  1. What's a dynamic range controller? How do they hook into the system and how much do they cost? Who makes them?
  2. I went into a Tweeter yesterday to ask about the Mobile Fidelity X10-D and the Margules Magenta ADE-24. The guy looked at me like I had two heads. He was like "I've never heard of those". He never really even heard of a DAC. He said it sounded like it was a gimmick with no real value and if I wanted to get the brightness out of my system I should get different speakers or amplification. He had me listen to some Vienna's powered by some B&K stuff that sounded awful. They sounded dead. The highs just weren't there and I felt like there was cotton in my ears. Then I listened to some Mirage speakers and those sounded better but they were still very uneventful. Then he said the Reference speakers from Klipsch are less bright than the Forte I's that I own. So he fired up a pair of RF-3's and low and behold there was music the way it should be. Very nice speakers. And they are on sale for $700 becuase Tweeter is clearing out there Klipsch inventory because they will no longer be a Klipsch dealer(to bad for them). So, the bottom line for me is once you go Klipsch there's no going back. I'm still going to try and warm things up on my Forte's with either an ADE-24 or a X10-D. I can't change the reciever/amp at this point because I bought it(Yamaha RX-777) only a year ago and there's no way the wife will OK me to buy something else.

  5. The more I think about this the more I lean towards a Musical Fidelity X10-D or a Margules Magenta ADE-24. I just bought the Yamaha RX-777 so I really can't spend too much and all I really want(for now anyway) is to smooth over some of the harshness on this system. I don't have a very high-end CD player so I bet one of these DAC's will have a substantial effect on the sound. At least that seems to be the consensus about these 2 units. Good for a cheap CD player but not too effective on an already good player.
  6. Don't sell them. You'll regret it later when the kids are grown a bit and you have more time.
  7. Thanks for the response. I guess what I'm looking for is a less harsh sound out of my system. The Yamaha stuff just seems to be a bad match for the high resolution of the Forte speakers. I was thinking either that ADE-24 or a different reciever might help but I can see know that the CD player is probably having a part in the harshness.
  8. I have Forte I's and am driving them with a Yamaha RX777 reciver. It seems bright and harsh to me. Thinking of either the Margules ADE-24 or if I'm going to stick with a SS reciever for now, which reciever is considered to be warm sounding? Rotel? NAD? Nakamichi? When I bought the RX777 I was listening to Cambridge Soundworks speakers. I had just returned a Nakamichi RE-10 becuase it sounded almost too dead or too muffled on those speakers. When I got the Forte's back the Yamaha sounded a little too bright. I'm starting to think the Nakamichi would have been a better match. What do you all think?
  9. I think I'm seriously considering this unit. How does it connect into my system. I have a Yamaha RX-777 reciever, a Yamaha 5 disc CD player and Forte speakers. Do I just plug the CD player into the ADE-24 and then the ADE-24 into the reciever? Is my system the intended sytem for this unit. My CD player is not top of the Yamaha line but the reciever is. Thanks for any advice.
  10. I have a pair of Forte' I's. I'm wondering at what volume are people hearing this distortion caused by the Hepner horns? I've been feeling that my setup sounds a bit bright. I'm driving my fortes with a Yamaha RX-777 reciever.
  11. I recently got my Forte's back. While I was without them I had a pair of Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble speakers. I used an old Yamaha to drive them and at some point bought a new Yamaha RX-777 reciever for more power. Now that I have my Forte's back I've been reading a lot on theis NG about the HK430 and EICO HF-81 as being a goosd match for my Fortes. I feel like I screwed up in spending so much on a new Yamaha as opposed to buying a HK430 for 100 bucks. Are the older SS amps and cheap tube amps that much better than a new SS amp like the Yamaha 777? should I sell the Yamaha and get a tube amp or one of the older HK's? What do you think?
  12. I tried the velcro but it didn't work. I ended up just wrapping the oins on the screen with masking tape so they fit tighter in the holes on the speaker and that seems to work for now.
  13. I'm thinking about getting a tube amp to drive my Fortes'. There is a lot of info on this site but it can get confusing. I hear about entry level amps that are good but then people talk about modifications and upgrades(sounds fun but I don't have the time since I have 2 kids, a job and am currently learning the saxophone). At this point I want an affordable amp(500-1000) that will have a good sound and not NEED me to make modifications. Oh, and it needs to be able to drive my Fortes' at a decent level. Not "headbangin level" but I don't want it to be under powered. Thanks, Bob
  14. Velcro! Da'h. What a great idea! I can't believe I didn't think of that! Thanks.
  15. Hello, I have a pair of Forte's and the screens keep coming off. They sorta curl a bit and pop out. Has anyone experienced this and hoe did you fix it? Thanks Bob
  16. Keep listening to Sax Collossus. It's an amazing CD. Give it a good chance. I'm a tenor player so I should know.
  17. Yup. I 'm using a Yamaha CDC-775 for a cd player.
  18. deang, I don't have a sony reciever I have a Yamaha RX-777. Is that any better than the Sony you mentioned? Thanks, Bob
  19. mobile homeless, Nice to hear from a fellow jazz listener. I LOVE jazz and I have all those artists you listed. I also play the tenor sax and my teacher gives me a CD a week to listen to and burn. I'm really bummed that my set up is than adequate when it comes to jazz listening. Do you think that I would gain a little improvement if I went with an X10-D or the ADE-24 specifically for listening to jazz? Thanks, Bob
  20. mobile homeless, I was considering this unit because I bought a Yamaha RX-777 receiver about a year ago and don't want to invest in a new reciever or amp. When I bought the RX-777 I had Cambridge Soundworks speakers. It sounded pretty good on those speakers for that level of speaker but then I got my Klipsch Forte's back from my sister and the Yamaha/Klipsch combination seems harsh at times. Over all, I think it sounds great but at certain times it's just too harsh. I primarily listen to Jazz from the 40's,50's and 60's(ie Coltrane, Miles, Rollins). These are all old recordings that have been digitally remastered. This is were I feel the sound could be toned down a bit. So, I was hoping that the ADE-24 might do the trick. Also, I'm using a Yamaha CDC-775 CD player.
  21. Does Klipsch have new replacement parts for older speakers like Forte I's? By parts I mean the horns, woofers and passive radiators. Thanks
  22. Wat about hard woods like oak and cherry. Are these types of woods not appropriate for cabinets or are they just too expensive?
  23. Do many people use this unit? How do people like it? I posted that my Forte's are a bit harsh with my Yamaha RX-777 receiver. I got some advice to get this unit but I would like some more input from others that have used it. If it's as good as the reviews say it is then it should be worth the 190 bucks. Thanks, Bob
  24. Yeah I only play CD's. Don't really listen to the radio much. What's a Margules ADE-24? I also read on this forum that Classical music is not accurately reproduced by Forte's. Is that true. I haven't really listened to classical on them yet. I mainly listen to Jazz(coltrane and miles not the smooth stuff).
