Forte 2's - triamped with electronic crossover & tube amps!

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm running an interesting setup - I have Forte 2's, which I have removed the passive crossover from entirely, and am now driving them with an electronic 3-way crossover at the correct crossover points.

This has the great advantage of allowing one to mix and match the different amplifiers for each driver... after first using an electronic crossover to drive subs and some Heresey 2's, I decided to try going all-out and triamplify my F2's with an assortment of vintage tube amplifiers - such as Eico, Fisher, Dynaco, etc. and use solid state amps for the bass. The crossover unit is a Pioneer SF-850 from the early 1980's which features 2 or 3 way operation, adjustable crossover points, and level controls for each range and channel.

I've read a lot of people asking about biamping these speakers, and a little about electronic crossovers, and I thought I'd let folks know about the absolutely outstanding results that can be obtained from running the F2's in this fashion, without the passive crossover.

I have also added oil based clay to the back of the horns for damping - this makes a subtle difference. Next I plan to construct new enclosures for the woofer and passive radiator and mount the horns in free space atop the enclosure, time align them physically, and generally experiment with the units to see what further results can be obtained.

The improvements so far are truly incredible - dynamics and imaging especially. Plus, you can heat your room with the tube amps.

Anyone who is interested in what I've done or will be doing, or has thoughts on tube amplifiers or these speakers, is invited to contact me!

thanks!
