very bright S4 (almost uncomfortable)

Hi,

I have been using Image S4 for sometime (6 months). my usage is fairly regular and sometimes extended (upto 5-6 hours). my previous earphone was creative ep630. now about the issue: even after so much of usage i find the earphones really bright to my liking. i expected it to mellow down after the burn-in but looks like its not gonna budge. i have read many reviews looks like mine is one off case like this. what can i do? .

Music Source: Cowon S9.

5 band Equalizer Set-up- frequency range from low to high : 9 - 7 - 8 - 2 - 1 (the range for each frequency is -10 thru 10)

Bass Enhancer set @4 and BBE @ 3 .

If i use any preset equalizer like 'Rock' etc it sounds really bright. .

I mostly listen to Techo and Progressive Techno. I am not a bass-head. i like full spectrum sound (neutral). (the Bose in-ears sound really bland to me)

does the kind of music played has the effect on the earphones sound quality? the sound output from the earphones is almost unbearable and 'm planning to change them (rather downgrade to something neutral sounding phones). can anybody help me?

PS: I am sorry with the format. 'm not sure why it is not being displayed the way i typed it. white spaces between the lines missing :(

no replies :(

ok looks like i would have to live with it. after searching through the head-fi forum i came across the phones sound like this only :( :(.

It sounds almost shrill - sonic (dunno how to express) at higher volumes and also this seems to dominate of late - I listen to @ fairly higher volume ~30 on Cowon S9. and my music is of high bitrate mp3/flac/wmv.

If you like neutral sounding headphones, why are you boosting the bass and using equalizer settings like rock? That's counter-productive. I woud find a frequency repsonse graph for the S4 and use the equalizer to try and even out the frequency responses, or just to lower the treble if you feel its too bright. Going to cheaper headphones probably won't help, because cheap headphones are not usually accurate. I would check out some headphones that are used for monitoring if you want something neutral sounding. Are you sure you have a good fit with the S4's? You could be turning up the volume to compensate for not having a complete seal.

Even I was in the same trouble when I purchased the S4 , I was also using ep-630 like you did , Remember one thing my friend , S4 is far far far superior than ep-630 , Yes this sounds very bright if you are wearing them wrong with high volume ,

S4 produces more quantity of sound comparing to ep-630 at same volume ,

According to me you should not start music with high volume ,

you have to start with low at begining and you have to slightly increase the volume until you reach the sweetness of the music ,

Louder music is good for max 30 mins , but if you are listening to music more than hours you have listen it in low voulme to enjoy the music .

@ dkane360: thats exactly the reason why the EQ settings are like that. i have to jack up the lower freqs and tone down the higher ones to have a audible music. as you suggested i must check the freq response before setting the EQ. as per 'fit' yep i have a proper fit i feel. i have been using these for well over 5 months. ther preset 'Rock' on S9 sounds very bright.

@ bhandarkar : yep i do agree we can't compare S4s to ep630. if i listen ep630 now i feel they are inferior. but my problem is S4s are sounding just too bright - sometimers i get that piercing sound 'sibliance' (hope i got that word correct). and generally i listen to music at fairly high volume (around 70%) and i my music collectin mainly composed of techno.

will there be a problem with the kind of music that i have been playing? i feel this problem has increased recently. how i wish if the trouble fades away with the usage.

i mentioned about degrading headphones because i don't want to spend so much again on earphones till i audition a better pair.

According to me you are facing this problem because of high volume ,

I listen at 45 to 60 % on my iphone with bass boost eqaliser ,

You have to drop the volume my friend otherwise you will loose your hearing ability or power . [:^)]

These earphones sounds twice with the same volume when compared with the creatives .

Drop the volume , listen at 40% volume atleast for 30mins and see how you will feel after 30mins !

High volume ruins everything !

I Hope this helps !

@bhandarkar:

i tried it for few days.. setting volume at 20. but i could not enjoy the music at that volume. either the S9 is not loud enough or already my ears are damaged.

to check the volume level I asked my colleagues to rate the volume that I was listening to they said it is not very loud.

and while listening to Progressive Techno my fingers involuntarily reach for volume button according raising tempo of the music. 'm addicted :(
