I'd measure the DC resistance of each tweeter and compare to see if the suspect tweeter has a significantly higher reading. You can measure at the crossover if you disconnect one leg of the tweeter wiring.

You could also run some FM inter-station noise through the speakers and measure the AC voltage at each tweeter terminal and compare. Disconnect the tweeter

completely from the crossover. A significantly lower reading at the crossover output would confirm it's a capacitor, otherwise I would leave it alone.

What equipment do I need to do these tests? I’m a little

    confused. Thanks.

  2. Thanks to all you who have been answering my crazy questions the last few weeks. I just brought home a pair of 1983 Cornwalls. Only one owner. All original parts. Here’s the component list so  I’m assuming they are Cornwall 1.5.

    Cornwall
    1983
    K-77-M
    K52H
    K-33E
    B-3 crossover

one of the tweeters is super quiet. I’m hoping I can fix that with a simple recap.

I’ve reached out to Crites for recommendations but if you have any suggestions on mods or steps to take to bring these up to snuff please share. Thank you!!

It's amazing what a low noise and low distortion signal will do for a pair of speakers. My Fortes never sounded so sweet. The bass is very well articulated now, it has better texture and detail. The tweeters have something to do now too, cymbals have sizzle and ring with a nice decay. Detail is amazing, I can hear background sounds on some recordings, players breathing and moving. This amp is dead quiet, absolutely black background at full volume. I think maybe the better upgrade for old Klipsch speakers isn't new crossovers or caps but using a really clean amplifier instead. Compared to the six watt tube amp I was using it is a major improvement. I think my love affair with tubes is over.

Are your fortes modern heritage line or vintage?

  4. Love this thread! Anyone on here using the PA5 with classic Klipsch like Cornwall or Forte  and only 2 speakers? If I’m following most of you have multi speaker set ups.

Just thought I would, any one thinking of purchasing a new amplifier for an efficient speaker like horns will be way better off thinking quality over quantity when it comes to power.

Thanks bringing this back on topic.

what are some new SS amps that would be a good match with cornwalls?

I like vintage myself. Problem with vintage amps is they occasionally fail. I was running my ‘79 CWs with an HK Citation 16 until it decided to go. It took a woofer with it. Woofer replaced and I still haven’t learned my lesson, but if this original Onkyo M-504 blows….. Anyway I like vintage power….

Thoughts on the vintage Yamaha above?

Most recommendations can and will be debated so I’ll forgo that but to believe or assume that a tube amp is “better”

for Heritage Klipsch may well be a mistake. Well designed SS amps sound as good as well designed tubes with Heritage. Crappy tube

amps sound just as bad as crappy SS amps. They exist in both camps.

Great! That said do you have any recommendations for SS?

  8. What are some recommended solid state amps to pair with a set of 1983 Cornwalls? What specs should I be looking at?

Yes, I know that tube is better for these classic Klipsch and I will eventually get there. But for reasons I don't want to explain, I want to start with SS.

If I've read correctly that since the CW are so sensitive, the amp should have very low distortion. I'm looking at both vintage and modern.

Thoughts on these two or other recos? THANK YOU!
