  2. parts list 1 K-Horn Parts List 1.pdf
  3. I havn't had much time to work on this lately. Here is what I have figured out so far, if someone is interested. I also have a scaled version that i would like to try in the next couple of months. K-Horn1.pdf
  4. Just finished rescaling by 81.25%, only took three hours. lol Why 81.25%, right now I'm not sure. Really there was some thought into it, but I think 80% would have been a nice round number. First I measured my listening height and figured I would have to scale 80% to 82% to get the mid at my ear height. then for some reason I started figuring I may use 16mm (5/8") material in a full size model, so scaled at 81.25% would give me 13mm (1/2"). so that's what I did, ended up with some wiered dimendions though. The room is 14'x12' and I'll rearange to use the length if I get/build a corner horn.
  5. Thanks Frzninvt, Ill start search Google and yahoo too. I wonder if any of the newspapers publish want adds to the web, my local one does. i.e. CAN (Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa) US (Bangor, Portland etc) Im curious, I wonder how many people here live in Eastern Canada. I felt kind of alone until PSG popped up. Im sure there must be a few. Its been a few years since we had a decent display locally, (that I saw anyway). I was in Southern Nova Scotia a couple of years ago, they at least had a pair of RF-5 on display. OH, I am not saying this to put down the dealers etc. I know there is a small number of sale in hi fidelity equipment here in comparison to , well nearly every where else. Lol just kidding. Most of the display items here are B&W, Energy & Paradigm I tend to walk past most of the others. For the longest time, if I mentioned Klipsch I got a sideways sort of blank look. Thats change since Klipsch hit the market with the ProMedia stuff a few years ago though.
  6. PSG, yeah, I don't think I could part with the Heresy. They are part of the family. Even if I do experiment with them in a full horn cab and sound like heaven it's self, they will go back to being heresy. I'll just have to find a beat-up pair on ebay and part them for the job. They would have to be beat though, I would hate to have a perfectly good cabinet laying around.
  7. A long drive, I guess. Thats why I started toying with the idea of building my own. That and a number of people are saying how difficult construction is. That made it sound even more fun. But I did some costing, found parts on ebay, and I believe the cost is going to be $2,000 give or take a $200. It would be fun to build, but for the same money, I would like to have a serial number and tag. I am going to check the local authorized service store for the parts cost too, just havent had time to go yet. I also started toying with the idea of scaling down my plans and stuffing the guts out of my heresy in to; 1. see if I can build the cabinet. 2. Give me something to work for a couple of months without spending $1,000 on drivers. 3. see how the heresy would sound aa a fully loaded horn. 4. be able to scale the cabinets to fit my room. I started scaling my khorn drawing last night, but I am wondering how much to scale the plans to make them suitable for the k-22. or how much performance would be effect by scaling. I will keep my eyes open in Main, NH etc The only problem with ebay is, you got to be ready to jump when something comes along. I normally have to think and ponder about things before acting and then I will be too late.
  8. I read a few older post last night, one HBDRbuilder mentioned the cost diff between building and picking up a used pair. I can see where je is coming from and believe that it would be in my best interest to pick up a used pair if I could find a pair relatively close. Well, their getting closer. I may be able to find a local pair before I get a chance to build mine. Lol These ones are almost make able in a weekend, as long a I dont stop for sleep, food or rest stops. 43 hours and two min. round trip. Any idea how much it would cost to ship a pair of khorns?
  9. digjr, I like you mini Belle. A mini Khorn has me intrigued too. I assume that if you used a 12" driver that you used the k-22, is that correct? When you scaled the drawings for the Belle, did you run the specs to determine the horn ratio and opening size? The reason I am asking is, I am interested in scaling the khorn and if I use the k-22 I need to know the parameters for the horn. Any expectations for a khorn base bin using a k-22. How does the mini belle sound compared to the full sized Belle
  10. I was wondering if anyone has the specs on the k-33 and/or the k22.
  11. Gil, "There was a lot of junked plywood. Grr. Everything was an uphill battle. It would never have been completed except I was crazy determined" I hear you. lol I had a similar problem with an earlier. Since then I decided to cut the bigger pieces first. Then if its not cut right, I can use it later for the smaller pieces. If everything went the way it was suppose to, single cuts and gluing, where would the fun be. Oh yeah, listening to your new creation. crazy determination got that too. Lol I cant wait to start cutting, but I know that I will be sitting looking for and gathering cash for drives and crossovers for quite some time.
  12. Here I modified the wings in the base bin to fit within the 60 degree flange. that was calculated fro the top and bottom sheet. It looks like the interior wings should match better, but I didnt have very pretty angles to work with. i.e. 19.5388 degrees instead of 25. I also tried to put all the information I found for the type "b" head and implement it into this drawing. The height is a little taller because the openings differ through the info I have, but that should be easy enough to mod when I have my actual mid and high horn. The depth and therefore the size of the horn ant the final exit point is what I was trying to set, which I think I have. Oh, I was looking at the vertical back piece and though it looked like it could use something to stiffen it up. I put a vertical support in and figured it could also help separate the left and right sound waves. I also looking at the upper and lower void made by the winged section. Any reason these could not be filled. I was thinking of spray foam and cut/sand the excess away. Thats the only section that I can see that Paul didnt/couldnt make use of. edit I take that back, as I submitted this email, I was sent back to the post and the old photo of the partly finished base bin came up. Then it hit me. I had wondered previously why the short vertical section coming from the face had a corner cut off flush with the wing section I mentioned previously. Then I realized that this allows access to these wings making the sealed section of the horn larger. The plans that I used for most the drawing shows a rectangular piece (#5) matching up with the top and bottom. Haha. Ill have to make another modification to that too I guess. Im in awe, I cant imagine how much time when into building this box. I think I will look at puting another support for those wings though. K-Horn Layout1 (2).pdf
  13. Hi Darrell, I havent figured out how to e-mail directly so I'll have to post here. I am interested in any information I can get. so yes, I'll take anything you can send me. toswells@hotmail.com Ok, so there were different models "B", "D" etc. The tops are definitely different and I will have to find dimensions for which one (B from what I can tell, and I have found some dim for it), but what about the bass bin. Where/are they all the same?
  14. Thanks 3dzapper. How does the grill fasten on the top? It looks like the area where the grill is, is recessed. Gil, I know that I wont make perfect cuts, thats why I am trying to get the dimensions as close as I can. I when through most of the last night.
  15. Thanks Michael, That plexi glass one looks pretty cool, gives you a good idea how it works. I took a quick look through the thread you mentioned, I'll look closer tomorrow. I have a little colored pamplet cc 1980. Any ideal what model that was? It's the one I have been looking at since '85 just before I bought my Heresy's.
  16. This is a blow up looking down through the top. You can see where I have up to an 8mm gap, the wings are all over the place. Well maybe not all over the place, but I sure hope that I can tighten these angles up in cad if I want to actually have any success building it. If it's off in can i can't see how I would ever cut the pieces to go together, unless by luck. I suspect that my actuall abilities will put it off by a few mm, may if they go the right way I'll be ok. lol whoops, any way to move a post should have been a reply to 3d khorn. K-Horn Layout2 (1).pdf
  17. I am building a khorn (in cad for now) from a set of plans I found here. I see why they would be so hard to physically build, especially from these plans. I have run into a couple of places that need modification, nothing too drastic though. I have to fine-tune some angles and sizes for the outer wings and inner wings through the second fold in order to make a decent seal with the outer panel. What I am having trouble with are some more or less cosmetic pieces that I hope someone can shed some light on. Not being able to see one in person, I have to rely on photos, which dont match with this set of plans. I think the bass bin /horn section is ok, but the head {I hope that you can follow my naming, I dont know their specific naming convention so I made some up} section doesnt match any of my photo, also this section sets up the last section of the horn by setting the base section a certain distance from the wall. After finishing the head section the top looks a lot better, but it is still shorter than the total depth of the base section. Also, from the photos I have, the top finishes the back in a 90 degree corner. Also, I am missing the divider dimensions between the base and head section. Thats not a big deal either; I just need a height or distance between the two section. I am assuming is will be 19mm or 26mm, but I cant tell from the photos. The last detail is in the face of the head section. My photos show the speaker grill section wrapping around the front, the one I have drawn from the plans looks more like a lascala without any grill at all. Does anyone see any other problems with this drawing, e.i. missing parts. I havent found a spot for part number 17. (500x380x13). Also, how does the grill match the base section. does the front extend 13mm or so to allow a the grill to match flush? K-Horn Layout1 (1).pdf
  18. Thank's Tom, I figured that there were schematics around for the crossover and the parts should be readily available. My big concern is picking up the drivers, but if I can, in the end, order them directly from the parts department that would make the project possible. For some reason I thought that you could only order replacement parts from them. Ebay doesnt seam to be for me, besides never knowing if what you want will come up or even if I can make the winning bid, I a little nervous about what I might get in the end. I would rather pay a little more and order it. It sounds like there are lots of spare parts in the states, they seam to be rare around here. The Belle has always been one of my favorites, not that I have ever heard them. I would be surprised if there is a pair of Belle or khorns within a 14 hour drive. I have read here that the Khorn is very difficult to build, so may I should start with the Belle. I just figure that it will be a six maybe ever a twelve month process so why not try the Khorn. Doesnt the Belle and Khorn share the same driver, just a different bass bin and crossover. In that case I could try to build the Khorn. The more the challenge the more the reward I suppose. I would love to support and buy the whole unit from them, but that will probably never happen, sort of like willing the lottery. If I did win though, I have to say that Klipschorns are on the top of my list. The crossover, are you buying yours or are you going to build that your self. If you build one, can you let me know what you used and how it turns out? Well, let us all know how the whole project turns out, which I know you will. Keep up the good work.
  19. HI Tom, Nice work. You got me thinking about starting my own project. I started "DIY" almost a year ago. I built myself a subwoofer, which works great with the Heresy, and a couple pair of speakers, one Back loaded horn and one QWT. I would love to build a Belle of a Khorn for that mater, but dismissed it because of a couple of reasons. One is it possible to get a decent set of plans. And second, is it possible to get the drivers. Thanks to formica I think the plans are taken care or, but how about the drivers. Did you find drivers for your project yet and where? I assume that the drivers were made specifically for Klispch so can you order them from them or is it possible to find something with similar specs. It sure sound like fun if I could find the equipment to put in the box. I wonder though, if it were possible to find drivers, I think I would have to go on a quest for plans the khorn.
  20. Thanks for the link Rick, I'll look around in there. And yes, I live in Canada. It just seams to be easier and for the most part quite a bit cheaper if I can fine a Canadian supplier. From what I have seen in the other products I have bought or researched, The price from a Canadian supplier seams to work out to the exchange, cheaper delivery and the cost of brokerage is gone. Hi Dean, thanks for chiming in. I remember one of the first posts that I read here was your upgrade to the crossover in a brand new pair of RF-7s. I thought that was quite daring at the time, and I guess I still do. Here I am now getting up the courage to tear into a twenty-year-old crossover. I guess thats why I considered ALs crossover, all new and if it doesnt work I could always put the old one back in. As far as listening levels, I built a pair of horns using a 3watt RS driver, which is capable of surpassing my listening level. Not to say that I would like to turn it up at some point though. I assume that normal listening is under 5 watts, certainly for critical listening. I may have gone past 10 for half a song a handful of time in the past 15 years. That said, I do find the Heresy to be bright enough as is. so if the Audience Auricap if a suitable replacement to the Music caps, Ill have to see if I can find them. Steel laminated inductor, would that be better than a 12 gauge air core? Ok Type-E, I can dump the 33uF cap. edit AURICAP 2.0 200v $9.95 AURICAP 2.0 600v $31.95 What is the difference between the 200v & 600v? Which do I need?
  21. Thanks Rick, That sounds great. I assume that there is a quality difference between the 2.0 uF Hovland and the solen Film & foil. I think I will go with you theory on the Inductors for now. I'll leave that for another day. edit Just came from Madisound, sounds like quite a hastle ordering from Canada. Brokerage fees etc. Brings me back to solen. is there a difference in quality or is it mostly preference. I can order the solen parts right from here.
  22. ALK has a number of different crossovers. one for the khorn one for the belle & lasala, and one for the cornwall I that can be used with the type E for the Heresy I with a resistor swap. What am I trying to accomplish? Perfection! LOL no, really, I find that male vocals sound like there is a filter or bloody big foam ball on the end of the microphone. any other improvements would be great. I find that most female vocals sound fine. as far as cost, if I am replacing parts, I wouldn't mind $50 to $100 per filter. I think the original is fine but could use some new parts unless someone some has experienced the ALK crossover and says it makes a world or diff. I have listened to a number of speakers locally with prices up to $1,800 $2,000 only to come home and verify my thoughts, they are no match for my Heresy. I have to say that I have only gotten the chance to listen to pair or RF-5 a couple of years ago. I was impressed, but that's closer to $2,700. So to spend 150 or 200 on the crossover seams small in comparison. However, if there is no notable difference, I would probably be disappointed. Maybe I should start saving for a pair of khorns, but until then I am going to try and improved on the clarity of my Heresy. My problem is then which parts can be replaced with what. The 2.5mH inductor with a 12 gauge wound solid copper inductor Or what about litz wire Inductor? The two two 2.0uF Capacitors can I use solen fast caps or the Hovland Music cap? And what about the 33uF on the woofer, does it need to be updated. Any information would be very much appreciated.
  23. Has anyone tried the Al Klappenberger crossover design for the Heresy? I was concidering upgrading my crossover, but I am concerned about his design changine the Heresy to 4 ohm. The cost looks to be ~ ~170CAD/cross-over plus misc. i.e. plywood, terminal board binding post, cable ties, shiping etc. Has anyone just upgraded the original design using solen fast cap etc?
  24. Is there something in the Reference Line that could go with the Heresy to make a decent HT setup, or should I stick with the heritage line.
