  1. Thanks. Not being technically oriented I'm still kind of confused... when I look at the specs for the speakers, they seem similar. What exactly is the difference? That is, what makes a main a main? Is it the enclosure? (SC-1 is enclosed, the SB-2, for example, is rear ported). Just trying to get a handle on it.
  2. I've read that some people have used their surround or bookshelf speakers as centers... so what about the other way around? Any reason I wouldn't want to use SC-1's as my main front speakers?
  3. I found that the Pioneer Receivers are also sold under the RCA brand name at Radio Shack. Although I didn't buy the model you're interested in, it is definitely the same line. I bought the RCA STAV-3990 on sale at Radio Shack and it seems to be identical to the Pioneer VSX-D710S. It sounds pretty good and I'm pleased with it, but I'm no expert. I replaced a Kenwood because the Kenwood had crappy push-down connectors for the rear speakers (on the model I had) and one broke off. The rear panel connections on the Pioneer/RCA seems pretty well thought out with all speaker connections having binding posts which accept banana plugs. Also two component video connections and 3 digital audio connections. I also like the "plus" setting for bass. That way I can run my front speakers as large and still get LFE sent to my subwoofer. Anyway, good luck.
  4. Another note... even though I addressed the previous post to Doug... I hope anyone feels free to answer (Please?). Thanks. - Troy
  5. Doug: Thanks for replying. Here's my issue. I have a corner (built-in) ent. center. It's drywall/stucco over 2x4 construction... since you're from AZ you probably know the style. The center section is big enough for a Toshiba 34" widescreen hdtv and leaves (maybe) about 6" on each side. So, I doubt I could squeeze in the SB-1's. BUT.. above this opening is another shelf area and I could put them there. The dividing shelf itself is about 6" in height (putting it the shelf bottom about 8" from the top of the TV). So, I could presumably put the center and the mains all together up there. It would put those speakers about 20" from the center of the screen and they would be facing (unfortunately) about 2' over our heads in the listening area. Maybe that's okay though? Also, the width of the upper shelf is about 38"... and I'm not sure if that's enough separation from eachother, especially if they're on the same plane. So, the questions are: - What's the general opinion on placing the mains and the center on the same plane? - What's the recommendation on the height placement of the soundstage speakers relative to the listening height? Also, the most important question... Where do I go to get therapy for overthinking/obsessing about this to the extent that it has taken over my life? Thanks!
  6. I'm assuming since no one has replied to my earlier post by now that I must not be on the wrong track on using a pair of quints with a C1 center... so I'm just gonna do it. It occurred to me though, after reading about others replacing their quints with upgraded speakers, that there might be an extra pair sitting in someone's closet. So, if you'd like to sell 'em, let me know. I'm also looking for a C1 center. Email me at: tjustesen@orovalley.org
  7. I have some space limitations which won't allow me to use anything but sats for my fronts. I'm currently happy enough with my Polk Sub and Surrounds, but want to add the C1 as my center (mainly due to the increased sensitivity... room is not that big and I have trouble with dialogue, etc. because I need to keep overall volume relatively low). Anyway, I want to match the speakers for the soundstage ... as I've been told I really need to do (and seems to make a lot of sense). I have about 5"-6" max on each side of the video and the Quints would fit. Can get them various places for about $50 pair, the C1 for about $120-$150. So, what do you think? Also, if anyone has any tips on best place to buy these please let me know. Thanks.
