Dyna
Hi there. Like many here, my ProMedia 2.1 THX subwoofer has died after some years of faithful service. And also like many Europeans here, it's nearly impossible for me to replace it unless I shell out big for oversees package fares and get one from the states (stores/sites/outlets just don't have ProMedia 2.1's here for some reason). However, I just found a GMX-A 2.1 subwoofer somewhere. This sub comes with all the wiring necessary to hook it up to my computer, including the control pod, and it only lacks the satellites. This subwoofer looks largely the same as the 2.1 THX one, so I was wondering if I could just hook up the 2.1 THX satellites to this sub and get it to work well. That is, without it dying on me 2 months later because this combination somehow put too much strain on one component or other. Any advice on this? Thanks! P.S.: Any tips on how to acquire a new sub are welcome too!
mustang guy
Why doesn't the GMX-A 2.1 not have the satelites? A lot of people use the satelites of these setups as stand alone speakers when the sub dies. You may be buying a dead unit. If I were you, I would take my satelites over to the seller, and demo them before I spent a dime. One more thing. Although the GMX sends 14 watts to the satelites, it has a higher max output. The Promedia sends 35 watts. This tells me the satelites in the GMX are much more efficient. You will not get the volumes from the Promedia sub/satelite setup, and you will likely have to adjust the gain on the satelites. I'd guess +4 db gain or a -4 db gain on the sub.
