  1. Does it have to be an integrated or do you have a preamp? I was originally going to use the Michi integrated as a pre. Klutsy but it was worth a try. That was really odd when I hooked up that way, the Lab 12 behaved in an odd fashion in that I had volume to highs and mids with the volume on the Lab 12 at ZERO.. But anyway, hum still there. However hearing the Lab 12 on the Cornwalls was awesome. Was thinking Quicksilver mid monos initially at least, the Michi would be the "pre". Not sure that is a good avenue but many do that and it works fine I hear. Sort of pumping the brakes now. The Michi is great , dead quiet and wonderful detail etc but not the rich full tube type experience. The detail was still there with tubes but a nice warm sound. The tubes added something but did not detract at all. This was all low level stuff though. Just got the Cornwalls yesterday so today I'll try a bit of higher spl rock and hear some base. I disconnected all subs till I get a baseline.
  2. Ok. Amp going back. Fortunately it's local. Also a tech will check it out. Bad tube? Thanks to all who chimed in... Anyone know of a great tube integrated that works well? Some mention Primaluna but I'm not sold on them. After hearing tubes on the Cornwall I'm up for grabbing a Tube amp and selling the Michi.. Thanks!
  3. I've tried all the basic stuff. Outlets, cables, power conditioning etc.. Not sure this is 60Hz but possible I guess. Ill do another search for forum topics. The odd thing is the super high gain associated with volume knob. I think they correlate but I can't prove that. May be unrelated.
  4. Hi.... I don't think this is a speaker problem but wonder if you guys have experienced this? I upgraded from H3s to Cornwall IV today. Great speaker! I got a massive 350wpc SS amp as I had electrostatic at one point. It drives the Cornwalls great. Zero noise etc. I'm also trying a Lab 12 Integre4 integrated tube amp. Sounds ridiculously good but when it turns on I immediately get hum from both speakers. I have changed cables, disconnected source etc but hum stays. It is not affected by volume knob.. Also of note, I can barely turn the the volume pot past 9 0 clock. Seems like perhaps I have really high gain on this amp and my noise floor is too high?

  6. Great vid thanks. I'm new to the forum and just got some Forte IIIs. Love them. At the moment I have two sets of speakers and the panels need to be about 3 feet from the wall. In order to not have the Fortes behind them, they are positioned 17in from the wall. The speakers sound fantastic but as you might expect, not a ton of bass. Fortunately I do have two REL T9xs. Unlike you I guess, I do feel subs add to any system so I'm not suffering from lack of bass but will definitely take the advice and get them back to a wall and run some tests. These are not going anywhere soon but perhaps the panels will.
  7. Wondering if it's possible to run main SS amp to low end and pre amp out of main amp to tube amplifier to run to high end? I would imagine I may need to tweak for gain perhaps but maybe impedance or slew rate could foul me up? Or something else I'm not thinking of...
  8. That would be inside then at about 6.5. As my ears are 8ft back from center of sound plane and 35in high. I'll try there first and search for realed threads. Thank you
  9. Hello everyone... Old fart out in N. Colorado joining the forum. I got a couple Forte III SEs coming today. I have read a ton of specs, history the manual etc. Not sure what to expect but I'll give a brief description below and if anyone has input-thank you. I will have two polar opposites of "vintage" type speakers in my room. Basically a large rectangle with the corners too far apart to access. My amp is a Michi X5. At 350 into 8ohms and 600 into 4, that should get the Fortes going (lol). And yes, I'm worried a bit about brightness etc but I'll work with that. I can experiment with stands or bi amp those babies by adding a tube amp for higher freqs but that's something down the road. The reason for the amp (other than I love it and it does everything well) is my other set of speakers are Martin Logan CLSIIz panels. So I got detail and articulation in one set and say for rock music, dynamics galore in the Fortes. My challenge will be they cannot both take up the same space or sweet spot per say. The speakers obviously need to be on or near the same plane. A Forte behind a panel is a non starter. So if the Fortes are inside the Panels they will be about 6.5 feet apart center to center. If they are outside the panels they will be about 12.5 feet apart. I think the owners manual states 6-15ft but wondering what you guys have experienced in your set ups. I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on where to start? ( 6.5ft or 12.5 feet) I'll also need to experiment with distance to the wall as Panels like a further distance than the Forte but I can't have a Forte behind a panel...that would not work well. Thanks in advance for any thoughts. At this point I can't even change my avatar but perhaps in the future I can post a pic if that will help. Before I think about stands or all the cute stuff, I just need to get both speakers in space where they are reasonably happy and can image well. I look forward to learning a ton here. Eventually I'll go with one large Heritage but for now, I'm running dual....Thanks!
