  1. This thing is tricky with movies, too. May need to find some box that switches between receiver speaker output and amp speaker output. Any ideas?

Currently have the amp on and in my rack to see how warm it gets in there. 7.5" tall, 8" space. Warm, but not hot. Still, I may need to rebuild the rack and put the tubes on top, plus buy a fan for the top of the Marantz, which gets toasty as well.

  2. Ok, first impressions, first night, out of the box:

Smoother and more detailed than the Parasound. Better-defined soundstage. I'm feeding it the preouts from my Marantz SR7013. Switching back and forth between room correction via Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and Pure Direct, I think I prefer room correction. Kind of a weird room. But I need to recalibrate soon with the 3502p in the signal path. I've got some weird bass thing going on. May need to relocate the sub.

By the way, it sounds fantastic. But so did the Parasound.

Bit of a buzz plugged straight into the wall, but it's inaudible while listening.  I'll try it in my power conditioner tomorrow.

It comes with a 60-day money back guarantee, so I'm going to see what happens.

It's true about it revealing shitty recordings. Turns out some of my favorite songs are shitty recordings.

But Norah Jones, Nat Cole, Sinatra, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Johnny Cash, Diana Krall, Stan Getz, all sound amazing.

Too much listening with my head tonight. Too focused on form.

By the way, if you've never listened to this, listen to this:

Here's the thing, a tube is a fairly complex component, susceptible to variations of manufacture, even within the same batch. Of course there are small differences in "zones of optimal performance" (ideal voltages) between the same type of tube of different brands. But I can guarantee you one thing that I bet the amp builders here will agree with: the circuit design has way more to do with the the sound of an amp than any tube of the same type you install. You may be able to distinguish some differences between brands and even NOS vs New Production (hopefully price paid is commensurate to manufacturing quality and consistency of SQ). Remember I am talking about the same type of tube, if you start rolling different types (EL-34 vs KTxx for example), you'll get significant changes in SQ because the circuit is seeing resistances, capacitances, and other characteristics way different from what it was designed to see (usually resulting in increased THD). Some amps can easily handle the differences, some might need mods.

The Tung-Sols are more than adequate. What amp do you have?

    Jolida 3502p.

John, where about do you live? I only ask because there may be someone close by that would lend you an amp to try out. Most people on this forum are real nice and don't mind helping a fellow forum member out. I've loaned out equipment several times. It's a lot cheaper than buying one of everything and seeing what you like best.

Found folks like that on motorcycle forums as well.

I guess most folks are just nice like that. :D

I built a Latino ST-120 about 10 years ago and it is still running strong.Bob Latino is a great guy, and will answer any and all questions you may have. His amps are top notch, and a real value.

The more I read about him and his Dynacos, the more intrigued I become.

I live in Escondido, CA...just north of San Diego.

Pretty much the case, the reason for push pull amplifiers. More power. The 5 watt SET amplifiers are plenty enough for my LaScala's in an average size room. Room size of course is subjective. Just remember 5 watt amplifiers were used in movie theatres for years.

Well see, that's the thing, man...I have a pair of Cornwalls. Maybe "rock out volume" should be handled differently? I dunno. We will definitely see.

Any interest in a Dynaco sca-35 with Dave Gillespie efb upgrades? Also has st-35 output boards in it. Puts out a solid 17.5 watts.

Ok, now I know the difference between an SCA and an ST.

    Are all these Dynacos SET?

  8. Omg I stayed up late reading forum arguments about tubes, and am happy to discover that no one agrees on which tube is better for anything...unless I want to spend twice the value of my amp on some 1965 NOS General Electric 6550s or New Jersey Tung-Sols.

So I won’t have to spend more money on upgrading the Russian Tung-Sols that come with my amp.

You know, if I decide to keep it.

Oh Christ, I’m starting to sound like one of you crazy Tube People.

    1) What’s the difference between an SCA and an ST?

    2) Who’s Dave Gillespie?

    3) efb?

    4) what difference do the output boards make?
    5) What are output boards?

Do I really need to know how to build an amp before I can enjoy it?

  10. One thing I have noticed about the adding the Parasound: while it sounds richer and fuller and more detailed, the soundstage is less distinct without it. With the Marantz alone, the soundstage seemed wider and deeper. Instruments in good recordings had a more distinct location in 3d space.

I’m hoping the Jolida will remedy that.

i also just discovered that it takes a good 300 HOURS for tubes to break in and open up! Wow! How much of a difference should I expect to hear?

  11. Wow, now here's a surprise. I was doing random searches on Ebay for Magnavox amps, and I came across the stereo that started it all.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnavox-2ST294-AM-FM-Micromatic-Turntable-Stereo-Tube-Console-1961-Mid-Century/203128583550?hash=item2f4b68357e:g:INMAAOSwP2VfHNnT

Six years old with one ear planted firmly in a speaker grille of one of these, listening to Whole Lotta Love from Led Zeppelin II. in This is ridiculous.

I remember every detail of this console (mostly because I was all of 30" tall when we met). I remember the weave of that grille fabric, the black flecks the finish, the feel of the doors on top when you slid them across their runners, the shape of the knobs, the word "STEREOPHONIC" on the controls...that tonearm.

    Man, everything is there. Weird.

How about, we were talking the other day and was asking if you were looking at a couple of your first choices. You had pulled the trigger on the Jolida.

Going to say you made a decision.

Am not going to bring you down.

Thinking you will love it. If you make another decision well alright. You will have choices, options. Please relax and if you find your decision is a mistake somehow well cool. It takes some time and feel you are wanting a keeper. It is on the way. As for tube preamps, well that may well be your next step.  Many to choose from there.

Your ears will tell you what you want.

Thanks, BB..I'm good. I admit, I'm a bit shocked at my sudden mania about the whole subject.

It seems I'm on a mission.

I mean, these are pretty high quality problems, right? Finding something that rewards my listening even more than it is now? A worthwhile pursuit.

But yeah, it's kind of grabbed me, hasn't it? LOL
