tcaster
Hi new member here. Figured i'd start my own post on this. Besides crossover maintainence I was wondering if HIPs are better left original or do irreversable mods abound? Mine are early 80's the black commercial textured, have the metal circular inset woofer grills, slot ports, no metal corner guards etc. They're pretty much mint. Was thinking of adding speaker stand pole mounts on the bottoms. Does anyone think this mod would be foolish as far as retaining value as being in original condition? Or does the practical commonly trump collectable for these? I'm thinking both small PA for vocals and or monitors. Would a tweeter or mid comp driver upgrade be in order to get them up to date with modern equivalents or other than maybe a cap job are they usually left alone fine as is? Lastly what sub would match well if expanding? Thanks very much, Terry
Guest " "
I have a pir of HIP's that were on the market for quite a while before the seller cut me a deal. I kept telling him he was never going to get what he was asking for them in light of the butcher job he did on them to install pole mounts. Aside from the butcher job, just having things like that on Heritage speakers gives the impression that they are pushed hard .
tcaster
Thanks, that's the kind of input I needed. Besides for home stereo use with a sub they'll make great floor monitors on tilt back stands if ever needed. I got mine from a lady who bought them new for her mellow new age piano/ vocal act which never got off the ground. I think they sat in her den for 25 years with nothing but a little ocassional ocarina on cassette action. Has anyone ever tried blocking off the slot ports with something like foam pipe insulation tubes to tighten up, maybe lower the bass? Could that hurt anything at lower volumes say 80db and below? khorn51
All my hip's came with pole mounts and I use mine for live sound, so its a plus to me.. If its done right it should keep it value maybe even add as most are still used for live sound.
tcaster
Ah ha, did they come with pole mounts from the factory or were they aftermarket add ons on yours? I wonder where I could get a pair of sturdy metal pole mounts? These things are heavy as, well you know. Thanks for finding this thread I thought it was a goner. Now I have two completely differing takes on the pole mount issue. Maybe I can get a consensus if I can get a third opinion. Ya it seems to me like all smaller PAs these days use pole mounts. Any other input form the forum? Thanks folks!
