jonpratt
Forgive the cross post(in subs as well), but there is more traffic here. I am looking for a sub to match the following. Denon AVR2801 85 Watts (DTS not THX) KG2s (passive rads) Fronts SS1s Rear Surrounds KV3 or SC1 Center (not purchased yet) In addition, I will most likely upgrade the sub connect with a Monster connect. Do I need to go as high as the Z series? Or is the 400 fine? thanks, Jon
dougdrake
What is your budget? What is the balance between music and HT use? How big is the room? Doug
jonpratt
I would like to stay under $500.00 if possible. But I do not want to sacrifice, and get a sub that is going to "burp"..lol The room is 18x12 Mainly used for HT
dougdrake
I'd go with a 12" or 15". You can probably get a KSW-12 or a Velodyne CT-120 for under $500. Not sure if you can fit a KSW-15 under $500. Anyone else?
jonpratt
Thanks Doug. Know anything about the PSB Speakers Alpha SubSonic 5? Seems to get some good press for around 425.
dougdrake
Sorry, no input from me on the PSB.
jonpratt
Went out to circuit city to take a look at the velodyne very nice. What is a good connect for this? monster?
dougdrake
Jon - Looks like you and I are the only ones talking 'bout this... I have the Velo CT-120, BTW, and I like it. Cables? Well, that's a tough one. If you're comfortable with the cost of the Monster sub-woofer cable (and remember it comes with the necessary y-adapter), I'd get that. If you feel like experimenting, get an inexpensive cable at Radio Shack AND the Monster and compare them. I have the Monster cable on mine (it was an Open Item at Best Buy so I saved about 35%). jonpratt
lol so we are the only people who care about subs... I don't have a problem with spending a little cash for a good connect. I see monster has a 300, 400 and Z series cable. I don't want to spend the $$$ on the Z, my setup wouldn't benefit anyways. I assume I should buy the 400 because it is setup for 5.1 sound http://www.monstercable.com/press/press00_ZBass400.html I saw online for about 75.00(I will look more closely to find a better price) Or should I go with the 300 series? http://www.monstercable.com/press/press00_ZBass300.html P.S. Thanks Doug, I did order the velo CT120 $480.00 online, it was 529 at CCity
dougdrake
"lol so we are the only people who care about subs..." Au contraire - there are many people very interested in subs on this board, and they know way more than I. I'm sure you know that the cable itself isn't really set up for 5.1 sound. It's more a matter of how heavy duty the cable is and how well it carries the bass signal. Again, let your ears and your wallet be your guide. jonpratt
yes I realize they are all 5.1 sound capable...lol jandr has the 400 series for 60.00 so I will shop around and find the right price... thanks for all the assistance doug
jonpratt
Doug, I think I need some assistance in setting up the CT120...can you assist?
dougdrake
Sure...send me an email with your questions. My address is in my profile, or click on the little icon at the top of this post.
jonpratt
Never mind...thanks though I figured the switches out. I was going to ask you about the direct, and 180 - 0 switches. But I figured it all out. GREAT sub!! Thanks for your recommendation. Matches my system to a T! I went for the 400 cable, who knows if I needed it or not, but it's only money. The crash sequence in Pitch Black is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!
dougdrake
Glad you like the Velo. Mine is fine for my needs, which are mostly HT. If you don't already have one, you might want to pick up the Avia home theater disk. It has some great calibration sweeps on it that will help you balance out your sound. If you subscribe to the newsletter at www.fightdivx.com you will be notified of coupon sales at places like buy.com that can save some money on things like Avia. I got mine a few months back for $27, delivered. Have fun, and don't break any china!
jonpratt
Got the dvd already. It has benefited me in the past. I am awaiting a center - in the mail and trying to work out a raspy high note problem (driving me nutty) in the setup before I fine-tune. Have you had much experience with KG2s?
