Yossarian
Does anybody here have much experience with 5881 output tubes in a PP application? Has anybody heard of any particularly good souding examples? I've got an early 90's VTL stereo 50 that runs four 5881s. I've been running a quad of late 90's vintage Sovtek that had been installed by the previous owner weeks prior to the (1997) sale. Does anyone know what family of output tubes this comes from? is it interchangeable (with or without mods) with any other more common or highly regarded model of tube. I have rarely seen the 5881 mentioned on this, or any other, sites I lurk or post on. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Nick. Allan Songer
Sorry about that! The 5881 is in the 6L6 family, but more akin to a 6L6GB than a GC, so you can't use the usual high-end variants like the KT-66 or 350B. Another thing, the 5881 is usually thought of a a guitar amp tube. Those guys seem to love the Tung-Sols from the 1950's but I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE IN A HI-FI AMP! You might want to give these a shot just for sh!ts and giggles! Your amp won't push them very hard. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3709078029&category=38074 Or maybe these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3083374966&category=50598
