  1. In your opinion.... 1. Is Plasma an out dated technology? 2. If I'm going to buy a 42 or a 46 inch TV, which one is better and why? I am partial to plasmas, but need some ammo to either defeat my thinking or support it. Thank you
  2. Hello All, I hope you subscribe to the, "there is no such thing as a dumb question" theory. I want to make double/triple sure I have everything hooked up correctly I need to hook up a brand new plasma to an old yamaha receiver (no hdmi ports) and a sony blu ray. I have coax out of the wall for my cable (Directv, no cable box)). what cords do you recommend and where do they go? is there a way I can have my tv watching come through my speakers (instead of just movies)? Thank you
  3. What are your thoughts on Sammy Plasmas as opposed to Sammy LCD's? I just snuck over to Best Buy and saw 3 50" Sammy PLasmas/1080 PN50B530S2F $1099 PN50B550T2F $1099 PN50B650S1F $1239 I also saw the Sammy LCD, B640 $1319 What are your thoughts
  4. What does the Forum think about Vizio's?
  5. Thanks for the response. What are other opinions on purchasing a TV from Walmart?
  6. I am in the market for a 46" TV. I want spend around $1,000. Here is what I found: Vizio SV470M $1097 Samsung LN46B530 $1167 Sony KDL46S5100 $1088 What would you purchase and what are your thoughts? Thank you
  7. I am looking to upgrade my speakers and would like to put my speaker system up for sale, probably on my local craig's list. As you can see from my profile I have RF-3II's, RC-3II, KSW-12 and RS-3II's. All are in perfect condition with original packaging and manuals. I have lived in an apartment for the bulk of the time I owned them so they haven't been abused. What would be a fair asking price individually and for the whole show. Thank you
  8. Hello All and Merry Christmas. I have a Sony BluRay player hooked up via an HDMI cable to a Samsung plasma (model #'s below). I also have Dish network with no hd programing. When watching tv I have the volume on my tv around 20, this is plenty loud through my tv speakers. When I watch a movie through my BluRay player I have to turn the volume on my tv all the way up to around 70 just to be able to hear the talking parts. Has anyone experienced this and do you have an explanation? Is something hooked up wrong? Thank you
  9. I will bring my BluRay and plasma in the basement when I get a decent receiver. Thanks for the response, do you have a model number I should be looking at?
  10. Hello All, I am in need of a new receiver that I want to be "future proof" and last me a long time, however, I do not want to spend very much $$$ (just don't have it, would spend up to 500). I strictly use my set up for movie watching and have heard that Denon might be the way to go for my needs. Please look at my profile and suggest away. Your time and response is always appreciated.
  11. Just checked the flyers for Black Friday and noticed Sears and K-Mart are selling the Sony BDP-S350 BluRay player for 179.99. I purchased this one 2 weeks ago and thought I got a good deal at 220.00. Just thought I would pass along the knowledge, I think it's a good player.
  12. From Cnet = The bad: Recessed USB port can be difficult to access; no onboard DTS-HD Master Audio decoding; quick start option uses power even when player is off. http://reviews.cnet.com/video-players-and-recorders/sony-bdp-s350/4505-6463_7-32868775.html what do you think, are they misrepresenting the item or am I not understanding something correctly. Also, if I get a kick but receiver the 5.1/7.1 outputs from the Blu Ray player are really no use??? Am I correct in this thinking?
  13. I chose the Sony 350, I got it for 220 with free shipping from amazon. seems like it has good reviews. Let's talk about somethings that it is missing. It doesn't have the 7.1 or 5.1 audio inputs some players do. my question is what are teh benefits of these, wouldn't all speakers just come out of the receiver? Also, it doesn't have have onboard DTS. Is this a huge deal? Not many discs have DTS doe they? One last thing. I have a dillema, would I hear any benefit hooking the Blu Ray (as opposed to my Samsung DVD I would move down there) up to my system in the basement (please see profile). I know I wont see a difference on a tube tv and i would have to hook it up either through a digital coax or fiber optic because my receiver isn't HDMI compatable.
  14. I see this is done via a USB port. do i take my usb travel drive, insert it into my pc, go to sony's web site, download latest updates then plug the usb into the back of my blu ray? that's the only way that makes sense to me. is this correct??? or is there some kind of chip that has to be purchased? also once the updating device is inserted into the back of the blu ray player how is all this initiated? is there on screen menu's that pop up? thanks again for the great info.
  15. I have my mind set on either the Sony 350 or 550. can someone explain the difference with the updates? I am not familiar with them or how it works. what is being updated? Is the unit being updated so it can "read" special disc trailers/features. Please explain, thanks.
  16. I am in the market for a BlueRay player and need to know what brand and model # I should get and why. I would like to spend $300 or less, but could easily be convinced to spend up to $400 if there is a big difference in performance. As always thank you for your response.
  17. You pose a great question, I am looking forward to reading other's opinions. Do all SD-DVD players have the same audio quality?
  18. Hello All, I am close to purchasing a Yamaha DVD-S661, http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=558371&CTID=5001800 Good Choice or Bad Choice? I like to shop locally at American Tv and they have it listed for 179. I can get it from ebay and amazon for low 120's. Would you rather do business with amazon or ebay sellers? Thank you
  19. Thanks for your response. I am always looking for "a better sound" with more coming out of my rears. I am content with my sound, but I think I could do better. I have tried adjusting and that's just the way it is. I am really not familiar with amps or if my receiver has "Pre-Outs". Please explain further for me (i have been out of the game for awhile). here is the link to my receiver, if you could please check it out and if I do have "Pre-Outs" offer amp suggestions as well as what I have to do to hook it up. Thank you http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200239&CNTYP=PRODUCT&LGFL=Y

    Opinions

Please view my system profile and offer your opinions on upgrades. It's been several years since I added/changed anything and I think it's time. My system is used primarily to watch movies, it it housed in a 12x18 room in my basement. How much do you think I would need to spend to get my system up to par? I was hoping for $500 or so. Thank you for your thoughts.
  21. Hello All Is there a way to search user profiles? I am interested in viewing users who have RF-3II's and seeing what they have powering them. Thanks
  22. Hello All I have recently moved my home theater to a room in the basement. Lucky for me, along side one of the walls is a closet. This closet isn't your traditional closet, it has sheet rock and plaster covering the entire area between my "theater room" and the closet. It only has 1 hinge style door for access. I wish to run my speaker cables into this closet and then out to my rear surround speakers. My question is: can you provide me with a link/picture of a "face plate" I can use where my speaker wire goes into the closet and then back out to my rear speakers? The "face plate" would cover up the hole I drill into the closet. Thanks

  24. Hello All I am thinking about purchasing a refurbished DVD player from an authorized dealer. What are your opinions on refurbished items? Thanks

    Stores

Obviously if we had unlimited incomes we could purchase all our audio equipment at high-end specialty electronics stores. Just like a vast majority of the population I don't have the $$$, so as I shop around for my next purchases I am intrigued by the prices available at the "Big Box" stores (Best Buy, Circuit City and even Walmart). When I see these prices I always want to research the product before buying. Even though the name brand and features on these products are what I want I find that the model numbers don't jive/match with the like models in the higher end stores. Somtimes the model numbers will only be off only by 1 number, but a knob or 2 will be in a totally diferent location on the machine. My question is, are the guts (the stuff that matters) of these products the same, similar or different? Am I better off avoiding the Walmarts? Thanks for your response
