marems
Hi all I'm in the process of updating caps and resistors in my cf-4's and I have ran into a delema.. Should I replace the bipolar caps in the low end sec of the crossovers with polys? Or new bipolar's???? Any benefits from polys over the bipolar caps in the low end????
boom3
Yes. A bi-polar cap is an electrolytic and they don't age gracefully. You will probably not notice an audible difference, especially if the caps are in the bass section shunting to ground (low pass filter). I replaced the 68 uF caps in my Corns with Solens just for long-term stability. No audible difference. Be aware that a film cap will be much larger than an electrolytic. In my Corns I had to used a large cushioned camp and secure the clamp with a screw through the plywood board that the crossover is built on. If your crossover is built on a printed circuit card you may have to mount the film cap off-board.
