, I beleive I've started to build a respectable stereo/HT system. At the core is the Marantz Sr-19EX receiver. I recently added a Marantz MM-9000 Amp, connected to the pre-outs of the receiver, and am now getting much better bass response from the RF-3's. Other components include a NAD 555 DVD/CD player, and an Adcom 5 disk CD player. I have an RC-5 center and RB-5's for the rears (got a good deal on these used).

My question is as follows: I have the RF-3's biwired to the MM-9000 using Kimber 4VS speaker cable. The speaker cable are connected to the amp with bare wire. The amp is conneced to the receiver via Monster M1000i cables.

    - Any audible advantage to using bananas versus bare wire?

    - Any audible advantage to upgrading the internal wiring of the RF-3's (i.e the RF-3II's)?

    - Any tweaks for the RF-3 that have any positive audible impact?

Don't get me wrong, I am in love with the sound of the RF-3's now. I see many references to "tweaks" on this board, and wonder if any that are appropriate for the model(s) that I own would have any positive audible impact.

    Thanks!

  6. Just bought a pair of floor model RF-3's about a week ago (wanted the price break and have them already broken in). Had the chance to compare them to the RF-5's in the showroom. While I did notice that the RF-5's had a warmer, smoother sound, the RF-3's matched my listening room accoustics better. My room tends to suck the sound out of most other speaker brands that I've tried, and burries the sound somewhere in the room where I can't find it. The RF-3's are much more revealing in my room, and much more pleasant to listen to than any other speaker I've tried.

All that said, spensing less on the RF-3's definately meant "more" in my specific case. Your milage may vary. I love the 3's, and reccommend them to anyone who wants an excellent performing speaker at a reasonable price.
