Receiver Won't Stay On???

Recommended Posts

"My uncle has a Pioneer receiver that refuses to stay on. "

Have you tried using suspenders?

Seriously, it sounds like there may be a short circuit, hopefully in something simple like the speaker wires. Try removing one of the sets of speaker leads to see if the problem goes away. Check the binding post connections very carefully to be sure there are no stray wires touching neighboring wires or posts on both the back of the receiver and on the speakers. Did someone put a staple through a speaker wire and cause a short?

It sounds like the receiver is going into "protection" mode, which is what happens when it senses a short in the speaker wires.

What model of pioneer. If nothing else, how old is it.

Here are some other questions for you.

What has changed since it was working properly? Have we added another set of speakers to the B channnel maybe?

Did it problem happen overnight?

What does it smell like? Blown electronics have a real odor, and in unmistakable.

What can you see from looking through the top grill?

Some quick tests. Unplug all the speakers. Power it up and see if it shuts down, if it don't, connect one set of speakers then the next until the problem reappears.

The receiver in question is the Pioneer VSX-D509S.

It turns out that he was listening to music for about 1hr straight before it powered off. I removed all speaker wires and unplugged the unit....However...this did not remedy the problem. The unit didn't "smoke" to his knowledge. You can actually still hear the click made when the amp section is engaged. Now he is left wondering if it would be cheaper just to buy another one (used) as opposed to fixing it.

What do ya'll think?

well it needs to be fixed. Is it worth it?? You got me. If you want to take it to a shop, tell them what your willing to spend to fix it and go from there. Maybe they will be able to fix it for $50.00. But maybe they will just tell you to not bother and junk it.
