    Travis

Hello Travis thank you for the help, i am in Civitanova Marche, Marche ,center Italy, if you will go in Italy you can easily ship them from a post office directly to me, i could pay the crossover components and i can pay the discomfort that i create for you , it will take only 20 minutes even less to ship them, you will be doing to me a big favor Soo i will have Klipsch certified crossover, tell me if it's okay for you i will write you via private message, thanks!!!!

Aoran, ok, but the Mundorf you want to order are no! MKT (Polyester) types they are MKP (Polypropylene) types. This is exactly the difference half of the whole thread was about.

Even if it is a bit more expensive (but we have neared a good price in general finally when you order everything from this Italian website) I would order the MKT types, this yellow housebrand, because only those are similar to that what Klipsch sells and recommends themselves. If you will afford it you could buy the Mundorfs and the yellow MKT types and make your own comparison. The difference will not be only a change in sound (may be more metallic harsh with the Mundorf) but the balance and the timing of the whole speaker could be a bit out of tune.

Even if the caps are intended to control the squaker and tweeter, they have influence how the bass will perform.

I do not say that it will not work at all when using the Mundorf caps but after so much effort I would take the MKTs at least as the Alternative choice. We can discuss about the freedom of taste and choice, I only say that the MKT are electrically the right ones because of their properties.

Funnily the cheapest Mundorf MKP will work better with the Khorn than the more expensive ones because the expensive ones may have an even lower ESR which is the opposite of our goal here but they are only a compromise.

Only I imagine you listening for years to your pride and joy Khorns but because of a 10 € difference you never have experienced how the Khorn was intended to sound.

ah ok! i didnt understand it then, https://www.costruireaudio.com/crossover/condensatori/condensatori-mkt-250v-5-poliestere/

you mean this one polyester, they are very cheap , thanks!!

@Deang has already answered your question, I would do the same and I am glad that Dean just told you which coil to use. Are you familiar with a soldering iron and can you read such a simple circuit? Then it should be no problem at all…or you know a buddy who can do it for you.

If Jantzen inductors are not on offer of Mouser, you could find an inductor from another brand perhaps because I know you will complete the money needed for free shipping. I think, Dean gave you all the parameters you must know. Later on you could go again through this thread, I remember someone posted the AA circuit…

And to confirm what Dean says, to build the AA type crossover, beside the additional coils (one per speaker) you need two additional 2uF capacitors in total, one for each speaker. And as I posted before then you have two caps with 2 uF each for the tweeter in each loudspeaker. As you may order 1 uF types to reach exactly 2 uF in sum you have to order in total for both speakers eight capacitors with 1 uF each. Then you run always two of the 1 uF caps in parallel to make them a 2 uF capacitor.

Thank you very much for all your suggestions, i have decided to do the AA crossover, as for making it i will try to get some help from a friend, i still can't find the inductor that dean said i have to to get

To reach the value of 13 uF for both channels you are right to order 2x 6.8 uF ,2x 4.7 uF and 2x 1.5 uF.

If you want the tweeter caps for the AA networrk (I thought you have the A network) you need for every channel 2x 2 uF. That means to order 8x 1.0 uF in total for both channels because exactly 2 uF you get only from JEM.

A note, if you order more than 50€ at Mouser, you have free shipping, at least to Germany. Less than 50€ means 20€ shipping in addition. Perhaps you need two coils if you want to make the AA network?

Yes i was seeing that i get free shipping for 50 euro, i have the original A , i could go for it, or make the AA  do i need only  caps? Thank you , i was asking this because it cost me the same, because I don't reach the free shipping with the A crossover as they need less components

This is the last missing cap that I use in combination with those 1.5uF and 4.7uF polyester types I posted above a few days ago to reach 13 uF

    https://www.mouser.de/ProductDetail/KEMET/A50IT4680AA60J?qs=Jv4FAWB%2B0HY9xI8CEcLngw%3D%3D

    I've added to the cart 2 6.8 uF, 2 1uF, 2 4.7uF, 2 1.5uf

Am i missing something for the AA CROSSOVER? Thanks man this way is way way cheaper

I know first hand the bean counters ultimately call the shots in the end and these would never be considered by any corporation interested in profits but I would love to try these out.

Mouser says paper but the datasheet says 2uF 1kv "A" case is a hybrid paper/film and foil capacitor. Most likely paper and polyester. These would be extremely similar to the original can style capacitors Klipsch used. Since the price is not so attractive to me I'll probably stick with the hermetically sealed Russian paper in oil types that I know work fantastic in an AA network.

As for the OP, I'm glad to hear he reached out to JEM for the Tecate caps, they would certainly be the safest choice if shipping/customs costs are not prohibitive. If you live in Europe there is a Bulgarian seller of Russian PIO capacitors, I'm in the states and have purchased caps from them many times with excellent results. If you find that you can't go the JEM capacitor route I highly recommend Russian PIO caps from that Bulgaria dealer.

we will see what JEM says 😁 then if not i could go this route

get in touch with  JEM via email , they are authorized to sell   klipsch Genuine capacitors , tell Jim that  you are in Italy ,   find out how much it would cost to ship 1 kit of A  or AA Network  capacitors  via USPS  or by  mail  , if that does not work , reach out to me by PM   .

BTW if I were you I would think about to upgrade your type A xover to a type AA if you have an amp with more than fly wattage. All you need is one more little coil and one more capacitor. The effect is much more significant than you could perhaps imagine. As I said start first and get used to your speaker as is. I would also let check the capacitance and the ESR of your original capacitors. If they measure ok than there is no better way than keeping them.

Thank you for all the response, ive read that the AA crossover it was built to protect the delicate tweeter , soo it can handle more watts if im not mistaken, i have 2 parasound jc1 monoblocks , they have unlimited power , it could be a good idea

Thank you very much. You answered faster than I added to my question😀: did you find them in your area or did they travel across Italy to your place?

i did travel to near venice! soo i did something like 4.30+4.30 hours drive , when i saw them i didnt miss the chance, here in italy the klipschorn often they were founded in the mohogany color and they were strong for my living room, soo when i saw this occasion i closed the deal immediately, when i first heard them my jaw dropped, the impressive dynamic range from a classic orchestra piece really impressioned me

Your Khorns looks in very good shape, a fantastic catch. Was it in your family or did you have just very good luck finding them?

yes they were restored by the previous owner, i bought them 1.5 year ago, the previous owner had very good expierience with the khorn as he did as well 2 diy pairs, soo i bought them without thinking as i know the care he took from them

They were very good in the sense of the way how PWK used them to build up a circuit from parts he had available.

Components and devices from one era can always be combined harmoniously and organically. For example, paper in oil caps or polyester caps with exponential horns like the K400, or spoked wheels with a Jaguar E Type. In retrospect, it sometimes looks like all the parts and materials were deliberately made. But mostly one always resulted from the other. And accordingly, it would not fit aesthetically and technically if a Jaguar E Type were to be driven today with carbon rims or a 1970 Khorn were to come with the most modern polypropylene caps.

I don't want to talk about nostalgia, that would be wrong and incorrect from today's point of view. No, we are talking about the innovations that made the earlier time modern.
For example, a Jaguar D Type was the first car with disc brakes and, apart from Bugatti, the first car with aluminium rims. The Khorn was the most compact and modern fullhorn speaker for the home and had the lowest distortion factor of all speakers you could think of.

    nice comparison i loved it

Congrats to your vintage Khorns, Aoran. Is it possible that you could take a picture of the crossover where the parts can be seen? May be you have already new caps from someone who owned them before you? Anyway, it would be of help. The original caps were motor run caps, quite big tin cans of the size of a cigarette package. The chance is there that they leak the oil over the decades. But in original state they were very good sounding.

Hello thank you for the response, i have the old big can , i think that they have not leaked the oil i have to re-check, i didn't now they were very good thanks!

  15. Hello everyone, i am from Italy and i got a pair of 1969 Klipschorn, i love them, right now i got an idea , changing the caps, they are for sure really old, as is the original crossover, the A one, could you help me in what to buy? I will leave the original transformers on ,thank you very much for your help , i love this speaker and i hope to make them sound better, right now i am changing home Soo i can put my hands on them, cheers!!
