GodFather2001
Hi Im upgrading my system and curious what people would think is a better setup, 6:1 or 7:1??
boa12
gf, so far at most there be only 6.1 channels in either a matrix or discrete format tops. unless u get some kind of a 2 for 1 special, i'd start w/ just 1 rear center & see how that sounds. then go from there. depends a lot on the room & space between your side surrounds, & the speakers/equipment you're usin. ------------------ My Home Systems Page
HornEd
Boa's got the right wrap on that one, Godfather 2001. The most important speaker for 5.1 and above is the center channel... it handles more sound than all the rest put together... but is many system's weakest link. Next comes a subwoofer to handle from as low as you can go up to about 80Hz or so. That gets past the rough spot of high bass/low mids that most full-range speakers have... and keeps the low bass in the non-directional realm. Human beings, like most predators, have their concentration up front (e.g., where the food is!) and have little awareness working directly to the rear... except for that little spider sense that says "Hmm, I feel that there may be something lookin' to eat me." Consequently, one full-range speaker on the back wall just high enough to get over your sweetspot seating will usually do the 6.1 trick. For now, two speakers in back are okay for a really wide room... but I've tried it and for matrixed 6.1 it just doesn't matter. I use full-range speakers for my side-surrounds as well. WDST loses too much of discrete programming for my money... and full-range speakers facing one another seem to get the job done on the ambient stuff. Probably an area for me to renew some old experiments. 5.1 was designed for five matching speakers... add one more for 6.1... and I have. As the boa constricted, the current availability of discrete 7.1 is probably not worth waiting for... but then again... boa's are very patient predators from what National Geographic says.
