Auxillary port question

I've looked for this throughout the forums but I can't find an answer on it here or in the FAQ and manual. Can I use a 1/4"->1/8" adapter on my guitar and plug it into the auxillary port to get simple amplification? I've tried it with no results. Is there something I'm missing here, like changing settings in XP or new drivers/programs? Any help would be appreciated, because I have a SoundBlaster 5.1 Live! that has a faulty aux port (apparently all of them do). I'd hate to have these great speakers with no way to play my instrument through them.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Uh, what? I'm using a standard guitar cable with two 1/4" male inputs on the ends. One end is in my electric guitar, the other has an 1/8" adapter on it so it can fit into the auxillary port. I have no idea if it's mono or stereo...there's no labling of any sort on it.

I dont think they have direct adaptors, so i think what you will have to do is, split it into two mono's then combine it into stereo like such:

or.. maybe there is a direct solution or maybe my whole theory is completely wrong and the problem is elsewhere, I have never owned an electric instrument.

It's a stereo 1/8" input. Should I be able to just connect the guitar to the speakers and play? Or are there some settings I should adjust in my speaker settings or Windows XP sound? As it stands, I plug it in and can't hear anything at all.
