LFE High Cut

I own KSW-15 subwoofer and I am using a Sony STR-DA4ES receiver. Sony recommends an LFE high cut at 120 Hz. Suppose I choose to go with this, where would I set the low pass filter to on the subwoofer? All my speakers are set to large(4 RF-3, RC-3).

set the low pass filter as high as it will go. hopefully it's highest setting will be beyond the 120Hz that you say that sony recommends. that way, the sub's low-pass filter is essentially "removed from the equation".

i'm not familiar with this receiver, but i'm curious as to why you'd use such a high 120Hz LFE filter, yet set your speakers to large? is sony's "LFE high cut" different from and independent of the receiver's crossover setting?

Yeah i think the 120Hz is recommended to compensate for some small mains. You know the thinking, "high pass the mains at 120... and feed the bulk of the signal to the sub."

Given your mains are capable of more bass than that, it'd recommend lowering that to the typical THX value of 80Hz. Most films are designed with this in mind... and it will give you very good LFE coverage. 120Hz is high... and the sound will be directional in that range.
