  1. Dflip, I think I'll take your advice and rebuild the crossovers I have with updated parts. Money is a little tight right now. Today I had to rip out the stock batting inside the speaker. It smelled like a wet dog. It was really objectionable. I sprayed the batting with a lysol and let it air out but the smell was very strong after a few days. I hated to do this since the batting is very unique and looks cool the way it's installed. In the Cornwall II they don't even use batting on the inside of the speaker. Either they decided it wasn't needed or they were trying to cut corners and save some dollars. Anyway, I wanted to know if u are sure that the Type B network uses a 2.4mh inductor. I couldn't find any marking on the stock inductor that indicated value. The stock inductor looks like a transformer. Do transformers ever go bad. Thanks.
  2. I got my friend to part with his 1977 Cornwalls. They use the Type B network. The network looks simple. It has two transformers and two big oil caps. I'm wondering if anyone has the Type B and what they think of them? Is it worth upgrading the capcitors of buying a set of ALK's or just leave them alone. They sound good but and I have heard there sound for a long time at my friend's house... I'm trying to figure out if an upgrade is in order.
  3. I called Klipsch again and I guess I didn't understand them the first time. I was told that the older K-55-V driver goes to 6,000hz and that the modifier version goes to 7,000hz. Because the modified version has a higher frequency range the transition over to the tweeter is suppose to be a little smoother. However, it sounds like they are very similiar and not worth the bother of swapping out the older drivers for the newer ones. They must have made the older version for quite a while since I have them in these old Klipschorns I just got and a pair of 77 Heresys. I think the Klipschorns are from the 60's.
  4. Stig, I woud like to mount the older drivers to the outside of thenewer Cornwall cabinet. Do u think they would fit?
  5. Hi, I have a pair of Cornwall II speakers. They sound little harsh and breakup at higher listeing levels. Not ear bleed levels but fairly loud. Overall I like them but now that I have Klipschorns they have to be tamed. I have klipschorns too and the sound of the klipschorn is nicer and fuller with no breakup. Youcould even say the tweeter is a bit dull on the Klipschorn compared to the Cornwall. This is mostly a good thing. Anyway, my klipschorns have the K-55-V mids and K-77 tweeter. These drivers all have a 2" diaphram. My 86 Cornwalls have a K-57-K midrange driver and a K-79-K tweeter. All these drivers have a 1.5" diaphragm. I have the same amp driving both speakers (two amps both the same). I want to make a fix but I'm not sure if my problem is with the Cornwall crossovers, the smaller diaphragms or newer drivers. I have a friend who wants to sell me his older vintage Cornwalls for 450.00. The cabinets are beat up but the drivers are the older variety which are the same as my Klipschorns (V series). I could swap out the drivers from the older Cornwall and put them in to my Cornwalls II with the nicer cabinets. For crossovers I could use Klipshorn crossovers (I have two extra Type A's) or the older Cornwall crossovers. Any advice is appreciated. I could then sell the older Cornalls "as is" to recoup this upgrade. This message has been edited by hornhead on 08-12-2002 at 12:28 AM
  6. djk, All K55s have phase plugs. The only question is, is yours a one port or a two port? The K55V with push button terminals was a one port, the solder terminal K55V and the K55M are two port. http://www.atlas-soundolier.com/techLib/slsheets/SL2.1551.PDF Mine has the push button terminals. The guy from Klipsch said that it only goes to 5,000hz but Al measured the response and says it goes to 6,000hz. Is the two port a better driver or just sounds alittle different?
  7. U sure now how to get a guy's attention. Your tag line is almost as good as free Klipschorns here. Well not quite but u know guys we are....... Anyway, please tell us more about what got you into this hobby and what kind of setup you have. I think it's very refreshing to see a gal into the same hobby as us audio heads. Now if u could just take my wife out to lunch and maybe, just maybe a little of your enthusiasm for the "sport" might rub off. Hey stranger things have happened. HD
  8. Thanks, I guess the guy at Klipsch didn't know what he was talking about because he was the one who told me that the driver, I have, was modified to extend its frequency out to 6,000hz. Your design looks interesting. Is it fair to say that you're trying to isolate each drivers frequency range by using a high and low bandpass? Also, what is the 10ohm resistor for?
  9. I just got K-horns from my Aunt for little money. I noticed that the caps are ozzing a bit and the transformer looks rusty so I want to redo the crossovers. I was originally going to tri-amp them but I have ruled this out after much research. I just donwloaded the ALK crossover design and did an archive search. I read a lot of rave reviews but everyone was using the the modified V (phase plug removed) or M drivers that rolloff at 6,000hz, with the ALK crossovers. I have a much older klipschorn with the spring terminals. I was told that my driver starts rolling off at 5,000hz. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what modifications I would need to do to compensate for this on the crossover? I guess I would want to bring the crossover point of the tweeter down 1,000hz to compensate? Is this advisable and what would the capacitor value be to achieve this. Any advice is appreciated. I'm pretty handy with electronics so I don't think I'll have a problem building them. This message has been edited by hornhead on 08-11-2002 at 10:01 AM
  10. Hi, I'm new here but have been lurking for a while. I can't believe all the great information that is shared here. I had several questions about how the drivers rolloff naturally, with out the aid of a crossover, and at what frequencies the drivers turns on naturally. I have some xtra amps and may play around with tri-amping just for fun. Is this true: 1. The K-33 K-horn woofer naturally rolls off at 400hz? 2. The K-55-V midrange driver by design isn't heard until 400-500hz and then also rolls off naturally at around 6khz.? 3. The K-77 tweeter isn't heard until 3500hz and then rolls off naturally at 16khz?
