  1. Thanks, Chris. It does look promising. I suppose I could initially buy 1 and do a quick, dirty setup to see what the noise levels are like.
  2. Thread resurrection! I have been researching the various DSP options and came across these Hypex NCORE plate amps with intergrated DSP: https://www.hypex.nl/product/fusionamp-fa123/154 https://www.hypex.nl/documenten/download/1711 2x 125W amplification, plus 100W tweeter channel, analogue and digital inputs, 15 biquads per channel. Is there any reason why I shouldn't use something like this with my DIY La Scala? I really like the idea of a neat and tidy package which allows direct connection of the source and even has the add-on for volume and source selection via IR remote control.
  3. I’m in awe of these responses...... I really don’t have the technical knowledge to understand whats going on or to reply to some of the responses above. Reading between the lines of your reply above, I’m assuming that the fact that my la scala are very close to the back wall is not helping with the 140/150Hz peak i.e. the boundary effect??
  4. Thanks. I used 3/4 ply and installed braces. I have an RME ADi-2 DAC that I have borrowed, so I will have a play around with the EQ setting on that and see if I can correct the spike that way. Definately think I'll end up gong down the DSP route though.
  5. I have just taken the very first REW measurement of my clone La Scala which shows a substantial peak at 140Hz. This is L & R channel overlaid with 1/6th octave smoothing. Initial reading suggest that this is a room mode caused by the low ceilings in my room. Has anyone come across this before? One thread suggested this could be corrcted by raising the speaker off the floor?
  6. Thanks Tom. As mentioned in my original post, the reason for the question is that I am looking to go down the DSP route and I am interested in converting my la scala to a two way. However, I am limiting this query for aesthetic reasons to a horn flare that does not break the proportions if the la scala in a major way.
  7. I'm open to anything at the minute, within reasons..... Cost and aesthetics are important, I'm just looking for options and opnions.
  8. They have drivers with them. From what I can tell they are re-badged JBL 2425 drivers. Not sure what make / model the horn flares are but the add suggests they are 500hz. Would these be any good for going 2 way with the la scalas!??
  9. I've also spotted these, which are local to me...... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zomaz-compression-drivers-pair-of-model-2425-with-500hz-horns/283546069485?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 Any thoughts on these??
  10. The 501 looks promising..... shame I'm on the other side of the pond!! Would something like this works just as well: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Replacement-Horn-KLIPSCH-for-K510-Speaker-Cabinet-15-x-9-Bolt-On-2-90-x-60/333537431240?hash=item4da8614ec8:g:8pYAAOSwQNNeYpIy
  11. I'm starting out on the road to going active using DSP on my La Scala and was looking at the option of going 2 way with a different mid-range driver/horn. However, I'm really not in to breaking the proportions of the la scala in huge way so the K402 horn is definite no! 😄 What other Horn / driver combos would offer a sonic improvemnt when going 2 way without breaking the proportions / aesthetic? The Altec 511B may be an option..... any others?
  12. Thanks. At the minute I’m buying nothing as I have no real idea what can be achieved sonically. I have read plenty and took advice from a number of people that say they would never go back having gone active. I’m not going to shell out £1000+ on an active crossover to test a theory but I can borrow the Behringer FOC and hook it up to a cheap power amp to play around with an active setup. If I can see the benefits after that I will definitely take advice and go down the miniDSP or Xilica route.
  13. Thanks to everyone for the responses. I knew nothing about active setups until yesterday and a friend has offered to lend me the Behringer unit for as long as required to dip my toe, so to speak. I was going to use the Behringer with a passive pre and a cheap 6 channel power amp to have a play around. Are you saying that it isn’t even worth trying this setup? Will I see no improvement over the standard passive crossover???
  14. A few audio enthusiast friends have semi-convinced me that converting my la scala to an active setup may be a worthwhile project. Initial research seems to suggest that a Behringer DCX 2496 should do the job nicely, possibly using a 6 channel power amp or look at separate amplification for each driver set. https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=P0B6H Has anyone done this or something similar already? Any feedback on potential pitfalls?
  15. Good work, keep the updates coming!
  16. Thanks Gents..... I have done some quick maths and worked out the internal volume of my doghouse, plus the internal volume of the additional box. I'll see if I can find an online calculator where I can use these measurements, along with the specs of the K33 driver and work out the sweet spot for cabinet volume / driver response. This is all new to me so I will report back if I find anything of use.
  17. Thanks, I managed to find the size specifications. I suppose what I’m asking is does it need to be 10” high? Can the same effect be achieved with a shallower box? Raising the whole speaker by 10” seems rather a lot and I was wondering if anyone had modelled the mod using different sizes? From what I have read, the mod can be tuned to a certain extent using different length ports so could a shallower box be used and tuned to gain the same results?
  18. Sorry, I know this subject has been well covered but I can’t seem to turn up these specific details? What is the litre-age that needs to be added with the extra box and are there any other specific perimeters that need to be met? I.e. port length, port diameter? Thanks.
  19. 😂 I have a feeling the Cornwalls would be a far easier build! Unfortunately, I’m in the UK - which is why I built the La Scala in the first place. If I decide to go down this route I could always use the La Scala cabs as some kind of coffee tables...!?? I must admit, I do love them.....
  20. I love my clone La Scala and always feel very proud of the fact that I made them from scratch, but I can’t escape the fact that they are not ideal for use in my small lounge / listening room. This has got me thinking and looking at reconstituting the drivers and crossovers for use in something that may be more suited to my space and I’m leaning towards the Cornwall. Has anyone done this, or has anyone made the switch from La Scala to Cornwall? As I understand it, they use the same drivers but I would need a deferent mid-range horn and I assume I would need to make substantial changes to the Type A crossovers. Is there anything else I would need to consider? Thanks.
  21. When listening at low levels there is an audible background static hiss coming from the tweeters in my DIY La Scala and I'm beginning to think I may have gone wrong on the crossover somewhere. Does anyone else experience this or have I gone wrong somewhere??
  22. Apologies jimjimbo, I’m getting mixed up with the replies! But many thanks for the feedback. 👍🏻
  23. Sorry to resurrect this thread again, John. However, I am just now picking this back up again and it is almost impossible to get hold of 2uF film caps in the UK, would it be detrimental to use 2.2uF caps in place of the 2uF ones? Thanks in advance.....
