  1. Jubilee bashorns you say, hmm. They must take up larger foorspace than a pair of Khorns?

I´m all set for selling my La Scalas and try to fin a "real" pair of Khorns. They are out there. I think it will not be worth the hassle to build them. If I would deside to try to sell Khorn clones I think they will be poorly recieved on the market. A fun build thou.

But Jubilee is a different animal... They are not to be found in my region. But they look huge, I don´t think I have corners for them to fit nicely.

For now, this weekend I will get my dream amp, McIntosh Mc275. Will connect it to either my Forte 1 or my Chorus II, depending on who sounds the best.

My Chorus is on a remake. Previous owner painted them black, a nice walnut speaker haha. So, after sanding I will oil them. Hopefully I will have them up and running next weekend. I think they will look the part. So exited haha.

  2. Hi,

I have a pair of La Scala and I´m considering to build a pair of Klipschorns, using all drivers and crossover from La scala. AL-3 filter. I know it is the wrong filter but I figure I can use it to start with.

All wood carpentry will be CNC machined so I do not worry about angles, they will be as precise as the blueprint says.

I thoughts, ideas about this? What am I missing? Is it a good idea, at all? The thing is that Klipschorns does not come out for sale in Scandinavia very often, so, why not use my driver and build a pair.

    Another timely post!

I HAD LaScalas with the AL-3 crossover. Loved ‘em! Plug and play.

Sold ‘em when I got LaScala Industrial Splits. They came with AL crossover... Never even listened to them like that, put Crites A/4500 crossovers and CT125 tweeters in immediately. Was not as impressed as I expected. Very refined sounding LaScalas now and I miss the bite!

Recently got some AA crossovers from another forum member to compare!

I will try to get the AA’s and a pair of K-33’s swapped in this week and chime back in with the results.

I have been thinking of that solution as well. 4,5k x and a Crites tweeter. Reading some good things about that combo as well.

Can you explain what you didn't like about it? When you say "refined sounding", I'm struggling to get that means in a bad way 🙂

Since I bought my tube amps they really bloomed out I think. They wasn't bad sounding before but now they are doing it right somehow haha. Can't put my fingers on it though.

  4. I actually do like how it sounds! Just wondering if I were missing out on something [emoji846]

Voice coils get burned if you overpower. That being said, I've learned in my old age, if it sounds right, runs right, don't rock the boat! You can't imagine how many here, and on other sites, keep trying this, trying that, just to find it's never right. Our ears get weaker and weaker as we age, especially listening to loud music/ loud cars. Your one of the lucky ones that is happy with his system!

  5. I'm afraid I won't like it after a rebuild haha.

The thing is that my speakers worked at a discotheque before.

Since then me and previous owner have been trying to put them back to original shape.

Don't know if anything else except caps goes bad if they get to much power and perhaps amplifiers that ar clipping. And I changed caps.

  6. Hi everyone,

I have a pair of La Scala with AL3 filter. I did a re cap and think they sound really good.

    But...

I keep reading that sooo many recommend AA-filters.

What difference is there between my filter and AA, sonically.

I used Audophon, medium to low price caps.

Should I do anything or just keep enjoy my speakers as is?

  7. Opening an very old thread here..

Anyone know how to get hold of a horn like this?
I bought a pair of La Scala that came with a pair of Eminence APT-50. I think that they sound ok but I would like to have them installed inside the speakers as original. Mine are mounted on top.

It does not have to be these fancy wooden horns, I just want them look original.
    Any ideas? 26ba41d972a3560494897548ca995153.jpg

  8. Good question! If you unscrew the tweeter driver from the horn, does it look the same as you K-55 mid driver?

Bob made horns for both tweeter threadings I believe. I would give him a call to see what he has and if he would sell just the horns.

His horns are a drop in for the K-77.

    Bruce
He just sell complete sets, driver and horns. I understand him.
But it feels kind of odd to buy a new set of tweeters when I'm okay with the one I have. If I buy new ones, I would like to buy something even better, not similar.

  9. I would not worry too much about taking wattage used measurements. It has been done by many on this forum with the same results, 2 watts or less being used. Of this you can be assured of. That being said some of the higher wattage better SS amps do have fantastic bass. The best bass I have heard has been from some of the newer Class D offerings. For me the mids are where music lives. I can always turn on my sub on for strong deep bass. For the best vocals and mids tube rule.
I have about 3meter from couch to front of the speakers.
Sometimes I play quite loud, concert level. I don't know how many watt it takes to do so. dec6f42dd1a711e959e6f9928c7a37cb.jpg

  10. As with any audio product on this or any forum you are going to get multiple opinions on this subject. From everything I have read the K77 is an excellent sounding tweeter but delicate, hench reason for 3rd order filters and safety components to protect it. I do not think you would go wrong buying this crossover,
    http://www.critesspeakers.com/bk-sound-type-a4500-crossov.html
and either one of the aftermarket tweeters Bob sells, CT125 or CT120.
    http://www.critesspeakers.com/new-tweeter-replacement-for.html

I believe this to be one of the better aftermarket improvements with the tweeter inside the cabinet retaining the original appearance. That crossover network is a 1st order as with the type A crossover. Paul Klipsch considered a 1st order crossover best sounding with his horn speakers as I do. It is going to be hard to know who to believe when asking an opinion on a forum. Do some research yourself and go with your best information using your own reasoning.

But getting back to your first post on this subject that big part of the 2 components you originally asked about is a power resistor which I am almost sure is still good. Easy to check with an ohm meter but I do not know any circumstance where a 25 watt resistor in a crossover network would burn out. You could just replace the polyswitch with the one I mentioned at Parts express and be good to go. Right now the tweeter section is being attenuated with a 100 ohm resistor, hench practically no sound from the tweeter. With the polyswitch in parallel with the resistor electrons (sound) is going to take the point of least resistance and go through the polyswitch vs the resistor. As I and many others have said we think you would be perfectly fine just removing the resistor and burned out polyswitch and just soldering in a piece of wire. Both the resistor and polyswitch are there to cover Klipsch a** from burned out tweeters from crazy people abusing the speaker. Under any reasonable sound level and above the original stock tweeter would be fine.
    Thank you for your answer!
If I keep under rated 100w can I still use k77 without the resistor?

I have been looking at ALK Eliptrac HF HORN with B&C DE120 driver.
    http://www.alkeng.com/trachorn.html#tweeter
    Any experience in that tweeter?

  11. I haven't heard a k77, should I even bother to get hold of a pair? The one thing I would like is to get my tweeters inside of the speakers.
I think that my APT-50 sounds really well. But as I said, I have nothing to compare with.
So how should I think in this. Filter and tweeters, which way is the the best way?
