Interested in purchasing a set of Mark I or II Hersey speakers in good condition. I live near New Orleans and would be willing to travel up to 3 hours for the right set. Not particular in terms of stain color. Thanks.

Are these speakers still available?

In my experience the 280s are going to be more balanced and not as bright as the RF63s.
-
Both are very capable speakers but the 280s are going to have more bass response with the larger woofer.
-
While I don't own either model, I have listened to both and I find the RF7II's have more low end bass than the Hersey. The heritage line of speakers have a unique sound though so anything the Hersey may lack in bass it more than makes up for with mid-range capability.

It works but the sound profile is going to be different with Reference vs Reference Premiere lines. As a rule of thumb when buying new speakers, stay within the same series if at all possible.
-
I would look at a tube based preamp. It's hard to beat the sound produced by tubes.
-
Have you thought about the best of both worlds? I have a high-quality RCA switch between my amp and Receiver/Preamp setup. This way I can switch to tube based preamp for all my music and back to the receiver if I am watching a movie that requires Dolby decoding.
-
Have you considered bypassing the receiver and going directly to a reasonably priced tube based preamp/amp combination? I find the sound quality is so much better when I bypass my Denon receiver and go with a simple preamp/amp set up. As others have pointed out, the most simple configuration is often the best sounding.

I have a pair of 280s and I find the sound is much better when you supply them with 250-300 watts per channel. Since distortion generally starts at about 50% power, the headroom with a bigger amp reduces and/or eliminates any potential distortion at the same power level.

In my experience, the RP series speakers are definitely worth the higher price point.

I have my RP8000s about eight feet apart with the toe in. Even small adjustments to position make a big difference with a horn loaded speaker.

As others have said, Exact Copy is the way to go. I converted my entire CD collection of a few hundred CDs and this program made the process fairly painless.

I was just indicating that I am not particular when it comes to stain color. I will consider buying anything that is in decent shape. Thanks.
