Dirk Diggler
I am looking for a device to change amps to the same set of front speakers. I remember someone mentioning something from Niles. Does anyone have the name or part number for a unit like this? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
DrWho
The Niles DPS-1: http://www.nilesaudio.com/product.php?prodID=DPS-1&recordID=Source%20Switching%20Systems&categoryID=Automated%20Switching%20Systems&catcdID=10&prdcdID=FG00003 Radio shack also sells two speaker selection units (one is manual push button, the other is remote). I'm not sure about the remote version, but the manual push button only allows one of the speakers to activate at any one time (preference is given in order from A, B, C...so selecting any two buttons will only send sound to the earlier letter). To use this device as an amp switching device, you simply need to plug it in backwards (connect the amps to A and B, and then connect the speakers to the output). Since only one output would ever be selected at once, you'll never have to worry about breaking anything. I would think the same would be true for the remote version (because there would be no way to connect multple at the same time). Prices for these units are $20 and $30. Hmmm, I can only seem to find the manual 4 way switcher for $40... http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062682&cp=2032057.2032187.2032193.2032223&pg=2&parentPage=family There is also this 2-way switcher for $13, but you would have to be careful not to accidentally switch to A+B with both amps running at the same time. Another option would be to just build your own switcher yourself. It would be really easy to do as you only need a double-pull-double-throw switch (which are available at partsexpress) for about $5. The nice thing about building one yourself is you can make it custom fit your situation (like the size and aesthetics of the switch). http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=060-374 (optional rubber boot: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=060-378)
