    Greetings,

I am helping to restore a pair of 1950s Klipschorns (one is 1956, the other 1957).

Firstly, both tweeters have issues.  One tweeter is a University 4401 mounted in front of a K5J horn; the voice coil is open.  The network is a "Klipsch Balancing Network 500-5000".  Important question: Is this 4401 a 16 ohm tweeter?

The second tweeter is in a 1956 Khorn, but has a factory K77 with a chrome horn, gray magnet, and Klipsch logo. It sits on top of a K400/K55.  (I am speculating the previous owner bought some "upgrade parts" from Klipsch to replace the original K5J/4401 horns that would normally be found in a 1956 Khorn, probably sometime in the early 1960s.)  The K77 voice coil gives 50+ ohms of resistance.  I know K77s are generally 8 ohms, but did they ever use 16 ohms versions?  BTW, I plan on using the stock crossovers and just replacing the old, oil caps with the original values.

Secondly, one woofer is a K33-J, and other is a Stephens Trusonic 103LX2.  Both voice coils are open.  Question:  Where is the best place to recone them?   Or, is it time to punt and put a modern pair of K33s inside.  Note: Both Khorns have the 6" x 13" slot; the 6" x 13" slots will remain regardless.

    Best,

I just purchased a pair of Khorns from ebay -- one is 1954 and the other 1957. They have the Trusonic 103 LX2s in them and they are beasts. The mid and tweeter are from University.  I would like  to replace these but don't want to part with the Trusonics any time soon.  I have a pair of K 33 Ps with the square magnets (from what year I do not know) and have them in the bass bins presently  as the 103s are being serviced (some excellent people in Southern California)   but prefer the Trusonics.  The Klipsch people recommended keeping the crossovers stock but for replacing the caps.  They mentioned as old as they are, Paul Klipsch probably hand wound the crossover coils.  But they are designed to work with 16 ohm mids and tweeters and am not sure what I can or should update the mids/tweeters and still keep the crossovers.   Sounds like another call to Klipsch might be good, but if anyone has some helpful information it would be appreciated.  Kind regards, Dan

  2. I want to commend Soniphase for providing a wonderful enclosure for the K 33s.  It's called the SL-6, and for buying their tractrix horns (for the mid/high range driver) I was able to purchase plans for the enclosure for 200.00 and build them.   Kevin  Bartlett of Soniphase was most helpful with building tips and the results are brilliant, as they say across the pond.  I have previously built a Jamboree and K-horn but the K33s shine far better in the SL-6 enclosures.   For a real treat, I highly recommend providing a home  for your K33s either by buying the enclosure or the plans for building them.  I'm glad I made the investment and had the time to build them.    I am also told they work well with the EVX 155, but these are hard to find.

  3. I was able to obtain some plans for the original Jamboree bass bin from Soniphase (the design about 5-6 iterations ago) and took a few months to build it.  I originally had Trusonic woofers installed but switched to K-33s from Kllipsch and they are much better suited to that enclosure than the Trusonics. I do have Trusonic 80Frs for midrange and  the 5kt Trusonic tweeter mounted above the bass bin. I am thrilled with the result and plan to build a second Jamboree as I have two K-33 vintage Kkipsch woofers that are working quite well and ready for that home.  My inspiration for this building came from this thread and I wish to thank everyone who has posted and kept this topic alive. Kind regards, Dan

  4. Thanks Ski Bum.  I replaced the Trusonic 150 FR with an EV 15 Wk and got a noticeable improvement in performance.  These are kind of hard to find, so I don't think I will build a second enclosure unless one comes up.  Tom, these Trusonics do sound old and tired, if that was your point.  If you had something else in mind, I'm too stupid to figure it out.  But I have bought a book from Amazon on speaker cabinets and hope to be a  lot smarter in the future.

  5. I have a question for Captain Bob or anyone: is there a way to lower the impedance of a speaker?   I am new to all this and have a 8-ohm Trusonic 150 Fr I put in a corner horn and the results are not as good as hoped.  The enclosure is not a stock Khorn but very much like it  The speaker sounds a bit muffled and the bass is hard to find.  I was wondering if the problem was with the  impedance, of some other issue.  This is my first post and if I sound like ignoramus it is because I am.  Any advice would be most appreciated, and thanks in advance.  Dan from Pasadena
